The work of the Canadian born composer/musicologist Colin McPhee - such as Tabuh-tabuhan (meaning toccata) for 2 pianos & orchestra - has been greatly influenced by the music of Bali, on which island he stayed from 1931 to 1938. The atmosphere of that time is relived by the paintings of the Belgian painter Jean Adrien Le Mayeur de Merpres, who lived in Bali from 1931 to 1957 and who married a Balinese dancer. After his death she donated his paintings to the Indonesian government, which declared their house in Sanur a museum dedicated to the paintings.

As a child, My father gave me an LP of Tabuh Tabuhan. I played it many times and ultimately lost it and forgot about it. I just wondered if it might just now be on the internet. What a surprise. I haven’t heard this in nearly 60 years. It’s such a tremendous treat to hear it again! Brings back memories.

One of my first albums contained Tabuh Tabuhan. I fell in love with it. Like you, I haven’t even thought about it for decades. Listening to Julian Bream, something triggered a memory in this 80 year old brain. Searched the internet, found it and am listening for the 5th time. I still love it.

@@bobsitton1885 Yes! It’s great to see that others like me heard it many years ago. Apparently it was very popular then.

Wonderful how the piece sounds like a gamelan, using the keyboards to imitate the gongs. Completely original, free of any Ravel or Gershwin influence. The paintings, too, entirely original -- free of Gaugin, and this artist possessed superb technique. A great post!

Stunning piece and Mr. McPhee achieved what he envisioned compositionally incorporating Balinese and Western music into one dynamic piece. Having traveled to Indonesia several times I can feel the passion firsthand.

There is one thing he missed, and he even wrote this in his book, gong sounds. But, anyway, his understanding about gamelan is really really interesting for me

Interesting interpretation. In particualr, the middle movement is faster than I've heard by other groups, and yet it retains its smoky, exotic feel. Also, the third movement has moments of near-chaos that the composer would approve of.

I just did a series about minimalism on my channel, and I SO wish I had come across this amazing composer in my research. What a gem!

McPhee was not a minimalist. he was a western modernist trained within the european tradition of classical music. as many composers of his time he was looking for a way out of this tradition. when he heard gamelan music for the first time he felt in love with it. he went to Bali for almost 7 years for studying the music. from this moment on you can hear a clear stylistic change in his music BUT his approach to composition yet remains rooted in the european tradition (tabuh-tabuhan is very symphonic in its form and in the ways the musical material is treated). if you want to look into western composers who were influenced by gamelan in a much more radical way listen to music from Lou Harrison, Evan Ziporyn, Andy McGraw, Michael Tenzer or Jose Evangelista.

If you liked this, may I recommend the excellent Australian composer Betty Beath - Indonesian Diptych and Lagu Lagu Manis II - another composer much influenced by Indonesian music.

Not surprising that the Western orchestral instruments sometimes evoke a Gershwin and Ravel-esque sound (the jazz like syncopations, the pentatonic, etc.) - an affinity no doubt and not a conscious allusion on McPhee's part.
@towardthesea_
@towardthesea_ Год назад
The pentatonicism and syncopation come from Balinese gamelan music (on which this piece is based and which McPhee studied extensively while living in Bali), not really from Ravel or Gershwin. Not to be patronizing, but anyone who's even a bit familiar with that tradition would definitely recognize these aspects
