Crazy Rich Asians, brought me here. I know I'm late seeing the movie, but this song, specifically her version is beautiful and I don't even understand chinese.
it's the voice of the artist and the interpretation. the original chinese version was not as haunting as this version. so it's really not the language.
Many people compare this to Katherine Ho, and honestly, she is way better. Crazy Rich Asians got so much credit for this version, but this was from 2016. Wow.
I love how they made a Chinese-American sang this version for CRA, cause you can actually hear Katherine's accented mandarin a bit, which hits closer to the film.
@@ZhongwenMovies yeah, but they didn't pursue an actual China born Chinese after the rejection. He purposely chose a student from his own alma mater. And I don't actually think the accented mandarin is in his plan, I'm saying how it's kind of more fitting to the story line. Hits closer to the message of the film.
My wife, who was born and raised in China (compared to me who grew up in NYC), thinks this version is significantly superior to the Katherine Ho version on soundtrack of Crazy Rich Asians. After listening to both many times, I have to agree with her. While I am not a professional musician or vocalist, the nuances in Li Wenqi's vocals seem significantly more complex and plainly sounds better while the Katherine Ho version is on pitch and tone but is much simpler. Li Wenqi just sounds more professional even at age 16 at the time she sang this live on the voice. Imagine how good it would be if it was studio recorded. Either way, as an Asian-American, I am happy for and blown away by both these two persons of Asian descent and their dedication to their craft.
she's so good. I don't speak the language but heard her version and knew immediately what she was singing and the emotion she portrays is better than I've ever heard😭😢😭😢
One doesn’t have to better to be better than the other. They can both be different and wonderful in their own ways and those differences that make them unique should be celebrated, not criticised. If both bring me joy to listen to, I choose not to pick one over the other. After all, they’re both covers of a song by another person, yet we don’t compare them to the original. Why? Because they’re different and that’s ok.
When Li Wen Qi first appeared on the stage of the Voice of China, she struck me with her tender voice. She had done a very good job overall during that brutal competition. Her voice and skills are really not bad for a 16 year old. Although she didn’t become famous after all this, but this cover of her singing Zheng Jun’e best rewrite song of Yellow (known as 流星 “comet” in China) was my favorite.
That's great. But please also note that this version of Zheng Jun's cover is actually Li Wenqi's own arrangement, and it was this version that was used in CRA.
QUack Quack lol yeah I know Coldplay originally wrote / sang this, but she’s the original singer of this particular Chinese cover, the one that they used in the Crazy Rich Asians movie
That's because it was really hard to understand what she was singing. I couldn't without looking at the words. Chinese is a tonal language. She did something funky to some of the word sound.
There are subtle Beijing Mandarin accentuations in her singing, which is 100% natural since she's from Beijing. That is all-nothing strange or "funky" about it.
Way better than the official CRA Katherine Ho version, despite singing live. I don't understand any Chinese but I can feel her voice emotionally resonate. The official CRA is just flat in comparison.
yeah...hope there is a substantial amount of logical reasoning behind the turning down of this opportunity. she must be kicking herself by now. and her version is 100x better - even this one that was not even a recording and a live rendition in an audition!
I know these singing competitions have pretty strict licensing and affiliation rules on their contract. So maybe she was unable to, could be a possibility.
Personally, I love the way how Katherine Ho sang this song. It sounded much stronger. Crazy Rich Asians made the right choice going for Katherine after Li Wenqi turned them down.
Agreed, the "Asians" that are represented in this movie are more of the immigrant Chinese from all over the world rather than the Chinese Asians. So imperfect English is the perfect choice. Although I didn't think her Chinese is THAT broken LOL
Katherine's version has more depth and emotion. This singer could be better if it had been recorded in a studio (which this version is not). She missed some beats.
The Chinese lyrics were written by Chinese rock singer songwriter Zheng Jun in the early 2000s I believe. He's the original that covered this convert version
Only if the lyrics were 100% translated but I know that is super hard just as the same as Dreams by the Cranberries into chinese is also not exact lol. But yes her voice is awesome.
sometimes it doesn't exactly sound good in another language, hence the need to rewrite the lyrics, to fit in the melody and language. this one was nice, it also sounds good and appropriate in the particular language that is Mandarin.
Hate how judges not just in the USA, but all over da world always press the button following up on who ever pushed the button. It is so stupid, basically they don't give no shit until this other dude hits the button. She was good tho Lol. Them judges just hatin even if they did hit it last second.
i want to know how long can a comet fly for is its beauty (literal: is or not its beauty) worth pursuing (worth looking for) the flowers of the nights (could imply petals) fall scattering behind you blessing me for a long time [making] it worth waiting therefore, my heart beats like crazy from the evening through to the dawn unable to stand (can't stand in the sense of anticipation) please let - me fall into your hands sprouting wings, turning into a rainbow of the dark sky (someone feel free to correct me) breaking free (sort of) into the breeze of the moonlight the breeze of the moonlight whoa oh etc happiness / blessing - jumping into your steam swimming to the end jumping into your stream happiness / blessing - jumping into your steam swimming to the end jumping into your stream please let - me fall into your hands sprouting wings, turning into a rainbow of the dark sky breaking free into the breeze of the moonlight i want to know how long can a comet fly for is its beauty....
@@k-original I appreciate the translation! These lyrics fit the Crazy Rich Asian movie so much better than original lyrics from yellow. Music is nice but lyrics mean everything.
ben actually I realized I was wrong. LOL. In another longer video where the MC said in Chinese that there were 3 “golden seats” left so he asked 3 judges to turn back their chairs. And then Li came onto stage. So, that has to do with the rules of this show. I guess NaYing already picked her final candidate. So her team was full. That’s why she could just sit n watch. At the end of this video, NaYing said “look! look! (How great she is). I’m anxious to death (that you guys r still not turning around)” that makes more sense. 😆😆😆
Did Chinese buy the right from Cold Play? 'Cause Chris Martin wrote this song, and I am sure he won't be happy Yellow was rewritten in Chinese without his approval.
Yu-Hsing Lee's comments were posted 1 year ago so he's referring to the girl singing here in the video or production of this show. Yes, Jon M Chu had copyright approval to use the song in CRA.
