Cold Water Shrimp Fishery - Port aux Choix, NL

Sharing his outlook about the sometimes uncertain future of the fishing industry, Chad Spence also express hope for a prosperous future and the intergenerational transfer of fish harvesting knowledge. As we ride along on the Cape Ashley, Chad shows us the gear and the work involved both on the boat and the preparation work on shore. The job certainly doesn't start when the boat leaves the dock nor does it end when it arrives.

Men who work hard and live decent lives, no compliments no matter what the problem they fix things themselves, good honest and hard working people, God bless you and your family's, stay safe and good fishing, I wish I could try some of your catch, but I live over the other side of the ocean, but maybe some day God willing I will be able to come to your beautiful country and enjoy your harvest, take care and stay safe, all the best lads from bonny Scotland.

I can't help but notice people.commenting giving grief about 'dredging' the bottom. 'Need to find a better way'.... Well... Get on it. You care so much you want to tell people to stop doing it that way then you should also be coming up with the next better way to do it. Don't criticize if you won't be part of the solution

Interesting video!! I didn't even know we had shrimp fishing in Canadian waters. I will be sure to look around the grocery store for Canadian-caught shrimp in the future. I've seen quite a few videos regarding how kinda scary the shrimp farms in Thailand & Cambodia are (filthy ditches pumped with sea water, with all kinds of crazy chemicals dumped in to kill off weeds and such that are banned everywhere else in the world), as well as the open oceans around China & Japan Vietnam, et al, are so heavily polluted that the fish coming out have high levels of various toxins. I haven't really been buying shrimp lately, because I thought all of it came from there! I hope that our grocery stores here in Alberta carry some Canada shrimp, even if it's a bit pricier, I would rather spend a bit more to support Canadians. :)

i love how you guys mention at the end of the video about "keeping the family tradition alive". Much of this family fishing in coastal communities has been deteriorated due to monopolization of larger fishing companies, selling of ITQ's, etc., so its nice to see newfoundland culture and tradition being a care.. keep wealth in these small fishing communities! commodification and capitalism is a blessing and a curse...

Anyway, like I was sayin', shrimp is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. Dey's uh, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There's pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich. That- that's about it.

MegaEpicLlama Chad informed us that the by-catch can be skate, cod, red fish and halibut. He said a lot of it is skate. While on the vessel with him most of what we saw was ocean fungus and a few skate. Hardly anything but shrimp was in the net and we didn't happen to see any fish in the catch.

Hi ***** and thanks for your question. I've found a little trick to finding Canadian shrimp in the grocery store. You'll notice that all the large size shrimp such as the ones in shrimp rings and the large sized frozen ones are mostly from other countries. Most Canadian shrimp however is small but packed with much more flavour than the big guys. If you look in the frozen section and search out specifically for the small shrimp you'll be have better luck at finding some great Canadian products. - Christine - CCPFH

Bottom dredging destroys habitat"this is proven" everywhere it has been implemented the fisheries dies a slow death... shrimp traps and cages "yes" dredging "no"in the end it will cause irreversible damage. It gas happened "every where else"... it will happen here too.... God bless these hard working good men... but so were the buffalo hunters in their day... they have to find a less damaging way to harvest these shrimp without digging up and scraping the bottom which will eventually destroy the fishery...
@mackthompson1161

@awesomejohnnet
@awesomejohnnet 9 лет назад
Mack Thompson that info is all over the science books, stats, and documented surveys... but heres one for starteres www.savethehighseas.org/theproblem/ do you actually think the seas eco system can survive the constant dredging of its bottom? Really??? Here is another report from Oxford University Press conbio.org/images/content_publications/Chapter4.pdf
@Quagigitymire
@Quagigitymire 9 лет назад
Mack Thompson Such information isn't a hidden secret. The ocean environments destroyed by dredging often times will never recuperate, specially when it's hit over and over again. This is often why the fisherman have to seek their catch further and deeper out. As the ecosystem the catch once lived in is destroyed the either die off or migrate which leads to more destruction. It's the equivalent to deforestation, but underwater so not many see it leaving the issue out of sight and out of mind.

+awesomejohnnet One thing they taught us in our college basic science class was, if you tasty or good looking or have something on you that is expensive, you are out of luck. The only way a species will not be hunted is if they have nothing that the hunter wants. Or if they are hard to catch.

Hey CCPFHCCPP, great video! I just had a question. Chad says that 80-90% of bycatch escapes through the hole. I was wondering, what is the species composition of the remaining 10-20% by-catch?
@CCPFHCCPP
@CCPFHCCPP 8 лет назад
From my experience fishing with them that day and from what I've heard, it was almost solely sea sponges. These odd looking mushy squares. The by-catch really was rare surprisingly rare - Christine

Why would a fisherman pull his net across a reef? I know - so he can either spend $25K to replace it or spend 50 hours to mend it. Trawlers avoid reefs at all costs.

@kpwlek

quick two questions: trawlers really damage bottom of the sea and really destroy life there is there anything you do to compensate that? ( I am not talking about paying more money as another weird tax ) Sec: is there a way to actually repopulate sea with shrimp, fish etc etc is any fisherman do something to have a job in the future or this is kind of "we l count on the nature" thing ? I think it would be fair if you would do something to make sure population of fish or whatever you try to catch here will be safe for future generations... well and for you as a fisherman. I am saying this only as Mediterranean Sea in example is really dried from fish in last fifteen years...
