As low temperatures storm in, we have two choices; freeze and feel miserable, or be prepared and enjoy the winter.
Did you know cold temperatures actually kill more Americans than warm temperatures? Well, today, we’re going to talk how to not only survive the cold but thrive in the cold.
1. Tread carefully: According to the CDC, approximately 1 million Americans are injured annually as a result of falling on ice and snow and about 17,000 of those injuries are fatal.
2. Be cautious about travel: Every year about 100,000 American are in a car accident involving snow, ice, or slush.
3. Carbon monoxide poisoning: Every year, about 50,000 people in the US visit the emergency room due to carbon monoxide poisoning and at least 430 die. Carbon monoxide poisoning is the most common in the winter because its produced by furnaces, heaters, some space heaters, vehicles and generators.
4. Frostbite: Around 700 people per year in the US are treated for frostbite. Frostbite is what happens when skin and tissue literally freeze.
5. Hypothermia: Hypothermia kills about 700 people each year in the US annually. What happens is your body loses heat faster than its produced and you eventually run out of stored energy.
6. Dress like an onion: My favorite advice on this one is dress like an onion, meaning lots of thin layers that insulate you from any air gaps. Overlap each layer.
7. Be Aware of Your Body’s Priorities: Your body prioritizes heat distribution. If your toes and fingers are freezing, it’s because your body is preserving heat for your internal organs so it reduces the blood flow to the extremities.
8. Avoid sweating: We all know moving is better than standing around shivering, but you don’t want to break a sweat.
9. Don’t get cold feet: Trenchfoot or immersion foot syndrome is a serious condition that results from your feet being wet for too long.
10. Alcohol is a factor in many cold illnesses: Alcohol intake is one of the most easily, preventable factors associated with hypothermia.

Slips, trips, and falls! I slipped on the ice two years ago and thought I sprained my wrist. Luckily I just sore.

Yeah, it was funny to me that when I was researching for this video, that was still the biggest cause of injury! I thought it would be car accidents.
