I remember many years ago seeing a Chauffeured Rolls Royce driving up to a St. John's Ambulance Charity shop, a man got out of the back and went into the shop. Turned out he was the managing director of St. John's Ambulance! ( A completely charity run enterprise) It made me wonder where the charity money actually goes?

Golden Apple's main store was across the street from Fairfax Highschool and thats where I started on my collecting journey. That said, there are no bigger crooks in the industry. Everything dirty and under-handed they could do to turn a proffit they did. I guarantee that this donation is nothing but a tax writeoff.

Seems like a really weird place to donate the books. It takes a lot of space and money to store and care for those books over time. If they put them in the library inventory seems like they would just get stolen or ruined quickly and I'm not sure what other use the university would have for them. I remember when I was in college one of my friends worked for the college radio station. She called me one night because they had a large donation of records 99% of which ended up in a dumpster. We spent most of the night with flashlights salvaging what we could of someones donated collection.

U of Penn has a 21 billion dollar endowment. That's how much money they have sloshing around to invest. It's idiotic to donate a 500K comic collection to the school.

I agree with your point of view. I have a rather large collection of animation art that I started collecting in 1961. I have spent 55 years working in animation. I also have a good size collection of Golden Age comics. I would never donate any of what I collected to any charity or university. I especially know what happens to any thing you donate to universities or museums. Your collection sits in the dark never to be seen. I have told my daughters when I'm gone everything is there's to decide on what they want to keep or sell. If there is a way I could contact you through email I could tell you more about what I have collected and why I would never donate to a university. Keep up the good work.

SG. Thanks for the reality check and your insight. Maybe not completely applicable here but the word Spin Doctors come to mind. Maybe we are being cynical. I would like to think their intentions are noble. If I ever donate my comics I am going to donate them to you and Mother Goose. And one more thing. Who evaluated this and when? Was it pandemic values?

Golden Apple is an institution in the Los Angeles area. There are tons of celebrities who go there. Some mod level actors, and many A list. My personal favorite is Samuel Jackson. Mark Hamill has been there Alot just to name drop a few. The store is so much smaller than it used to be. Kevin Smiths store is on the other side of the country. He is a ambassador for comics and has been for over 20 years. The thought is fine. People donate and leave money to charity, schools and museums all the time.

Years ago, one of my university professors donated his youthful comic collection to the university that employed him. Lotta funny animal material, as I understand it. A couple of years go by and he wants to see how his magnificent collection has been catalogued, carefully stored, and made available to library patrons. You’ve already guessed what happened - most of his collection was nowhere to be seen, he can’t get a straight answer about what exactly happened and the upshot seems to be that his “donation” was treated as a grab-bag of free stuff by person or persons unknown. The prof became an honorary alumnus of Suxtabee U and no accountability or remuneration was forthcoming.

This would disappoint Aaron Swartz. I understand where he is coming from and I do love learning, i do believe in our institutions but i think there's problems with our institutions that should be addressed. One problem that has always bugged me was the high prices they charge for books. They make you pay for knowledge. To some extent I understand that it's inevitable because of our capitalist country but I also think these type of problems should be discussed about more frequently to help change it so that those who truly want to make a difference can have access to almost limitless knowledge. Aaron Swartz dedicated his life until the very end trying to make knowledge accessible to everyone and anyone who wanted to learn. R.I.P. Aaron Swartz. One of the best hackers.🖖🏼

It begs the question... how will University of Pennsylvania preserve his collection? I doubt the school has a comic book museum or something like that. Not like they are going to be displaying it in school's library. Do they plan to bound them into volumes? Or will they just sit in a dark dusty old musty archive room with the other old books and hopefully not get book worm issues?

Michigan State University has an extensive comic book library with books like Action Comics 1 and Amazing Fantasy 15. They are well kept, organized and preserved. Not just anyone can come in and look through these books. The books are there for serious research and study. It’s considered serious literature and an art form. I suspect Penn will do the same.

Great topic for discussion, in this gentleman's heart ❤ he no doubt thinks he's done a good thing. I don't think the $$ kickback came into it until later. You're looking at this from a young man's perspective, monetary value aside , comics is just paper,. One man's treasure is another man's trash. At his point in life what is he going to do with it ?. What are you going to do with yours ? As you grow older the memories are more important than the money. He has ( I assume ) no worries on the cash front and had wanted his collection to do some good after he's gone. In my mind he went about it the wrong way, I would parcel it up, and randomly send it to collectors anonymously with a note explaining the how's and whys. Cherish or flip..this way the small man wins. Instead of putting cash value on everything really ask yourself how much value does that particular item hold. When your dead and gone, who cares what happens to it. That being said they would have to prise asm#1 from my dead fingers Indiana Jones stylee .

Sounds fishy......They probably want to charge us a fee for their "experts" to give an extremely favorable valuation of our collections. Then we can donate them for a tax break roughly equivalent to the actual value and save us the trouble of trying to sell them in this down market.

The University has a Rare Books Library that includes a room devoted to comic books and graphic novels. The head of the Rare Books Library met with the donor in person, and helped arrange the packaging and shipping of the collection to the University. The school will make it available as a resource to students, including those taking one of the courses in myth stories and the comic book taught by the undergraduate chair of the English department.

Your take is cynical and uninformed. First, the donor is quite well off financially from his lifelong profession. Second, America's best colleges and Universities receive multi-millions of dollars from their wealthy donors. Third, the donor made his rationale completely clear: to preserve the many decades of comic books as a cultural reference, an effort that is best facilitated at a top tier academic research institution such as the University of Pennsylvania, the donor's alma mater. Finally, the donor is but one of thousands of college graduates with degrees in business that had successful and lucrative careers, and owe debts of gratitude to the colleges that started them on their career paths.
