Collecting Logs From Our Property For Future Timber Frame Greenhouse

At first we were a bit annoyed by all the downed trees left in piles around our property, but now we see it as a real blessing. At lot of the trees are still in great shape, and will be perfect for our timber frame greenhouse.
Sure it will be a lot of work to collect them, but we aren't scared of hard work. Besides, why buy lumber from a mill when we already bought these trees on our property?! Right?!
Our goal right now is to do things the most cost effective that we can. Which means, no fancy tools. We're using what we have.

Wind generator may be helpful in the case of son above clouds. Can get a decent one off amazon for low price

Yes yes yes! Thanks @Justaguy Doingguythings - We have been talking a lot about wind generation. Good to know you can get one on Amazon. We may just have to do that. We did another slick move with the solar panels which has REALLY helped. Film coming soon... LOL can't edit fast enough....

Enjoyed the video your hard work is showing. Getting me excited for spring when we make our way to look for land around eleven point river.

Ohhh!!! Eleven Point River is a beautiful system! You'll find some land fo sho! We wish we could have gotten land on a river or full-time stream. However, we do have a wet weather creek, and let me tell you... when it rains, that thing flows FAST with a ton of volume! Thinking about the possibility of harnessing that water power for electric power ;) Thanks for watching @Todd Reiter! We got behind on comments (there are a ton more than ever, and keeping up is becoming difficult! YIKES! But we're happy to respond to everyone like we always do!) - Brian + Erin

Have you acquired a chainsaw mill or other method to mill those logs? That one log looked thick enough to quarter for corner posts. Looks like a tired achy back. LoL.

@AllMoMoMostHome Bus - No we haven't gotten a chainsaw mill yet. When it's in the budget we probably will, but in the mean time it's been fun free handing cuts. That first freehand cut will be the tops of our saw horses. Once we have the saw horses finished we will do the freestyle cutting on top of them likely, using some kind of simple set up to hold the logs onto the horses so they don't roll. I guess if they are too big to lift though it will be an on the ground job for now. We got some big logs that we have pulled out of the forest edges.

Y'all may need to stock pile chains for the saw. Lol As far as black berries, those thing will over rule land quick! If that happens, goat is best for thinning the berry bushes out. Goats suck them down like spaghetti! Lol Also I was curious about debarking trees. Would it be easier to take chain saw and shallow stride along log and basically unzip the bark then use that other tool with the flat edge ( forgot what it is called) and peel it off. I'd think it be easier on back then ax
@BEAdventurePartners
@BEAdventurePartners 2 года назад
Yeah, we already got another chain because the one that came with the saw is a "low kickback" chain, which doesn't cut as aggressively as we like resulting in burning the logs as we cut them. Hardwood is hard on chains. After struggling to cut and burning through a ton of fuel, the new chain ripping does about 10x the work on a single tank! That debarking tool is called a draw knife. Using the chainsaw to make a slight cut will help some bark come off faster, while others it doesn't matter. It really depends on the condition of the bark on the tree as there are several ways to debark. All good points that you brought up, though! Thanks for watching @Sandy Mckee! - B+E
