Coleman Fuel and White Gas

One thing I noticed while purchasing white gas to use in the stove to make smoke bombs is that is that the Coleman branded “Camp Fuel” had no mention of the generic name for what was inside it, white gas. I think that this is intentional such that consumers who know they are looking for Coleman Fuel don’t get the confirmation in-store that there is a cheaper option.
I actually made a version of this that at the end of the editing process I realized I had not actually read what was on the containers of the fuel, just assumed based on what I had convinced myself the containers said. It is mostly the same (the second version is much the same) but I did have to change the arguments somewhat (and soon after) which in someways made them better but other ways made it less strong: • White Gas

At my local Walmart in 2024, Crown and Coleman brand fuels are the same price of $14.98 for a gallon

Here in the UK I use Aspen 4 which is an excellent fuel and better value than Colemans. I always ensure my dual fuel lamps, stoves and appliances (such as generators) are stored with Aspen 4, rather than unleaded petrol (gasoline).

I have been using gasoline in my Coleman stove for over 30 years... It works great... Never had a problem.

I've read that if you wrap some copper wire around the generator tube it'll help it run better. The copper wire absorbs more heat and turns the liquid gas into vapor gas faster.

The coleman camp fuel container does say it contains naptha petroleum which is generically known as "white gas" so in Australia we can buy "shellite" which is a naptha product.

I always knew Coleman fuel had a corrosion inhibitor in it which I always thought of as a plus. I just bought a can a can of Crown white gas for about $3 less and the label say it also has a corrosion inhibitor .

I have a 1964 502 stove and it has had Coleman brand fuel in it since 64 and thanks to the rust inhibitors and super clean fuel the 502 has no rust in the tank and the original generator on it. Yes it has been clean a few times but I think Coleman gas is completely worth the extra money.

I used Amaco Hi test gas lead-free back in the day, Amaco even called it White gas because it was not colored.

We use Coleman backpacking stoves in the 1970s & 1980s, and the Dads would buy "Coleman" fuel, while the PX at the backpacking suppliers had white gas. Personally, I like to buy deodorized Kerosene, when it's on sale, because regular kerosene has an odor.

That $13 can of Coleman fuel runs $47 where I live thanks to carbon taxes. We can't even get plain "white gas".

I use crown fuel in my vintage lanterns and stoves. It burns just as clean as coleman fuel without gumming up the generator like unleaded gas eventually will.

I've read if you use unleaded gas it should be ethinal free or have the ethinal removed and they burn fine. I don't think most people think about that part.

If you think that Coleman fuel is expensive where you live try buying it in Ireland at $12 a lit. Probably why very few stockists of Coleman products here.

I recommend alkylate gasoline from you local hardware store. On the other hand, I think a spare generator after useing unleaded gasoline for a while is cheaper in total than useing white gas.

All these brands of stove fuel are simply distilled gasoline, if you take gasoline from any gas station across America and then distill it, it becomes white gas as the name implies. Regular gasoline has a 10% alcohol (ethanol) added to it and that will cause corrosion to metal parts from it's affinity to attract water and it will also deteriorate paper or most organic materials when left for a long period inside tank. If you store fuel inside tank, make sure it's only white gas because it's very stable when in that form.

I have as well. Unleaded gasoline I was told is essentially the same as white gas. The key is to store it in a totally air tight container. I have a Coleman store that sat for over 20 years with the gas in the sealed stove tank. Followed the lightning instructions and it started up and burned just fine.

Question… What’s the difference between white gas and unleaded gas besides the price per gallon?
@KestrelOwens
@KestrelOwens 2 года назад
What I have gleaned over time, not authoritative: Unleaded gas certainly will work in stoves, and white gas can be used in gas engines (but has much lower octane rating, so will damage engines over time). We used unleaded gas in our camp stoves for years (at a rate of a few weekends per year), however, it will eventually clog up the stove in a way that white gas does not (we had to replace the stoves that we used unleaded with, and now only use white gas). My understanding is that this is due to various additives put into unleaded gas.
@tonyc.4528
@tonyc.4528 2 года назад
White gas is the pure form, unleaded has additives to increase the octane level. Great for stopping pre-ignition, but with a lot of use, tends to pollute the generators in gas lanterns and stoves.

White gas holds up for many, many years, I know from personal experience it will last for 8yrs and still be fin, I’ve read in other places people have lanterns that have sat for 25yrs and the white gas is still good. Not so sure regular gas would hold up so well.
@chrisbystrak7967
@chrisbystrak7967 Год назад
As far as I understand white gas is technically regular gas that's been further refined to take out almost all of the impurities. Unleaded auto gas has detergents in it to clean out your engine as it flows thru. Those detergents work great in an engine but will after a long time clog up coleman generators. So they refine the detergents out and you end up with what we call white gas. There are videos of guys running coleman lanterns and stoves with regular pump gas for hundreds of hours before they clog up, and the generators can be "cleaned out " when they do clog up. Hope that answered your question.
