Hi Gary. As ever, wonderful playing with varied and beautiful tones, fully demonstrating each aspect of this pair of excellent instruments. I could not choose one over the other. Each is a unique, exceptional instrument providing its' own voice, feel and colours. To be without either one would be a significant musical loss. Enjoy your good fortune! Thanks for sharing Ky😊
Great video, Gary, and very timely for me. I bought a 290 on Reverb a couple of weeks ago with Lollar P-90s and like it so much that I'm buying a new walnut I-30 with 55/56 Throbacks tomorrow. I have several high quality guitars and the Collings are right up there with the best of them. Your video cements the decision I made to buy the I-30 after playing it today. Thanks.
Thanks for the kind words. I’m glad the video was helpful. Beware, the Collings I-30LC with Throbaks could very well become your favorite guitar. That’s what happened to me. Circle back and let me know. Or email Me anytime at gairman1@gmail.com Congrats on your Collings guitars!
Nice educational demo for folks wanting to compare these exquisite guitars. I'm hearing more detail from the 30 and more acoustic properties, which is not surprising since it is fully hollow and has a wood quality that is on par with acoustics. The 290 also sounds a hair more immediate attack, brightness, and with less bloom than the 30. I own both as well and think they sound and play differently. I also think the 290 has a bigger neck. Both of mine have the Lollars. The I-30lc may be my favorite and most versatile guitar, but it's a toss with the I-35lcV. Of course, in your hands, it doesn't make much difference -- excellent playing. I would never sell my 30. I have considered selling the 290, but then I play it and change my mind.
@@gair1944 yes..but solid bodies have their place depending on what style you're playing. That's why we all need a bunch of different guitars..ha ha ha (at least the GF buys that anyway)
I just listened back myself. The 290 is similar but maybe more lean? I actually prefer the I-30LC as well. The 290 is great but I wonder; "Will I play it when I have the I-30LC?" The I-30LC is amazing and is going nowhere. That was never a question.
@@gair1944 Yeah, the P90's with the hollow body does seem to fatten it up a bit in comparison. The 290 has a great sound though. I just don't bond with the look as much, so that's part of it for me. I'd be staring at that I-30LC with admiration every day. The 290 not so much.
I may be to late to the party. I love both of the two guitars you are playing. Possibly the 30 may have the edge. I do like the neck pickup on the 290. I am having trouble deciding you may have to keep both.
You came to the same conclusion as I did. Both are great. I also love the neck pu on the 290. The I-30LC is remarkable in its own way and it is magical
Lovely demo, playing most impressive. I have the 290, which I love, but the I-30 in this clip has hotter pups and projects a little more, with a slightly fruitier jangle. The 290 has a more solid nasal sound. Both superb guitars though.
Lol!! 😂 a fruitier jangle?! Love that description. Ha. Well said and I do agree. I love both of these guitars. I would say the I-30LC is very special. But the 290 went to a gig with me tonight and love it so much!
