hey! UCSB alumni here. regarding making friends, honestly, you're not the only one. personally, i found the true people i wanna hang out and are now my ultimate best friends like not til end of second year. BUT, i will tell you what i regret doing. basically, just be a yes man. or woman i guess in this case. your RAs will hold events, say yes to those. I went camping during my freshman year and had a blast and met people that way. also it's not uncommon to walk around your floor (or if anyone's door is open) and just ask if they wanna eat with you, or going to the dining commons and asking someone to sit with them. it's hard to definitely step out of your comfort zone, but EVERYONE feels that way. clubs will also start flyering all over the arbor and you can figure out which clubs youre interested in. or greek life if youre into that. there's even a club called excursion club and they have all sorts of water equipment free to members like kayaks, wetsuits, surfboards, paddleboards, etc. when class starts, it's also easy to just sit next to someone and exchange numbers to study together, etc. don't worry! your journey as a gaucho is just starting. i just graduated last spring, and i was incredibly heartbroken about leaving isla vista, but i am also excited and super happy that a new set of amazing people will be taking the spaces that we have left behind in that little piece of paradise. if you need anything at all, tips, questions about classes (hit me up about film! i worked in the only movie theater on campus - great job with great perks), just message me and i'll gladly give you all the advice i can conjure from 4 years of amazing SB experience.
