This is so sad. In my country (Bulgaria) we had to know all the countries in the world, show them on the map and recognize their flag by 7th grade. The problem is many in this generation (my own) will consider themselves educated and their beliefs absolute but will be lacking the same basic knowledge these people do. It would take anyone less than a day of studying a map on the internet to be able to point out the majority of the countries in the world. Seems my generation prefers the idea of education over actually seeking it out.

This is what happens when we dumb down expectations as parents and teachers. Raise the bar on the kids and expect better and they will reach and exceed. This lack of basic knowledge is so depressing. I find time to teach this to my 6th graders, I think it's just ignored in favor of math and science in secondary schools.

Many years ago, my wife came back from visiting her family in China. Someone at her office asked her a question and she accidentally responded in Chinese out of reflex. She apologized but her coworker looked dumbfounded and said she thought they spoke English in China. geht mir genauso. ich kann alle länder benennen und weiß, dass das nicht viele können aber in deutschland bekommt jeder zumindest 30,40,50 länder hin, weil man noch aus der grundschule ein paar in europa kennt, weil man es aus den nachrichten über einflussreiche länder kennt, es weiß zb jeder, wo usa, kanada, brasilien, china, russland und japan liegen…

They have never experienced as children or as young adults, any kind of kickstart of pride, curiosity, just a hunger to know about anything that does not fit into their incredibly narrowed-down scope of interest. (Too often incessantly and obsessively self-focused.) How many of these young women could inform you for a solid half hour without barely stopping for breath, on 978 different bits of info on any Kardashian, take your pick? Geography(Geo) is not taught in Jamaica until the 9th grade (earliest, sometimes 10th). However, we are taught Social Studies. Social Studies encompasses history, geo, civics, general knowledge and government. We learn: 1. Types of communities: local, national, regional, global 2. Solar System 3. Location: Longitude and latitude 4. Soil and rock types: Loam, clay, sand, igneous, metamorphic, etc. 5. Different countries: size, flags, population, major cities, etc. and it goes on and on. The Jamaican system is well-rounded. Now that young man who said he was Jamaican should have stated that he was Jamaican by descent and American by nationality.

Parents, put a map of the world up on the wall and refer to it with the kids. Start them early. Show them on the map where you travelled, or talk about historical events and where they were/are. Do lots of quizzes. Kids love to be quizzed. The capital city of Australia is…? In a few years they will know a lot of basic geography. Make it fun!
