It's not just the fact that Ginger was beautiful, it's the fact that she was talented. A triple threat-dance, sing and act. And as far as Fred Astaire-a legend and one of a kind that can't be replaced
wow! now that was class at its finest,,, Fred, and ginger had class, style, sexiness, radiance uniqueness, such as no other act could ever have,,,,night and day,,,,
This scene is the most exquisite, perfect dance scene in all of film, set to one of the greatest songs by an American composer. I have treasured it for almost 60 years, since I first saw it as a child on TV.
Fred Astaire might be able to dance on water, but watching Ginger Rogers dance, I keep waiting for her to float away she's so graceful. If only we had some way to bring back these kinds of movies and get rid of what we have now...
These two are a little before my time but thanks to RU-vid I've been able to watch them. I don't know what it is but, when I watch these I feel a calm sweep over me. So much today seems crude and crass and the daily news is just kick in the gut after another. I know that life was tough in the 30's and I think the make believe beauty of this was one thing that helped those folks cope. Just like it does for me today.
Fred was Irvine Berlin's favourite singer because although his voice wasn't terrific he established each of these great songs as standards. His timing is immaculate.
I used to watch Fred and Ginger films on TV when I was growing up in the 50th's. They were already oldies then. My Mom and Dad, having grown up in the 30th's, loved all these movies and it was a treat to watch the Saturday night TV program that featured all of them. Mom used to love Glen Miller and used to play the same LP over and over featuring his music. This was in El Salvador, Central America.
It doesn't get any better than this. For those who are dismissive of the sound and the singing, you have to remember that in 1934 movie sound was still in its infancy. It was a wondrous thing to be able to hear anyone sing in a movie, not that Fred was that bad. Also, this was years before the advent of the electronically reorganized, over produced music that is prevalent today. The sound of Gay Divorcee is real. It is authentic. As far as the dancing goes, no one, and I mean no one, has surpassed Fred and Ginger. Superb!
This is what love is all about. Attraction, hate, distrust and everything in between. And whether it is sung too fast or not, I don't care. It simply is one of the very best dance scenes ever filmed. Every and I mean every later dancer or lady dancer can only bow to these two. They were, and still are, the very very best. I've never seen a couple that had such almost mental bond as Astaire and Rogers.
Fred and Ginger, Cyd and Gene. What a great couple of decades we had of amazing dancers. It's too bad the movie musical fell out of favor, I would watch any new movie musical made like they were in a heartbeat
It is great because Fred and Ginger are feeling the music. He applied perfectionism in every aspect of his performance with delicate refinement. That is why we love this so.
You cant beat the old ones, they live on and on and on i n now unfortunately the memories of the selected few - its cool to see including me i hasten to add lol still appreciate good music! long live Ginger and Fred!
I LOVE Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers!! When you're watching them it's hard to take your eyes off them because when you are looking at one, the other takes your eye! Seperately and together.Breathtaking.
Night and day beautiful musical .O her tiny waist. Pity they don't make musicals like these anymore. There will never be another Fred for his dancing techniques and Ginger for her elegance 🤗👠👠💫🎩👞👞💫🤗.Godbless them both AMEN
Nothing in the history of cinema compares, at least in my mind, to the grace, beauty and charm these two produced as a duo. I'll take any movie from the Golden Age of Cinema and watch it over anything made recently. God bless these two!
Kids...no, we will never see the likes of this again...and it is sad...truly...but we can still enjoy it as long as we want...it was old business when I was a kid....and it stands up. I wish they could have lived forever, Cole Porter, Fred Astaire, Ginger Rodgers...:>
Many people struggled a lot with pouerty and unemployment...at those times...in those years...just THEN it had to be wonderful for them to see acting and dancing and romance...and such a beauty Hope they had a wonderful dream-nights
I am so grateful to TCM and RU-vid for making these wonderful early films from the 1920s and 1930s available for all of us to see. These films are my favorite over anything after 1940 with the exception of the works of a small handfull of directors, such as Anthony Minghella, David O. Russell, and David Lean.
I'm beginning to noticed how great Ginger Rogers... with zero training in singing, acting and dancing. Wished I had met her...will put flowers on her grave
Don't know how many times I've seen this but the hairs on my arms still stand up and tingle when they really start dancing halfway in the clip ... . Fabulous x
I've loved their films my whole life. Ginger is Astaire's best partner bar none. She matches the total grace of his movements in a way no other partner does, not even Cyd Charisse. Also, Fred and Ginger always tell a story through their dance. It is pure poetry. I'm ordering their DVDs since none of the full films are on youtube. Thanks for posting this. One of their greatest routines,
Ms.Charisse may have been Mr. Astaire’s best partner, but on film and through the eyes of this fan I’d have to agree that he and Ms.Rogers are the epitome of grace through movement. Exquisite dancers all!
A cute little saying that misrepresents a fact--Astaire was easily the greatest dancer (brilliant dancer), and creator of dances in 20th century entertainment. And Ginger Rogers was a very good dancer, adequate singer, and fairly good comic actress, with a gorgeous figure and a liquid athletic flow to her movements.
What I like about Fred and Ginger is they never kissed. The dances were more romantic than any fake Hollywood romantic smooches. People do not realize what a great songwriter Cole Porter was, either.
This and The Continental will always be my favorite dance routines by the greatest movie dance team in history. Fred totally seduces Ginger through his dance in Night and Day (my favorite Cole Porter song ever) and The Continental was a 17-minute extravaganza. And both of Ginger's dresses were classic. How lucky was she to wear those gowns and to dance with the one and only Fred. Only in our dreams....
No one ever talks about how good Fred's singing was. It's always about how great Ginger looks and I agree Ginger was always great, but Fred Astaire singing all those great Gershwin,Cole Porter,Irving Berlin. Jerome Kerns songs that when i hear them sung by other singers including Frank Sinatra, none come close
Nonsense. Fred is praised way more than Ginger. And rightfully so. He sang and danced beautifully whereas she just danced beautifully. Why the need to fabricate nonsense like "It's always about how Ginger looks ..." when that's untrue.
@@helenaville5939 I don't think either of them sang well. They danced gloriously, Ginger was so beautiful, and they did some terrific songs, but their voices? Nah.
Must agree w/ all of you Fred was not a great Vocalist but it’s as if this song particularly was made for him. He didn’t have much range , but he had heart . . Sinatra had a good ear & range at least when he was younger,. I often thought he should have quit singing 20 or more years before he did . Fred’s dancing was really where he was most gifted
Fred didn't have the voice of a Crosby or Sinatra but he knew how to put a song over! Impeccable rhythm, respected the song, used just the right amount of emotion to make the song sound sincere and not forced. He was true to the intent of the composer and lyricist. When he sings to his partner, you believe the character is in love. I have some of his old LPs (recorded in a studio with excellent audio quality) and listening to him will lift my mood every time! By the way, Ginger, too, didn't have a great voice but knew how to put a song across, particularly the more peppy ones where she could make use of her wit. One question:: Why is the title of the video "Cole Porter's Day and Night" when the song is "Night and Day"?
@erniemanguy I remember reading once that when Fred was just starting out, one of the comments from an early audition he went to was "Can't sing, can't act. Can dance a little." Priceless! :)
Wonderfull, they are imortals :) i love them soo much and this period also, elegance, charm, education and respect always present! thanks for posting it
Magnífica y excepcional pareja de baile de Fred Astaire y Ginger Rogers. Sensacional canción. Música esplendorosa. Vamos, que lo tiene todo. Es una de mis preferidas.
He is so amazing. Everything he did it seemed like he did it for everyone else, or just for the feeling of accomplishment, not for the fame. Notice in all the pictures he's in with his partners he let's them smile at the camera while he smiles down at them. Such a gentleman!
