Man, I remember that like it was yesterday. I will never forget that moment of Johnston jumping around for as long as I live. That's what makes the sport so special. To hear the announcers start off joking around that Johnston beating Becker would be a great showing for his season all the way to the pin and the place just being electrified. Awesome.
I wrestled DI in the 90's. The sport has advanced quite a bit since I was in school! The internet has helped to evolve wrestling a ton. I wouldn't be able to hang with these kids today. It's pretty impressive.
This is has got to be one of the best duals of all-time. With this pin and Fulsaas beating 2x champ Damion Hahn with about :05 seconds left. And Iowa was without the services of Mocco but after Fulsaas's win Iowa had a 7 point lead going into HWT and I believe Iowa threw out Freshman Paul Bradley, a little before he hit the starting lineup.
There was a poster in my Gym that said "People like to make fun of guys who wrestle, but they're smart enuff to not tell these jokes in front of them" haha
Before joining wrestling, I was a walking stick. I was nothing but skin and bones. After joining wrestling, I am now growing a strong six pack, I can do up to 60 push ups (I know still weak, but better than doing only 15), and best of all, I can move my pecs without touching them! :) Wrestling's the best sport out there!
@Italiangangst3r I know right?! I referee high school wrestling now to keep with the sport, but when i see the kids out there, makes me want to get my singlet and headgear on and go out and join them =D
Does anyone find the timing of the ref's whistle for the pin a bit late? Becker was pinned but the ref blew the whistle at a point when the guy's one shoulder was up. Is that normal for college?
The official doesn't need to blow the whistle at the moment the pin occurs. Not written to the rulebook. When I officiated, I would see the pin and turn my head away; then blow my whistle and slap the mat. That way the coaches and fans didn't argue the pin.
@omghaxzorzz Im a freshamn in highschool, my first year of wrestling, and im doing it all for football.. wow.. small world.. i lost my first match but i went 2-2 at my first tournament, i hope you better luck
@omghaxzorzz Way to go and dont ever quit! Conditioning and doing moves correctly makes all the difference. increase your opponents pain and that will decrease his will to win! Make him want to get off the matt! FYI:! Im a VHSL 3X State Champion. Andy Bello
Iowa is an awesome school. I wrestled for AUU AND High School. I just got accepted to Iowa. I go to talk to the Coach next thurday about wrestling next season. Gonna be an awesome time
This is the match that lost Matt Anderson the starting spot at 157 lbs for Iowa. Which I still think to this day was a mistake. All of the eggs were put into this one match. Can elaborate more if need to.
@@wrestlermike22 - Anderson and Johnston had gone back and forth in the starting position. That season Anderson had wins over both Gray Maynard of Michigan State and Shane Roller of Oklahoma State. Iowa was unsure whether they were going to put Anderson or Johnston at 157 lb, come the Big ten Tournament. This was the match where they decided to go with Johnston.
@@TheNotbadphonedaddy seeing as how he was ranked 8 and just pinned the returning national champion, it sure makes sense to me. Obviously Johnson also had some notable wins before this match, or he wouldn’t have been ranked that high.
@@wrestlermike22 - Ok, I'm wrong. Being told this exact information from an assistant at Iowa & then later on a bus ride by Johnston himself, obviously not reliable sources.
So many of my freinds say wrestling is guys grabbing each other on the ground I'm so tired of hearing that shit No collegiate athlete works harder than wrestlers
@MRfatpersonhater football breeds wrestlers wrestling breeds football players they compliment each other brent metcalf was an all district line backer in high school
Wrestling IS the hardest sport. But there is no need to defend wresting to ignorant guys. They NEED to put down wrestling because it's their defense mechanism against their own internal conflict. They feel threatened by the feelings wrestling evokes in them. If anything, they deserve our compassion because they are in hell. Wrestling is the oldest sport and I see no evidence of it ever going away. Learn to suffer fools gladly. You'll enjoy much more inner peace.
