Colin McRae Rally 2004 is how I learned to drive well. I used a force feedback wheel and it taught me how to counter steer, how to "listen" to what the tires are telling you about how much grip they have, and where to look while driving (known in the racing world as "where you're going to be, not where you are")

I found out about Subarus incredible rally history when I was looking for my first car and came across a 93 impraza wagon, manual, AWD with 93k miles on it. I got it for 1400. Brought it home and was cleaning it out. My brother in law asked why I was polishing a turd. 🤣 from then on I was committed to prove him wrong and keep it running. I drove that thing like I stole it from day one. Did one autocross with it at the track and then drove from AK to WA and eventually back to AK after I graduated HS. Lowered on coilovers or lifted on forester struts it never quit being a blast to drive. I swapped parts and made it look like a version 1 WRX STI. The interior has better seats, steering wheel and a shift knob from newer subarus. Diy short shifter and welded tabs to the rear lower control arms for a wrx rear swaybar. At one point someone offered me 3k cash for it but I couldn't let it go. Now it has 190k miles with tons of parts replaced over the years all by myself including the clutch just a couple weeks ago. It has broken 3 timing belts but with the 93-95 being a non interference engine nothing bad happens and I can just put a new belt on it. It's popped a few fuses also but other than those couple times, it's never left me stranded far from home. Now my little brother drives it everywhere and he learned how to drive a manual transmission doing circles in the backyard years before he even got a license. Now it has rust and dents but I don't think it will ever leave the family. The first gen impreza is easily my favorite chassis to work on and drive. They will never sell cars that last so long because then they wouldn't need to sell anyone new ones.

Watching Colin Mcrae was unreal, if you ever saw him, his car came past you at a totally different angle and at a totally different speed than everyone else, he left us all gobsmacked. Another fun fact at Finland 92 after one of his many rolls Nicky Grist tried getting out of the car and Colin drove off before he could get out of the car, I guess he didn't accept any early leavers of the party. May he and his son rest in peace for we the fans will never forget them.

My man Colin won the Safari Rally Kenya in 1999 with a brand new focus, back in the day the Safari had 150km stages and it was more of a rally raid event (Dakar). Oh yes Colin was a true inspiration for many. He was also a very chill and friendly guy. Well many rally drivers were very friendly and would chat you up if their teams allowed it. I remember chatting with him briefly and he liked to joke, the next day he rolled that focus several times and even went the wrong way for about 150 meters after the second roll and then turned it around and rolled it again for the 3rd time in the same stage... the car somehow didn't give up the spirit on the stage. I've never asked any of those holy beasts of rallying for an autograph even though we were sharing the service park. I've had the honor of talking with him and others and for me that's enough.

Colin was so fun to watch, flat out all the time. Good tribute, and attempt at a Scottish accent 😂 I was lucky enough to have been born in Chester, so I always used to head into the city centre early morning when the Lombard / RAC rally started there. I was also at Chester racecourse to watch him win in 1995! (I was somewhere in the crowd on the video clip you showed in front of the grandstand). I was helping Marshall on the 1993 rally, on the Oulton Park stage, and briefly got to speak to Colin (and most of the drivers) at the end of the stage, as we had to get brief course/conditions notes to radio back to the start line. I don't remember much about it as I was totally starstruck, and it's a foggy recollection... My funniest memory of the rally was the start in Chester in 1992 I think, I was stood in front of what was Midland Bank, early hours, watching Jeremy Clarkson record a rally report for old old old Top Gear. He kept getting his lines wrong and was getting frustrated, smoked a whole packet of cigarettes I think, but he was funny, joking with us who were watching.

Thank you for making this video, it took me straight back to my late teens/early 20's and the love I had for rallying. My first car was a mk2 Escort, those drivers and especially McRae were the reason why I used to thrash it down the country lanes hanging it's arse out on the turns and eventually wrecked it, crashing it on a hump-back bridge though in McRae style I still drove it home. I went to many of those special stages over the years and I was there for those victory donuts in 1995. They were special times, though I quit going after 1997 when they moved it all to Wales, it was too much of a pain in the arse to drive all the way there, stand around in the cold and wet at the side of the stage and then drive home (I switched to touring cars so I ended up driving to those and standing at the side of an often cold, windy ex-airfield circuit instead...). Rallying was something else back then though with stage-side makeshift fixes after crashes and mechanical trouble, I remember teams sometimes borrowing parts from spectator's cars to get them to the service point, I hope those guys got properly compensated lol. Rallying these days is fast but it just seems so tame now.

Superb video. That X Games video of Colin was amazing to see at the time too.

I had no idea who Colin McRae was but i was at the X games when he rolled his car and it was the most amazing thing I have ever seen in a sporting event. I was able to capture some great photos too.
