Coleman lantern project, will it run on diesel?

Got this old coleman lantern from my father. I see potential for it as providing us light and heat on the road. So, let the restoration and science project begin! Please note I am not an expert on coleman lanterns.

Glad you're enjoying the lantern. Actually the 220 series were designed to run on Coleman fuel (white gas). I'm actually surprised you can get it to run on diesel. That's funny. One telltale sign if a lantern was designed to run on kerosene would be a brass cup that encircles the generator tube. It was so the cup could be filled with alcohol and then lit, just before the alcohol burned off, the lantern could then be fired up and run on kerosene. Also most of the newer kerosene models will say Kerosene right below the Coleman sticker on the front. There is a collectors website , Old Coleman Parts, that is a wealth of information and also obsolete parts. Enjoy and have fun. Careful though, you will start off with one and the next thing you know you will have a basement full of them, believe me. Check out the Coleman 200A, my personal favorite.

More proof that Coleman lanterns are safe or this young man would have blown his face off. Lol

Diesel doesn't tend to explode as gasoline (petrol) does

I couldn't even imagine trying to use something like this without doing my homework and seeing what I'm supposed to do in the first place. That lantern was originally made to use white gas, although unleaded fuel works fine too. If you add a preheater cup then kerosene will work also, possibly diesel I'm not sure. Anything but white gas/gasoline you will probably need to clean the generator often.

Great video, I love hearing and seeing people experimenting with lanterns, just stay safe.

There are 2 different generators for these lanterns. One is designed to burn naphtha and the other is designed to burn kerosene. You should have installed a kerosene generator to run diesel because kerosene and diesel are very similar to each other. In addition to the generator you would also require a preheat cup like the one required to run a kerosene lamp. Preheat cups are available online or you can make one. There are videos to teach you how to make a preheat cup. They are very easy to make. Then your lantern will light up easily without the smoke. The preheat cups burn alcohol BTW and that's why there's no smoke.

I ve used diesel with 20% unleaded and had no problems. I ve used it bout 4 times so far. Lighting is as easy as if i had kero in it.

Yeah you need to use a pre heater cup filled with De Alcohol or some yellow Heet bought at the auto parts store. the reason it flames and smokes is you're trying to burn Liquid instead of a vapor! The pre heater basically boils the oil in the Geneartor tube forming a vapor no fire no smoke. the reason the first generator got clogged up is from all the carbon from the inefficient burn of the liquid.jim

You might have more success using a kerosene designed lantern like a 639 or 237. They use a bigger and wider generator than the gas models and would clog less and be more accustomed to sooty fuel.

I’ve simplified my off grid, camping and emergency lighting and went to kerosene/diesel cold blast lanterns like Dietz. Very few moving parts, no socks needed, and less possibilities for failure.

I have done this successfully and was a white light. Fouled the generator after 2 tanks. I’d use it as an emergency only thing. There’s things to modify. Generator is the most important to get it to burn diesel. Good luck!

. Maybe you can try Drilling the pilot pilot hole a little bit bigger

As far as the sheet extraction and exhaust issue. I wonder if you could put a stove pipe on top. And put one of those magic heaters on the pipe? For those that don't know what a Magic heater is. It's a unit you put on top of stove pipes on wood stove that blows the exhaust buy a bunch of tubes that pass air through. It's basically a way to get more heat out of your fire. So theoretically if you could get a pipe that actually fit the top of that Lantern. An individual could set up an apparatus where are you simply put the lantern in from the bottom part of a structure. Basically plantar goes under structure. And maybe put a piece of wood or brick under it raise it up to the pipe. That point it would eliminate most of the exhaust issues and the so it would be easily removed as well. Anyhow you have a good day.

Heat the bathroom up? I thought you said you were camping? My bathroom is typically it doesn't have a lot of mud on the ground under it and heavy routes replace a log over it.

you should preheat the generator first and No flare ups
@texasranger1964
@texasranger1964 3 года назад
You must use a kerosene specific generator(Ebay) and a copper preheat cup (Ebay)which slips over the generator. You fill the cup with alcohol with cleaning leaver down. You light the alcohol and wait for a few minutes for the generator to heat up to vaporize the kero. The turn on the fuel dial. I run my 201 on straight premium diesel no problems but not shitty old truck diesel. Watch how they light a Tilley lamp on YT which is the same principle. I also use Peerless mantles which have a very tight weave.

If you have a source for jet fuel, that’s a lot closer to kerosene.

Why not try alcohol? Much cleaner and easier to make in a pinch. But they run fine on unleaded gas.
