What is a Collection Instance in Blender 3D?
Collections are groups of objects in Blender. Collections can be used for organization but also many other things in Blender. This video shows how to use collection instances. An instance is a copy of something in Blender. Adding a "Collection Instance" brings in a copy of an entire collection to the scene as a single object. This is much more efficient on memory and can allow for bigger scenes with less chance of crashing. Here's how collection instances work and how to add them in Blender 3D

Array modifier is not instancing. Array modifier will inflate the vertex count. Collection-Instances don't have modifiers, you can't array them. So, If you have a heavy mesh you want to array, add a plane, and array that. Make your collection-instance a child of the plane, and under 'Data' -> instancing, choose Faces

Trouble is that when you suppress something in the first collection, it does not suppress in the copies. If the first collection contains a collection and you hit the exclude from viewlayer checkbox, it does not exclude it from the instances. I'm stuck

1 - Not directly, but there may be a trick that I don't know about 2 - You can control the origin with the menu. Typically, right-click, Set origin. (Caution, it seems to affect other collection-instances)

Yes, and no. Alt+D (on another mesh, I assume) still offers you a modifiers tab. Collection-instance does not. Both of them are lightweight when it comes to resources, both of them are references
