Colin Baker
Colin Baker (born 8 June 1943) played the sixth incarnation of the Doctor from 1984 to 1986, beginning with the concluding scene of The Caves of Androzani and ending with The Ultimate Foe. He reprised the role for the 1993 Children in Need special, Dimensions in Time, and has also voiced the Doctor for numerous Doctor Who audio stories for Big Finish Productions. As the Doctor, he had a mass of curly fair hair and a lurid patchwork coat. He was assisted by companions Peri Brown and Melanie Bush.
Before being selected to replace Peter Davison as the Doctor, Baker was an established television actor. His most notable role was Paul Merroney in The Brothers. Baker also guest starred as "Bayban the Butcher" in an episode of Blake's 7.
Prior to being cast as the Doctor, Baker had guest starred in the programme (as Commander Maxil in the Peter Davison serial Arc of Infinity), the only Doctor actor to have done so prior to taking the role. At one point in the serial, Maxil shoots the Doctor; Baker often jokes that he got the part of the Doctor by killing the incumbent.
Baker's era was interrupted by an eighteen-month hiatus, officially because the show was moved back from the spring to the autumn schedule. He was ultimately dismissed from the part at the insistence of BBC management, who wanted to refresh the show. The Controller of BBC One at the time, Michael Grade, criticised Doctor Who, saying that the programme had become overly violent and its storylines farcical. Baker was offered the first four episodes of the next season in order to pave the way for a regeneration, which he turned down as he did not wish to miss out on other work in the meantime. He did offer to do the whole season and have the Doctor regenerate at the end, but this was refused. As of 2013, he is the only actor to play the Doctor who has been fired by the BBC.
Since leaving Doctor Who he has continued to act, mainly on the stage, where he played the Doctor again in Doctor Who: The Ultimate Adventure, replacing Jon Pertwee in the part. He returned to television as the Doctor in the 1993 charity special Dimensions in Time. He has played a Doctor-like character in the BBV Productions video series The Stranger, reprised the role of the Doctor in a series of audio plays produced by Big Finish Productions and played an alternate version of the Doctor in AUDIO: Disassembled. The audio plays are generally well-received. Fans have suggested that it was bad writing that his Doctor's era suffered from, and not a lack of ability on Baker's part. In a poll conducted by Doctor Who Magazine, fans voted Baker the "greatest" of the Doctors in the audio plays.
Post-Who television work during the 1990s included guest appearances in the BBC's medical drama Casualty and Channel 4's adaptation of A Dance to the Music of Time. He appeared as himself as the resident celebrity in 'Dictionary Corner' on the daytime quiz show Countdown, also on Channel 4. He appeared in the first episode of Jonathan Creek (1997). He also appeared in an episode of the George Lucas TV series The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, making him one of four classic series Doctors (the others being Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker and Peter Davison) to appear in an American TV series after leaving the role. In an appearance in an episode of the BBC's long-running medical drama series, Casualty, Baker played a Doctorish patient named David Vincent (named after Roy Thinnes' character in The Invaders TV series) who was a UFO nut and in an episode of Al Murray's pub sitcom, Time Gentlemen Please, made by Sky TV, he appeared as a character named Professor Baker.
In 1994, Colin Baker had the distinction of being the only Doctor to have written a Doctor Who story, penning The Age of Chaos, a graphic novel published by Marvel UK featuring the Sixth Doctor and Frobisher. He also written several short stories for Doctor Who Magazine and its Yearbooks.
Colin Baker is of no relation to Tom Baker, who played the Fourth Doctor in Doctor Who.

Can someone please make a documentary about this guy? He always gives the best interviews. Colin Baker got the short end of the stick when it comes to Doctor Who and yet he is still incredibly awesome to his fans.

I really liked Colin Baker as The Doctor, he was brilliant. Colin Baker apparently is very spontaneous, as much as the Doctor, as much as himself, is what I love in his personality

I met Colin Baker over a month ago at the Chicago Tardis convention, and he was a very decent guy. Very gentle soul. Colin Baker is the best ambassador of the Doctor Who series fans. Yes, it's true that Tom Baker is my favorite, I thought they should have given Colin Baker a better chance in his time on the show. Two years of footage is too short. They should have let Colin play four years. It was a missed opportunity on the BBC's part.

Boz Paul Suaybaguio I'm sure the BBC regrets it now, especially not giving a higher budget when Tom Baker was at the helm. Being the most iconic Doctor, you'd think the BBC would think it through. Still, the new series proves that Doctor Who can acquire a lot of audiences with a bigger budget. Though I still prefer the old stuff myself.

I described Colin Baker's sixth Doctor incarnation as spontaneous for saying what came to mind and poetic for reciting lines from numerous literature. "Trial of a Time Lord" was my favorite story with Colin.

Great guy. The fact he got sacked yet still turns up to these conventions with a smile on his face is really nice. Although, technically he shouldn't be complaining about the "pretend" regeneration into Mccoy, because he was offered the chance to go back for and do a proper final story. I understand why he didn't, but he was given the chance to.

Michael Grade, yes. He fired Colin for personal reasons. However, he has acknowledged that NuWho is good, though he himself doesn't like it.

Well technically Colin Baker never refused to come back, he did agree to do a regeneration on the condition that he be allowed to do the entire season. The BBC said they would get back to him, and they never did.

He talks about it in a mini-documentary on one of the Trial of Timelord dvds I think. I'm pretty sure the video is on youtube under 'trials and tribulations'. It's quite sad really, especially when you consider how he planned to play the role for years.

I honestly don't think colin has changed as much as everyone seems to think he has. Yes, of course, he looks older, but apart from the hair, and the extra weight, he doesn't actually look all that different, his face hasn't particularly creased up, I really would love to see him back, him and sylvester are the only ones who haven't turned up in the new series yet.

When he first came in as the Doctor, I really didn't like him, because his incarnation was initially very unlikeable. Looking back on it now, I think he was brilliant and highly underrated.

Everyone seems to be on Chris Eccleston's case about not wanting to do it. He is wrapping up the Thor movie and was busy. Not everyone remembers this, but Nimoy and Shatner tried to distance themselves from "Star Trek" in the 1970's until they agreed to do the first movie. Both of them were very indifferent to the fans at the time. I think Chris Eccleston, with time, may come back to "Doctor Who" and realize it is a milestone in his acting career that will always be mentioned, no matter how many awards he gets throughout his lifetime. Chris, you are one of my favorites because you re-ignited the flames of the Doctor with your acting. If you had been terrrible, the show would have been shelved for another 10 years. Thank you, Chris. Good luck in all of your future endeavors.

Yes. Also people need to remember that despite Tom Baker's recent participation in Doctor Who (the 50th special as well as a number of Big Finish productions), for years and years he refused to have anything to do with the show. (He wouldn't do "The Five Doctors" and wouldn't do any Big Finish until the past could years).

Maybe it's just the hair, but I can almost see Colin Baker playing a younger, portlier version of the First Doctor. If they really couldn't come up with a timey-wimey explanation of Six's aging, they could possibly recast him as young One.

darkfur3 I've always thought there was a certain resemblance between the two. In the regeneration sequence from Pertwee to Baker he almost seems to "de-age" rather than change. Obviously Baker's eyes sets him apart.

The way Eleven ages in 'The Time of the Doctor' also makes me think that each Doctor, left to his own devices, would ultimately end up looking like One again. :3 (And maybe this has happened to Mr. Baker because he never officially stopped being the Doctor. :P)

Fart jokes, I've long thought, aren't cheap. They're incredibly expensive. The problem is a lot of people will use them without properly earning them, which is essentially equivalent to stealing them. For this reason, it is very rare that I laugh at a fart joke. Because, more often than not, people assume they're cheaper than they are. The very last sentence spoken in this video was well earned. Good job, Colin. You made me laugh.

Spoiler alert for those that haven't seen Day of the Doctor yet. Don't read on if you haven't. Yeah, Collin Baker has changed, but so did Tom Baker, and he was still in the DotD. No reason why they couldn't do a little timey whimey and put him on like they did TB. Russel Davies had Peter Davison on with David Tennant in a minisode between season two and three and explained PD's age away easily. In fact, one could say that when Tom Baker regenerated, the cacoon became the fifth Doctor while the fourth Doctor was preserved and healed inside. He prepared the cacoon because he saw the future as it was going to happen and wanted to do his part to save his race from the time war. He did say the moment had been prepared for. Does that make the fifth Doctor an impostor though? I say no because he may have found a way to use the cacoon to create two seperate time streams so that the fourth Doctor could go on, but the fifth Doctor's time stream could go on like we've seen since Tom Baker's regeneration. After that, he went to work for UNIT and became the currator of the museum where he aquired the painting in preperation for his meeting with the eleventh Doctor. Just a little fan fic nonsense.

I think Colin Baker was given shoddy treatment in his time as the Doctor. First, the wardrobe ( He would've chosen something more sedate & scholarly that didn't cause retina burn ). Second, his attitude - They wrote him as pompous, arrogant, condescending.

We see hurt regenerating. It makes sense that's it is into Christopher's doctor. Face transitions and first lines are missing. Just like how this was lacking in 2-3 regeneration theorizing about 6b and now ruth inbetween troughton and Pertwee with a gift of an extra regeneration and a memory wipe

I respect Colin Baker more than Christopher Ecclestone now because Baker had a worse experience during his tenure i.e he was effectively screwed over by the BBC head team of writers in the 80s who disliked his performance and felt he (and not some of the horrible serials being written at the time) was dragging the show down and fired him. It must have taken a lot for him to warm to the show again over the years and for him to have the decency and respect for the fans to not only come back for the 50th anniversary convention but also narrate the behind the scenes featurette of the 50th anniversary episode, I take my hat off to him. As for Ecclestone, he clearly lacks the things mentioned here and obviously thinks very little of the show and all his predecessors and successors, as well as us the loyal fanbase of the show, not even taking the time to film just a ten-second post-regeneration scene for the episode. What a disgrace of an actor. Without film and television fans and to a greater extent the revived first series of Doctor Who, you wouldn't have half the career you have now... On a lighter note, happy 50th birthday Doc!! :)

You know, I kind of disagree about Eccleston not respecting the fans. Yes it's obvious he wasn't fond of filming Doctor Who, but that's his right. We've no idea what really happened during that time. The man doesn't owe anything to anyone just because he took on a job for a small period of his life. If he was rude about it then I'd agree, but he still signs pictures for fans as 'The Doctor'. If he doesn't want to come back or talk about his time on Doctor Who every time he's interviewed for a project that's completely unrelated to it anyway, it's his life and only he can decide what he wants to do. Also, your comparison is even more odd when you consider that Colin CHOSE NOT TO COME BACK for the regeneration! It took him years, as you said, to warm up to the show again, many more years than Eccleston has had so far to do the same. Give Eccleston the same amount of years that Colin had and then you can go back to that argument if he hasn't. Even then, not enough fans seem to realize that Eccleston's performance is one of the factors that warmed people to the show again. I don't think anyone owes anyone. Actors and showrunners do their job, get paid for it and we enjoy it. It's a fair transaction with no owing. When all is said and done, I think both actors deserve respect for what they did during their time in the show.

Bruno's Geek Reviews Hats off to you on this post. I went back and watched Dalek in my own preperation for the Day of the Doctor, and his performance was just mind bending. I really loved his Doctor the way I've loved Smith's and Tennant's Doctors to the point that I wished he would have done one more season. Watching that Slithen try and get away from the Doctor and him using his screwdriver to bring her back was hilarious-that smile on his face:)

Colin Baker certianly does flatulence like the nauseous windbag that he is. He also does the most appalling arrogance. Beneath the ostensibly facetious throwaway of his having not regenerated and that all the subsequent Doctors are impostors there is an underlying conviction and an attendant arrogance. All his successors and predecessors were infinitely more successful in the role than him - even several members of the supporting cast have made a greater positive contribution to the series than him, And he didn't do three years of the series' fifty - he only did two years constituting a handful of lacklustre serials and was both suspended and subsquently expelled from the part in which he was cast, on the whim of a controversial producer with whom he had ingratiated himself, and who has since been discredited as a paedophile. The Colin Baker era of Doctor Who was a disaster and to Hell with it.

Colin Baker is frequently the best thing about his stories, which I don't think are anywhere near as bad as commonly perceived. Baker gives the Sixth Doctor a fire and passionate energy that many fans love. He is a great example of how to approach the fans: he was treated awfully by the BBC, but has put it all behind him and appreciated Doctor Who and its fanbase for all that is good about them. Yes, the Colin Baker era may have had its low points (more than any other era), but he is not to blame for it, and the show has obviously since recovered.

David Nicholson Anyone who defends Colin Baker as Dr Who or indeed for any other reason, does so because they either feel sorry for him or have met him and felt flattered by him and all his fawning ingratiating charm. He actively purports the fact that he has four daughters to support, and that he lost his son through cot death, to elicit sympathy from producers and directors to get work. And he is not as clever as he tries to impress - all that verbosity - all those BIG WORDS he comes out with are just a pretence to lend him an air of studied erudition, behind which is a very one-dimensional actor who cannot be anything other than himself. And he was never a lawyer - he was an unpaid trainee solicitor's clerk - a position his father obtained for him.

I dismay. It is an insult to rate Colin Baker above Jon Pertwee or Peter Davison, dismissing them as 'throwaway Doctors'. Colin Baker WAS the doctor who was 'thrown away' - dispensed with by BBC management, and even then after being suspended for 18 months. His Doctor and his era were awful - the nadir of Doctor Who's history and legacy! It sickened me to see Colin Baker there, at the 50th anniversary aftershow, cutting into the TARDIS cake. If not for his outrageous, arrogant ego he would have put his association with Dr Who behind him like the travesty it was.

Good lord, I don't think I like Colin Baker much. Seems like he had sour grapes a bit for Sylvester McCoy's entrance as the Doctor. Not a very likable chap, I feel.

You're missing the dry wit. McCoy and Colin picked up the Pertwee/Troughton banter decades ago. They constantly tease each other publicly, but are in fact enormous friends. FIVEish Doctors is a perfect example. ;)
