Both Nielsen and Carlos worked with Lennon in August of 1980 during the production of Double Fantasy. According to Carlos, Lennon was so impressed with Nielsen's playing, he said he wished Rick had been his 2nd guitar during the recording of Cold Turkey. And now you know.
I was at that taping, it's where the "Sex, America, Cheap Trick" name was born for their boxset, coined by Conan O Brien. They played this all during 1995 and 1996 and jammed for very extended periods of time
This was 1995, a full year after Woke Up With A Monster..it was the bands way of saying no more bullshit, we are back....all because Lennon told Rick, he wished he could've been there when this was originally recorded, because Clapton, "Choked the riff".
Uh...no. It was Cheap Trick's way of saying they were plugging their contribution to the Lennon tribute record released in 1995. They lopped off two minutes for TV.
Even though I am older than dirt, I hail from Northern Illinois and I've been following this band since they were jamming around the bars and clubs of Rockford, DeKalb & Freeport, Illinois. Great vocals...great musicians....excellent musical arrangers. WHY are they not in the Rock HOF????? Original line up except the drummer who retired. Solid rockers with a vocalist who can still go for the notes!!! HOF....WAKE UP!!!!!
right but see Mike the thing is FOR THAT VERY REASON the rrhof is a good ole boys frat. To me this band is what the hall should be embracing!!! Guitar driven Rock AND Roll ...this IS ROCK AND ROLL in its purest form. They sound like noboby else..they have influenced many artists....great great live band....INNOVATORS. They don't take themselves too serious..I mean look at RN!!! AND BEC!! IMHO Tom is one of R & R's greatest bassists....there's a lot goin on there but you have to single him out. I had to do the same with Led Zep JPJones...had to STOP listening to Page so I could really hear another great musician....Bassist are the middle child ..very seldom recognized..ok but anyway...They are the Keepers of THE FLAME... look who they cover..FATS ELVIS BEATLES BIG STAR..In fact they are very similar to Big Star just from another part of our country. I would hope they do what the Sex Pistols did and decline the RRHOF...the establishment deservres antidisestablishmentarianism..Ya!!!
baliscotsurf I couldn't agree with you more! There are many bands in the HOF right now that can't touch this band even today. The HOF has been a "buddy club" for so long because Rolling Stone and it's found Jann Wenner, has been one of it's major influences since it's inception. How is an artist like Madonna more about rock & roil than this band?? The Beastie Boys?? Basically, no matter what B.S. the rock HOF puts out, a select few make the true decisions and until they publically open their books and truly let the fans decide, it will stay this way. Tell me how it took a band like Kiss, with sales of over 100 million albums world wide, all this time to get in when the Beastie Boys have been in longer?? It's a joke. I truly believe that if pressure for Kiss to be accepted had not been publicly pushed by shows like "That Metal Show", they still might not be in. Cheap Trick not being in the HOF is a travesty, plain and simple. Have a great Christmas and rock on!
***** Thanks for posting my friend. Always glad to meet another fan of GREAT rock music. It's hard to find a band that has been more of an influence on other bands than this one. Great musicians, a totally under-rated superb vocalist and great song writers. I've been a fan of theirs forever and I'm so impressed with the way they still sound live. Have a great one and take care.
***** I remember Red Octopus from back in the day....lol. That's going back a few years! I saw Jefferson Airplane on a PBS special a couple years ago with this female singer named Cathy Richardson and she is outrageously good! She is a blond, unlike Gracie, but her performance is so over the top excellent. She has the voice, the stage presence and some crazy eyes that are beautiful but intense. I think she is from my neck of the woods around Chicago. Don't know if you have heard them with her singing, but if you still like their sound, you check her out. And yes my friend, the music we had....it was the best. Take care.
Um, considering both Kurt Cobain and Dave Grohl have said that Cheap Trick and Robin Zander (for Kurt) were major influences for their music, I would say Nirvana was being Cheap Trick-esque. ;)
I just noticed two other "mentions" in this video..that I could watch forever!! One, at the end, when Conan comes out and shakes Robin's hand..how much TALLER Conan is from Robin...and two..is it me or does TOM LOOK ALOT LIKE GEORGE HARRISON ALL OVER FROM "HARD DAYS NIGHT?!?!" LOVE IT...LOVE IT..LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh..my..gawd. ...The month before this aired, I was at Trickfest 1, in Rosemont, illinois. I had just gotten my red hair cut..super-short..the day b-4. Watching this video again reminds me...how FRIGGIN' HAPPY I WAS TO SEE TOM WITH SHORT HAIR FOR THE FIRST TIME!!!!!!!! I guess, maybe, he liked my short hair at Trickfest sooooo much...he probably said, "MMM..maybe I outta do that too." Just a thought...................TOM...YOU WERE HOT LOOKING THEN...AND STILL ARE....BABY...........
When I was under 14 and first saw the title. I thought who's singing about cold turkey when cold bologna is the worse. Once I came to understand there was no unknowing
True, they predate those other two bands by 25 years and both Nirvana and the Pixies were influenced by CT, but the use of Quiet, Loud, Quiet was a distinct nod to their offspring.
Michael Aussie What is Rick doing? (Guffaw, grunt, guffaw) What Rick always does! Apparently, you're either very new to Cheap Trick or have had your head under a rock throughout the years
