I live in and grew up in Coldwater Michigan with these sirens. It's weird not hearing them anymore after years of hearing them. I sure do miss them even though the tone gave me goosebumps and the the chills. I wish they wouldn't have had to be replaced. I still come back to the test videos so I can hear that infamous and familiar siren tone. Rest in peace sirens. Gone but not forgotten
@@stephensnell1379 Yep. A lot of them were old and decrepit. Also had the occasional misfire during the night which was always fun. Especially when they terrified you as a kid 😂
Weird how the LCM (Local Control Module) seems a little sluggish on responding to commands, usually these old ones start up damn near immediately upon receipt of a proper command string. Still love these old Vortexes with that 465Hz-based LCM, always been my favorite in addition to their overall look with the fin (even though it's totally useless and usually negatively affects the siren). Too bad nobody will spend the money (around $3k) to upgrade drivers and amps in these old ones if the controller's still going strong. That tone frequency seems to be the most effective one they've used aside from maybe the ESC-2030's 560Hz tone package.
I live in and grew up with mainly these sirens. They have all been replaced. I miss them even though the warning tone they put out gave me goosebumps and the creeps. I still come back to these videos I can hear them again
I also didn't mention the continuous troubles we had with them. The rotation on some of them were completely broken or seized up. Some even misfired a few times. I remember one time it was late at night, my and my two older brothers were sleeping and the sirens went off during the middle of the night. Me and my brothers scrambled downstairs to figure out if there was a blow up tornado and storm. My parents who were in the living room told us it was a false alarm. Apparently the frickin old siren on Jefferson Street malfunctioned and went off and caused the others to trigger. I remember being super pissed off. Especially since they scared me. Woken up and scared for no reason. I seem to recall that happening a few times before the city got wise to it. I celebrated when they replaced that one. It was a friggin evil siren
No, that is caused by the activation tones being sent three seperate times. The same thing occurs on other dated Whelen systems, such as Oklahoma City.
It looks cool. Apparently it’s so the thing can act as a weather vane and direct the siren in tornadoes... but it seems like that would be detrimental, not a benefit
Yup and its a darn shame I miss these sirens. I grew in Coldwater with these sirens and it sure is weird not hearing them anymore after years of them. I miss them
I lived in Coldwater and remember these sirens. Yeah they had some serious pipes on them. We could easily hear them inside our house making it easy to get to cover. The new ones aren't as loud which is a mixed blessing. They don't try to blow your eardrums out, when outside, but they're now quiet enough that they are hard to hear inside (I know they're for people outside, but being able to hear them inside had some perks too)
