Actually, this was the first appearance of Coldplay under the Parlophone label... back in 1999, before The Blue Room, Parlophone made a promo CD called “Flavour Of The Label”, containing a lot of songs from different bands, the track 17 was this early version of Spies, never released before. Later that year, Coldplay released The Blue Room. Since that promo CD was only for private use, the song remained as an underground track from the pre-Parachutes era.

yes and I think they changed this to more moody version intentionally which seems logic considering meaning of lyrics :) but that version could be remastered

I am a true Coldplay fan, and I absolutely LOVE this variant! In fact, maybe this is the variant Coldplay ought to have chosen for a track on "Parachutes". As much, most of Chris Martin's lyrics in this version sound very similar to those in the final version on "Parachutes".
Actually it was after the Ode To Deodorant cassette, which was recorded in 1998. This track is from 1999, just after Coldplay signed their first contract with Parlophone. Then the label included this Spies version on a promo CD!
