This is the best film I've seen Keira Knightley in. Dominic West is brilliant. Thoroughly enjoyed the film and far better than I thought it would be

That plot sounds somewhat similar to that Big Eyes film, about the artist controlled by her husband.

It's only one element of the film. Colette is much more than that.

Cheers Mark. Usually there's a film I wasn't going to see that your review tips me over the edge into going to. (The Florida Project was one of them!) Keira Knightley is terrific in this and I agree with others that it is probably her best performance so far. Absolutely convincing. Not quite sure why, because it's not that kind of film, but I had a bit of a tear in the eye at the end.

Keira Knightley and Dominic West are both absolutely superb in this (a definite career best for their former. )It's worth seeing for their performances alone. That said, I found the film a bit generic purely because we've gotten a few of these types of stories on film in the past couple of years (Hidden Figures and Their Finest to name two) and I felt that outside of the performances the film did not present any interesting new angle on this type of story that would make me watch it instead of the films I previously mentioned. 6.5/10

Maybe, just maybe, you are not the target audience, and that three or four films doesn’t quite recess the ‘balance’?

First comment. May as well use it to say that Mark Kermode is the greatest film critic out there. I'm sure you all agree.

Awesome film. I don't get the audience getting bored. The story was very good, I love the fact that they don't victimize Colette that much, Colette was part of the Menage A Trois too. I enjoyed the chemistry, they were a true couple of writers. Willy might not invented Claudine at all but he pushed the boundaries of Colette n' even helped her to improve her prose, so finally she became a solo artist. Not to mention the performances and production design!!!

I hadn’t heard the review until after the movie which was a gamble but I loved it. Really happy took the chance. The cast is wonderful. I rolled eyes a bit when Mark says “it’s a period movie with something modern to say” as well duh that’s why it was made and that was obvious from the trailer which does not do the film justice.

Clipped Brit accents speaking modern English in Belle Époque Paris was an obstacle I couldn't get past. That, and Knightley in yet another Victorian get-up.

All the ingredients were there for a great film. For some reason it seemed lethargic and dull. 4/10

This film does a rather abysmal job of portraying one of the most remarkable women of our times.

Why are so many 'factual' films just lies? 'The favourite' is full of them, and now this (Willy didn't force Colette to write). How can you enjoy a film that's just lies? Why don't they just tell fiction?
