RIP Coach Dye- amazing garden and collection there in the Auburn area. It is so awesome that you are taking some of those varieties and continuing his Legacy. One question that I can't seem to find a good answer- does the root stock have to match the cultivar color? Can I have a red root stock and graft a green variety or vice versa?
@ssal4699
@ssal4699 3 года назад
It doesn’t have to match from my understanding and I often see ones that don’t match in nursery’s. Common one is bihoo which is a yellow trunk maple but is always grafted to a green bark root stock

Thanks for sharing. Excellent detail. What is the fastest way to produce cultivars? Do you / is it a good idea to graft multiple cultivars to a single (big) rootstock to get them started and then air layer them off later to create independent tress?

High quality is great so i can see what was going on and you were detailed with your commentary on what you were doing. only thing is i missed a couple things you said because the music got way to loud at times. Also, what time of thew year is the best time to do grafts?
@treebear4620
@treebear4620 8 лет назад
excellent video. do you ever graft onto much older rootstock? I have a 5 or 6 year old rootstock. The trunk is 5 or 6 times thicker than the rootstocks used in this video. What technique would you use in such a scenario?

Nice video! Acer palmatum, one of my favorite trees. A few Q's - 1) You are so careful about sanitizing the root stock, why don't you sanitize the cutting blade, the secateurs or the support block? 2) Does the tape stand up to wind and rain? Do the grafts need any additional support or is the tape enough? and 3) will the tape decompose over time or will I need to remove it? These are one of the few trees I am confident working on, but never considered grafting. Thanks for sowing the seeds of inspiration!
@rayvencrowley9901
@rayvencrowley9901 5 лет назад
I do sanitize the blade! If I didn't in the video is because it was the first in the series I've gone and I was extremely nervous 😩
@rayvencrowley9901
@rayvencrowley9901 5 лет назад
Tape does stand up to water but this was done in fall as they are going dormant and put in a greenhouse so no wind or rain. In research I've done since there's a better take rate for late winter grafting or summer grafting and in summer the tape and wax will stand up!
@rayvencrowley9901

You inspired me to try grafting. My question is which cultivars did you find were more successful than others?
@addiesjapanesemaples
@addiesjapanesemaples 6 лет назад
That would depend on your understock, there are northern cultivars and southern cultivars, match them for best results. But in general I have found 'Waterfall;, 'Siryou', 'Crimson Queen' , Mirasaki Kirohime' and 'Coral Bark' to be grafting friendly regardless of understock. If you are in the west, you can start grafting now, if your on the east coast we get better results grafting in February. Great question. Addie...

I see that the maples in the background still have leaves on them, so I assume you are grafting at a time when they are not dormant which is recommended out here in wacko California. What are your thoughts on the subject?

is it possible to graft during all the year or just during a season and which one ?
@addiesjapanesemaples
@addiesjapanesemaples 6 лет назад
Yes, it is posible, however now would be the hardest. If you live on the East coast we generaly concider January and February or late winter grafts to be best. On the West coast they prefer late summer to be the best time. This is due to there cool summers and warm winters. Peace and happy gardening. Addie...

Three questions. Where do you purchase those back cutters? Where do you find the green Japanese maple seedlings? Lastly, when you make the cut on the green Japanese maple seedling and you add the scion to say the left side, have you ever experimented and taken a second scion and added it to the right side of the cut?
@addiesjapanesemaples
@addiesjapanesemaples 6 лет назад
Ebay, Heritage, yes you can do multiple grafts on the same stock. Thanks, Addie...
@drogers270
@drogers270 6 лет назад
Addies Japanese Maples what I meant to say or am asking is you've made one cut and you placed one scion in that cut but it only covers one cambium side of the cut. Have you ever placed a second scion in the same cut and match it to the other cambium side of the cut.?
@addiesjapanesemaples
@addiesjapanesemaples 6 лет назад
Yes you can, this is typicaly done on a cleft graft, however the grafter prunes off one of the grafts if they both take because it will create a symetrical fork. I would do two pocket cuts on seperate sides of the understock seperated by at least one node. A symetrical fork will cause problems as your tree matures. Excelent question. Peace and happy gardening. Addie...
@drogers270
@drogers270 6 лет назад
Thanks! It helps having an answer so you don't invest a lot of time to something in theory that seems to be a good idea only to have a stronger option that is more productive.
@addiesjapanesemaples
@addiesjapanesemaples 6 лет назад
yes but the question you askes has added to body of knowledge. if it is or is or not your intent[ for your propesed graft, potentialy it could double your take rate, even though you would have to prune off one of the grafts if both took. Because Japanese mapies have 25 to 98 percent take rates depending on what cultivar was being grafted to what understock. It seems to be a new novel approach that could provide a potetial significant competitive advantage in comercial production, Peace, Addie,,,

Look at you, turning something of beauty and peace into superficial expectation. I try to remember that there are people out there who lack the ability to grasp what's going on, but please realize that it is rude to blatantly tell someone what to do. Especially when trying to get others to conform to your preferences. This video is a true expression of human's ability to experience peace and genuine joy. I hope you noticed those qualities here as well.
