I have seven Japanese maple trees in my garden. but this is really a rhapsody of colors and species of maple. greeting from fans of Japanese gardens and maple.
This is the most beautiful, amazing small Japanese maple garden I've ever seen! You must be the envy of the neighborhood! I have only become interested in Japanese maples and live in Jacksonville Florida. They must thrive here because I see them in the nurseries. Did you do all the planning for your garden yourself? All your plants and trees look so lovely and healthy and every inch is a true work of art! Thank you for so much beauty displayed in such a small space! Why do you have so many "views" and so few subs?! I'm a new sub because your video is too beautiful to forget! kristi
Can you please video your yard again? I’d love to see what it looks like now, after 7 years. Also, how many different types of Japanese maples do you have? I am striving to have a garden like yours! I love it! Also, I’d love to know the different types you have in your yard!!
This video came as a suggestion because I just started getting into Japanese maples. Having grown up in the northeast I saw them in people’s yards all over. I moved to zone 9 and just until recently did not think I could keep them. Now I know some varieties I can keep! A part of me wishes you could tell us what each tree is but a huge part of me says not necessary because it’s about the beauty of the garden itself. What an amazing job you have done! Love the small scale rock work with a couple small bonsai JM’s!! Would love to see a video of your garden in the spring then one in the fall. Kudos to you and keep up the great work!! Truly inspirational!!!
Very beautiful garden. I love all the JM´s and fantastic you also have bonsai. I have a small zen garden and only bonsai trees. Some is of course JM´s.
i love the way you broke up the colors of the maple trees with other small and some taller plants, gardens look great. i hope that i get to plant some gardens like this in the near future
Wonderful! I wish you were closer to New England so we could come and do a GardenClip segment of your beautiful garden! Really gorgeous, you must enjoy it very much.
Outstanding there must be 30 or 40 varieties of maples there. This is just stunning!!. I just added my forth (Coonora Pygmy) to my garden and looking forward to the color it will produce. The guy that invented the 'Fire Dragon' variety is just south of me and his place where he sells his maples is a little slice of heaven much like your back yard.
Thank you! I am glad you think so. To reply to John Evans questions too: The plant that looks like euonymus is Daphne x burkwoodii 'Carol Mackie' A wonderful sweet smell in the spring. The variegated foliage is semi-evergreen in my area. Here is a picture on my flickr page of the flowers- www.flickr.com/photos/japanesemaplegarden/6147089966/in/photolist-a9nxa7-ancrFL-beoCkc-aX9DNz The white variegated Japanese maple is Acer palmatum 'Hikasayama' Here is a photo of the variegated leaves- www.flickr.com/photos/japanesemaplegarden/8040220039/
I started growing JM's from cuttings and now have 12 which survived. My Dad gave me a Sycamore Maple sapling back in 2000 which we potted up and it has grown well. By 2016 it was about 12 feet tall. This May, I pruned it down to 2 feet leaving a side branch and it has responded very well with 5 new branches and many leaves and is 4 feet tall now in a large pot. I even have it appear in some of my YT videos as it's been around for so long :)
Thank uou. I always find myself watching your videos. So I decided to try planting a japanese maple. I just bought a inaba shidare! I'm hoping it does well in my garden. Any tips?
Thank you for sharing your beautiful JMs. You sure have a wide variety of Acer Pal. and keep them in a very nice shape. I like the way you mix them together. I have a small backyard and I am thinking hard to turn it like yours. How long does it take you to get these established?. Thanks again, Steven.
I agree, your garden is beautiful. Midway through the video at 8:06 through 8:55 here appears to be both a white variegated euonymus and a white variegated maple with vary small leaves. Do you know the varieties of these plants?
What an amazing garden - truly spectacular! Can I ask what zone you're in? I live in zone 6 and during late July, early August, my Bloodgood Japanese Maple in my front yard (afternoon sun) tends to brown at the edges of the leaves and just doesn't do well at all. The frustrating thing is that you read online about this and it could either be too much water or not enough. I do tend to water it a few times a week when it gets really hot, so just not sure why this happens. Any advice? It should be noted that the smaller Bloodgood I have in my backyard does just fine, although it gets more morning sun. Wondering if you've ever had similar issues?
I recently bought a Japanese Maple to add to my collection. I love your yard really beautiful. What region do you live in? You have so many beautiful plant life. Do you have to deal with the cold or hot weather. I live in SC and our summers can make it difficult to achieve a wonderful yard.
I watch your garden when i feel stressful. Would you tell me what kind. Of stone you put around the border and side walk. Also the place you purchased these stones , thank you
They look small and sometimes pruned, i'm really curious how big they are now, would give me with my much smaller garden an idea of how many to plant etc.
Beautiful garden. Is there no sound to this video? I hear no sound and I checked everything to make sure I didn't have anything muted somewhere. What type of tree is that close to the fence with a white slender trunk?
Thank you, I'm glad you like our garden. Yes, nothing wrong with your computer, this video is muted because our neighbor was making too much noise. The tree with a slender white trunk, with the burgundy backdrop is Young's Weeping Birch.
Yes, bonsai go into our garage. Landscape pots get wrapped in burlap and oak leaves with extra surface mulch. They survived 3 weeks below 0F and a 72 hour period at -25F a few winters ago.
svttruck01 Daphne × burkwoodii 'Carol Mackie'. it is semi-evergreen in zone 5. It has small clusters of pink flowers in early spring that have a very sweet smell.
RABS We put any small pots in the garage for Winter in a large plastic container with peat in-between the pots and pine bark mulch on the surface. Large pots stay outside in the same place or a protected spot all winter. We make a burlap tube filled with oak leaves and wrap it around the pot. It is sewed closed with twine. This provides a 12" insulation around the pot that keeps the pot from breaking and keeps the roots from getting too cold. We add extra pine bark mulch to the surface of the roots as an extra measure of protection.
We prune in mid Spring, move, and sometimes replace. When we remove/replace something we give it to a friend and replace it with something more exciting or more dwarf. Some are placed strategically and far enough apart to allow them to grow out. Most everything is considered slow growing or dwarf to reduce the amount of pruning needed.
fakeusa Acer shirasawanum 'Autumn Moon'. A great selection for season long interest and Winter hardiness. The only downfall is that the yellow fall color is short lived and can easily brown out before falling. But it looks so amazing all spring and summer that you can easily forgive the fall performance. Tolerates sun very well in NE OH.
I knew your garden must have been a zone 5 or so. Maples are one of my favorites and you have made an absolutely gorgeous Maple garden I want to imitate. Thanks for sharing your talent and I'd like to keep up with your next garden videos. You really have a gift! LOVE IT!!
wow cooler zone than I had imagined. Your larger pots, do you bring them indoors or wrap them in the winter? Id love to do pots but i'm not sure I could handle lifting all of them in and out. I love your video
