Canter-walk-canter transitions are one of the best exercises to introduce the concept of collection to your horse! In order to execute a walk-canter transition properly, the horse must lower and engage the hind end muscles and lift up through the withers and that IS collection!
In this week’s video I demonstrate how I introduce the canter-walk-canter transitions on my 5 year old, Kensington! He is just learning these transitions and makes a lot of mistakes which allows me the opportunity to explain how to handle them!
Before you start these transitions, be sure that you are proficient with the canter-trot-canter transitions in both directions. The easiest way to introduce the walk-canter transition is to go from the walk- allow a few trot steps, and then ask for canter. Gradually take fewer and fewer trot steps until the horse goes directly from the walk to canter!
On the majority of horses, the walk-canter transition is easier than the canter-walk as it requires a lot of collection in the canter to get from the canter to the walk without any trot steps! For the canter-walk transitions, use a small 10 meter circle to help collect the canter and prepare the horse for the walk transition. Use several half halts on the up beat of the canter stride to prepare the horse for the transition to walk. It can also help to slightly yield the horse off of the inside leg during the downward transition to help the horse sit and stay engaged on the inside hind leg!
Hope this video is helpful! What is your biggest struggle with the canter-walk-canter transition??

I really enjoyed that you did this on a young horse. My horse is working through some of these things and it was nice to see how to handle the baby horse learning moments.

This was great. I've been practicing/drilling my horse on these and he's become a tad sore in his rear. I can totally see I was rushing him to get to perfection and it's a process. I'll definitely back down a bit. Thank you!!

Love this video. My horse has got some arthritis in his back and is weak in his rear end. His back was injected 8 days ago and I am just beginning to try to build him back again. I realize I have a long way to go to get to walk-canter-walk but I would love a video on progressive strength building for the rear end. As always, I want to say thank you for all the videos and your willingness to be open and share your knowledge. Between you and your mom, I cannot tell you how much you have helped a lot of people and their horses. Thank you!

I do working equitation and it's all about canter-walk transitions! My main struggle is: once i start the exercise my lusitano horse gets hot and keeps trying to anticipate the canter in walk if i ask for more steps, usually trying to trot instead of doing the collected walk. How would you work around this situation?
@falizianme5846
@falizianme5846 4 года назад
Just started these on the big bird before I broke my foot... but i definitely had to control the haunches on the right lead so love the idea of swinging them out a bit. I watched my trainer all summer and I noticed that she used this alot in both directions! Im finally able to ride at the walk ... still a bit to weak in the calf to do more but its a great way to find my balance again! Thanks fir the great tips! Oh and Kennisington is stunning! Can't wait to watch you ride him up the levels!🙂❤

Do you have a video about improving the balance in canter? We have difficulties with the canter on a straight line, especially when we need to go to a medium canter. My horse tends to change leads because of his imbalance

I'm going to try this I'm having a hard time getting my horse decanter but nobody else does just me which means I'm going from a western saddle to a dressage saddle and I think I'm just a little scared I need to just sit up straight and let him do his thing! 😢

Don't you think this is a matter of strength and balance? I find that when I do a lot of trot work and strengthening the topline that theses transitions get better over time. When you refer to green do you mean in a sence of new to the movement or green as still growing. I find that some horses get pushed to soon when the are not just physically ready but also mentally ready. Would love to hear your response. Thank you.
@AmeliaNewcombDressage
@AmeliaNewcombDressage 4 года назад
Yes! For sure it is a matter of strength and balance and it takes time to develop this! Kensington is green in the sense that he has not done many of these transitions in his life!

Thank you for videos. If you have the possibility for filming it, I would be very much interested by a rider vue on the neck and hindquarters while you are riding in collection. I m struggling while recognizing the right rein contact in collection, I don t catch the subtle difference between loose and good lenght of rein and my horses are "encroaching" it (Regarding my trainer I m riding mostly with small contact that I should have for third level). I would like have some visual help from better rider for knowing how he recognize the good contact during the riding. Thank you

I pull too much and twist my body when I can feel the horse struggle underneath me. Sometimes I am so close to getting it and then when it comes to sitting down into the walk, I relax my hands but also relax my core along with them, and therefore not getting all the way to the walk. It’s so hard 😭

How do I train a gaited horse that won’t slow down???? Her walk is like a fast shuffle! She refuses to walk normally. Her trot/canter transitions are great. But she will not just walk!
