I believe Students should be free to choose their courses and build their own curriculum. We all know what we want from college. There is simply NO program that matches our expectations. College forces us into a path dictated by a curriculum that is constantly being remodeled to meet their business expectations. These guys should really look at job postings out there and amend their curricula based on the requirements.
@handballroller
@handballroller 9 лет назад
It does not have to be complicated. All they need to do is study a sample of job ads per field and redefine their courses however they will never do this for 2 reasons 1. America is too liberal 2. Most of the people in charge of education are in their 60s. If we had more young blood at the top things would change, but for now I will just sit back and keep posting these videos for everyone's enjoyment!!! Thanks for watching!!

@eugene680

handballroller Let me continue. As you mentioned, most people attend post secondary to find themselves. My opinion is they only end up choosing careers which are in high demand which they absolutely hate. They only saw three things when choosing the career: six-figure salary, high employment rate and job security. Passion was never one of them.
@handballroller
@handballroller 9 лет назад
Have you been stalking me for the past 5 years?? HAHA just kidding, you are absolutely right. I am not regretting the career path I chose I just think that students as a whole are extremely misinformed. Even these "high demand, high paying" fields arent as high demanding and paying as the universities make them out to be. I heard a mother telling her son on the bus last week, "just go to college and study what makes you happy". This is fine until their loan payments start to come due. In life there is a tradeoff between passion and practicality, I just advocate full disclosure and at minimum satisfactory preparation when you pay thousands for a service.

Good video. So true. Although college is not necessarily a scam, it is not for everyone. Unfortunately, people are being pressured into going to college, even if they do not have a clear plan of what they want to do. College is only for people who KNOW what they want to do AND the job they want requires the degree. For example: Registered Nurse, Occupational Therapist, Engineer, etc. Otherwise, you are better off learning a trade and maybe getting a degree AFTER you have made a lot of money in your trade.
@sasasavage5047
@sasasavage5047 8 лет назад
I agree. Although, it is still slightly a scam for people who actually should be there as well. There is no need for us to take general ed classes and waste that money in tuition. I would say the price is a scam as well but unfortunately that's just basic economics. Demand is high because of the easy access to loans so the price raises.

As a college graduate who has a Bachelor's degree, I couldn't agree more! College is not fully preparing students for the real world. Finding a job today after graduating college is not the same as it was during the 70s, 80s, and 90s. It's all politics now. It's who you know/who knows you and your work experience. As you also stated in your video, you go on a company's website to look at their qualifications of employment and it says, "Bachelor's degree in _____________" and "3-5+ years of experience." It makes me laugh because it says "Entry Level Position." Uh...Earth to employers, it is NOT ENTRY LEVEL POSITION if you're asking for 3-5+ years of experience! It blows my mind away, because by their logic in order to get experience you obviously need a job, but in order to get these jobs you need to have a college degree. So how the hell do they expect us to get experience when we need to have a college degree. College today is an overpriced scam. A Bachelor's degree today is the new high school diploma and it's sad.

Read the book "Academically Adrift." It proves what the OP is saying. Two professors followed over 2300 students over a period of several years. Periodically, the subjects were tested to gauge how their critical thinking, writing and capacity to calculate were improving. After two years, over 40% of college students had shown no improvement. Four years later, over 30% were no better at those skills than when they started. And the improvement that was manifested was marginal at best. What the authors found out was that college was nothing but one big party, neither the institution nor students had any real expectations of doing difficult scholarship. Instead, it is a way to drain money from extremely ignorant and naive teenagers and their equally gullible parents.....

This guy gives good advice. College is not something to be totally avoided but it should only be considered when you really know what you want to do. There is a tremendous monetary (not to mention opportunity) cost from going to college/university. Such institutions are not going to care what you get out of your program, they only care to make money off the educational service they provide. Bottom line: Only go to college if you know it is required for what you want to do, that's it.

My biggest complaint with college is, like you said, I feel like nothing I'm learning is practical for my prospective career. I want to be an optometrist so the path I'm taking at my school is called "pre-optometry" but honestly nothing I've learned directly relates to working in that field. Sure, I have classes like biology, gen chem, o chem, etc. but none of it directly relates to optometry (at least what parts of it they teach us). I've learned more about the field volunteering at clinics and shadowing optometrists. And to top it all off I'm paying thousands of dollars to take all these irrelevant classes. It's not going to be until optometry school that I'll be learning anything practical and hands-on. I'm basically just paying to have some official sign off on my diploma at the end once I've already put in all the time, effort, and money. I think the post-secondary education system in the U.S. needs a massive overhaul

Thank you thank you thank you. Like you, I was told to go to college right after high school and I agreed to as 1, I enjoy learning and 2, I wanted to escape my (toxic) family and was not able to think of any other way. I went in with an “Undeclared Major” as that was “suggested of me”. I had not made a direct decision of what I was going to do after college. The first two years was, for me, good because I wanted a variety of subjects to see which class(es) stand out for a degree. After completing ~2 years, I chose “Social Sciences” as I really enjoyed my Sociology and Psychology classes. However, though this was the case, I was to sign up for classes that I wasn’t interested in like Science and Math. Also, I agree, the pre- requisites were just a lower level as the main upper level course(s). I was in so much pressure to go to school to get a degree that I eventually, after dropping out, due to certain circumstances, was told (made to believe it was my idea) to finish my schooling online during COVID. There were some hands on stuff on campus like a day-care for Child Development majors, however, there was not any hands on with 2 areas of my major just learning facts about the subject. If I were to go back in time, I will have said “I’m not ready and need some time to explore different fields for what to do after graduation”, but I didn’t because I had the fear of being “shunned” (controlling environment to accomplish my ma’s dreams of a degree). I was thinking of going to grad school, but am in so much debt for taking ALL the money offered in desperation of being able to reside/learn far from the family. I am currently homeless in a sober living (that is of little help) and struggling with finances. I have a hard time working and wish I were able to think for myself without fear of abandonment. Anyway, I’m just going to go through each day hoping things workout for me. I’m breaking free from the family as I’m experiencing what it is like to be “independent”. Thanks again for the video…

(and the FB page) My son was able to do college and high school together with NO student debt (a total of only about $3,000) from an accredited long distance college. Never had to step foot on a campus, NO debt, no wasted time! It works for adults wanting to get their degree, high school students who want to earn a few credits to transfer in to their choice school or the way my son did it! For sure, college is a HUGE business- don't let your kids start off life in debt or without the needed skills!

This sounds about right..in 2009 I attended the art institute of Austin.. I took their "Media Arts" program from 09 to 2013 I learned bits and pieces of 8 different trades in the "art industry". At the end "senior year" they tried to make sense of it "the instructors" all of a sudden said you'll are video game character artist and your portfolio must be of this. We had like 3 months worth of zbrush and 3ds max plus other things training...ok up until this point I felt like a film student or a graphic design based on the classes. So I graduated and realized I would have to freelance or move to California for a job all of the ones in Austin wanted you to have 5+ years experience in studio. So I came home delusional and blamed myself for not being good enough for 5 years I practiced my skill. I finally broke out of this global elite trans that I must be poor cause I faild and just got a job doing something unrelated.

Should've just bought a milled or even a fake degree+ transcripts online. Most HR firms tend to completely focus on credit and criminal background checks. You could pass it off as legit. Unless it requires high security clearance.

For those who dropped out of college and continued without it, how are you doing and what would you suggest to a soon-to-be college dropout? I want to start a farmstead and work as a landscaper and small-scale farmer and decided that a college degree is not worth my time, effort or money. I am an incredibly hard-working young man and incredibly ambitious, for details' sake. I would very much appreciate some words on the subject. I've got an idea of what I want to do, but I'd like some input from others.

Truth be told. I would say Certs should be top priority half the cost worth a whole lot more. As long as the asslords that run the company will accept those.

Yeah. Even getting an AA requires you to complete a raft of what they call "general education" classes in addition to your major classes and support classes. AA required all three groups of classes, but I later discovered that my JC offered "certificates" in the same major. If you completed only the major classes in, say, drafting, you got what they call a certificate of completion. If you also manage to complete the support courses you got the next level up, called a certificate of proficiency. Finally, if you completed the rest (general ed classes), you got the AA. Had I to do it all over again, i'd have gotten the lowest certificate or two and then gotten myself an entry-level drafting job. Since most support and GE were also offered at night, I'd take them later AFTER I started working. Then, after working for a while, decide if I should get a BS or not, at which time the company might even pay for much of the cost. Oh well.

Took 7 years for me to finish college, only work I ever could find didn’t even require a college degree. Later I started an auto detailing business. I do that full time now. I make far more money than I ever did in the field I went to college for. Sometimes I wonder where I would be if I had just skipped college and learned about detailing when I was 19 or 20.

I study bio-information technologies, studied the basics of systems analysis and learned to use a pivot table on the first course, along with using mathematica and matlab for optimization problems.... What the hell do you study in America? Over here, you have to know your major BEFORE you apply for uni and you start your major courses in first period.

Some of the core educational basics will be important to you when you get older. Education is a life long endeavor. Ya have no knowledge son...part of the hassle is the requirement...makes you finish the course , which is what it takes in the business world. Why didn't you master the subject matter so it was ez. College is for learning and building a solid educational foundation. In depth, intense reading of important books, writing to develop your rational thought in a coherent manner, studying history, mathematics, learning about money/economics/small business operations, ect. I graduated in the early 80's with a University economics degree with no job prospects, no offers. I "figured" I'd go to law school somehow and got a job at a law firm in corporate investigations..ie gofer boy). I was surrounded by young attorneys working their asses off to maintain their job, working 10 hr days, Sat too! I got that job because I had a good education and could write a concise, informative brief as requested. After deciding...screw that, I ended up getting my real estate license...starting learning about real estate, construction, selling properties and eventually bought several of my own. It all was part of a learning process, lots of failures..at times...but I kept at it and became successful and retired at 60.Read more Show less

Luckily I was able to get Imo a worthless associates degree with a Pell grant instead of having to have pay it out of my money the op of this video is correct they make you take a bunch of stupid classes that nothing to do what your major had to end up getting a liberal arts major because I kept fell in the math sections which were the most basic classes because the amount of time even the op of this video is correct you had k through 12 to be well-rounded I even know a relative that got a degree in animation and this person is working a job that has nothing to do with their degree
@rickylouis1453

Also looking back on the entire time I was in junior college the op of this video is correct most of the textbooks regardless of additions or new even the math textbooks were the same Imo there's literally no difference between the different Editions of the same textbook even though I did notice in a bio class that there was slightly more text than newer version a lot of times I actually did pirate textbook so it couldn't have came up out of my Pell grant money

What is also great if you have a professor who doesn't give a single fuck about his students. I had a professor in technical mechanic in engineering. He just went to class to show off, how intelligent he is. He gave us his script with tasks and solutions. Every solution had a mistake we as students made a list with wrong solutions. When it came to the finals, he took extra tricky and hard task, that have not been abled to be solved in the given time. He didn't even give us enough sheets of paper to make the calculus. Afterward he is always blaming the students for his failliure rate of 80-90% each semester. If the professor wants you to fail, he will let you fail. There are no control mechanism for this. That's why it is a fraud in Germany.
