Great demo! I’ve had the standards in my goldtop for over 8 years and never thought twice about replacing them until a few days ago when I saw Julian Lage playing a 53. Something about the tone made me feel like I needed to find a more early 50’s style pickup. After watching your demo the differences actually swayed me into keeping my standards and fiddling more with the height adjustments. The more pronounced bass of the standard sounded more in line with what I was hearing in the 53. So much variability in those early LP’s. Thanks man! You saved me a ton of time and money!

Great demo, really concise and representative of each pickups qualities. I had some staples in a 1956 Gibson L5 I had. Really nice sound. Sidebar, these were invented by Gibson when, to their horror, they found out Les Paul was using an Alnico rod Gretsch Dynasonic pickup in his "Number 1" Les Paul Gold Top

The 50s are my fav but the staples have nice clarity and brightness I like. And the staple is the only one I like on bridge. I’d probably go with the staples for the clarity, I can always push the lows up on the amp a bit for more meat if I need it, but clarity is not as easily achieved. I think I’d enjoy a staple in the neck and a mini humbucker in the bridge.

Great review. I've had Alnico Poles in my guitar for a couple of years (before any online reviews) and it's great to see the growing interest in them. Perfect pickups if you play many styles but they do lack a little magic as they don't have a very complex character. Based on reviews an my own experience, they might also prefer maple necks to rosewood, and work well in hollow or semi-hollow guitars. They are currently in a Fender JA-90 Tele, but might put them into a different guitar in future
@haskitt

I liked the Alnicos more than I thought I would, but I think they weren't at their best being set to settings that worked well for these other pickups... they really seemed like they were their own thing.

I'm upgrading a Sire Semi-hollow w P90s and researching between Lollar and SD. This is the best/most helpful demo I've seen for either make. I want John's Epi Casino tone across the range and stuck between the 50s wind and Alnicos, though what you said about the Alnicos being too low to drive a tube amp probably nudged me toward the 50s. Now if only there were a shootout between those and SD Antiquities or Vintage...

I closed my eyes the first time I played this demo, I didn't want to listen with my eyes. The second time I watched! It was so close I think one would have to listen to them in person but the Staple was the one that stud out for the lead tones but the cleans it was a toss up for the standard and the 50's wind. The Alnico pole seemed to have a softer attack. Great demo!
@morbidrockgod
@morbidrockgod Год назад
Good job! My favorite overall were the 50's wind too, although I think the standard bridge sounded a bit fuller in the higher gain setting (the one part with the drums). I thought the staples were really nice too, a bit "hi-fi", with the differences between high and low frequencies evened out; I bet they would make great recording pickups, especially for country! The alnico pole ones sounded somewhere between the standards and the staples, perhaps because the the rectangular pole pieces on the staples are made of alnico 5 too! Thank you very much for this great comparison! Great guitar playing and taste! Cheers!

Awesome comparison! Good job staying consistent between pickups with each playing style, it made this vid super useful. I loved the standards, 50s, and the alnico pole piece pickups. The staples didn't do it for me, but might work for metal guys using p90s? If I had to pick a combo I would get standard bridge, 50s neck; 50s on both; or alnico pole piece on both. The standards by themselves sounded great but the 50s had more dynamics probably due to less windings. One thing I like to do is add a treble bleed circuit and turn the volume down a bit. That could get the standards sounding really similar to the 50s at 8/10 on the volume knob, but with some extra room for higher gain. Thanks again!
@haskitt

The standards didn't quite roll off the way I would have liked, but yeah, treble bleed all the way! I will probably end up with the standards again someday, but right now I have the 50s... Just got the guitar back that I installed a triple set of the 50's wound Lollar P90s in. I have to say, as good as this video is, the pickups are even better! I briefly had a 53 goldtop (while selling it for a friend) and it was what turned me on to P90s in the first place. These pickups capture the character, clarity and ballsyness of those better than anything I've ever heard! @@haskitt Absolutely, they have that touch-sweetness of the 50s but with a bit more output and more pronounced creamier mids that just fill up the sound to the level I like. It's hard to describe but they consistently turn up as a favorite for me, considering I'm looking for a bridge P90 in an S-S-H Strat to replace the humbucker. I've checked out Duncans, Fralins, Bareknuckles and whatnot - this video definitely helped me decide on Lollar Alnicos. It's either no clean sounds or just two chords on a bad recording or flat out gain monster videos where you can't tell a P90 from a chainsaw. This clean-to-mean and all the inbetween approach with great playing lets you hear 99% of situations you're gonna play the pickups in and with all the models included it's a dream. Nice comparison. I agree with Barnyard Coral . The Pole ones sound close to a jazzmaster. In clean they all sounded great. The "regular p90s" more bluesy while the staples and the poles have a more "funky" fender like sound. But to me the staples with gain started to sound a bit "unruley" (not in a good way) to me... The alnicos felt a little stiff compared to the 50s and regulars, but maybe a little less so than the staples. Thanks Arthur! That would be a fun combo. They’re not noiseless...I just found the sweet spot in the room! ;-) Middle is hum canceling on all of these sets though. Lollar doesn’t make any “noiseless” singles... very traditional in that way. Cheers!

Great video thank you! Are Reverend compatible with Fender / Warmoth neck pocket size without modifications? I guess the rounded strat style neck heel?
@haskitt
@haskitt 4 года назад
Hey, thought I responded to this, sorry... no modifications necessary as long as you have a strat heel (that was an upcharge for this tele head)! It was a little bit of a tight fit, but I've honestly had aftermarket fender licensed necks fit tighter than this (in a bad way) on fender bodies.

Thanks Mike! That was "Don't Need Anything" by Glen Phillips. One of my all time favorite tunes. I have a full guitar instrumental version here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-u4JWy1ptzT8.html

Great video, thank you for the effort you put in. I own a brand new Reverend Club King 290 with the Bigsby tremolo (which I never use). I play mostly jazzier stuff with clean tone. Do you think switching to a trapeze would change the sound drastically, or is it mostly cosmetic? Was it hard to put a trapeze style tailpiece on yours? Did it fit, or did you need to drill new holes or something? Finally, do you know which model of trapeze tailpiece you've got? Sorry for all the questions, feel free to answer :)
@haskitt
@haskitt 3 года назад
The trapeze reduces weight a bit, and it does change the acoustic tone for sure, and if you don't mute the back end of the strings between the bridge and trapeze you can get some ringy harmonics that work really well for some things, other things I prefer the mute. I had to make a wooden piece to compensate for the angled side of the club king... I've actually been meaning to do a video of my club king partscasters... they're great guitars and I do love the trapeze, though I put the bigsby back on the blue one. I've been thinking of switching back, honestly.

For the most part it was all amp Overdrive… though I can’t recall exactly which amps I used in the demo. I think I might mention it?

You are fully correct, playing and feeling goes over hearing. That said, I am in the market for some dogear p90s for my epiphone casino, and I wouldnt know if I should go standard or 50s wind. I play mainly blues, lo-fi hiphop jazzy stuff and alot of rythmic, melodic stuff, as well as classic rock. So in general, fairly low gain. I get my gain from a fuzz face type pedal, and roll off the volume. (Also enjoy the fuzz full on, sometimes!) Would the dynamic for such playing be nicer on the standards, or the 50s wind? Thank you for your great playing!
@haskitt
@haskitt 3 года назад
I would go 50s with that style list. I don't think you'd be unhappy with the standards, but I did have trouble at times getting them thinned out enough for certain things.

It's really hard to go wrong with Lollar in general... I have special T's in my tele, blackface (now 64 specials) in my godin session, and low wind imperials in my LP. Thanks for all your effort in making this video.. the amount of discipline that it takes to soder the pickups after each play through is really quite impressive. I wouldn't have that kind of patience xD So thank you for your service
