Why the hell aren't the Collins Kids in the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame???? They were young, but they were INNOVATORS. Larry was one hot rock guitarist, and their music was far more "Rock n' Roll" than many of the current inductees.
@Roberto Ribeiro Technically Larry made one of the first punk rock songs (Whistle Bait) and if I read right, then he basically made Dick Dale. I’d say that’s innovation on his part. Don’t know so much about Lorrie though.
pleased to hear you and the others have finally heard of these guys. Around this time Lorrie was once Ricky Nelsons girlfriend, lets face it she had it all, and when she did marry a few years later she retired, but younger brother Lorrie continued a solo career for a few years, the last time they performed together in the States was on Shindig in the late 60s. Glad to say they got back together and played some storming rockabily sets in Hemsby UK, first was in 1993, a full 7 months before their first "comeback" show in the States, We saw them play live at all three Hemsby shows thro the 90s, were fantastic, like so mahy of the 50s American artists it amazed us(and them) that they were largley unknown in their home country. As a child young Larry was mentored by country and early rockabilly guitar-great Joe Maphis, which is why he played a twin neck Mosrite guitar like Maphis before him, was so good he was on tv in 1954 aged just 10 ! Lorrie sadly passed away in 2018, and Larry followed her to rockabilly heaven a few days ago In January 2024, both lived long healthy lives, RIP the Collins Kids
Larry "Kid" Collins. I was 12 and saw them on Ranch Party. I could not believe how good this kid was!!! Amazing talent at such a young age, and for that time, they showed some pretty good showmanship!!!
Clicked on this late at night after seeing photo of Eddie Cochran's grave feeling a bit blue, but this act was like a jolt of electricity to change my mood. And how! Never seen anything like it!
First became aware of Larry and the others last night. Whoa, they were great. Larry was a child prodigy. Am very surprised that I had never heard of him!
Wildly creative and super talented. This song was an Elvis B-side. Elvis and Buddy were just breaking out then. It makes you wonder how the Collins Kids came up with this stage act, very bold for back then. Larry can really play, and you can see how he became a sessions musician. Lorrie is obviously mature beyond her years, and has great stage presence, and a few other charms. With better management, alas, the Collins Kids would have been one of the biggest acts ever.
@@cooldaddy2877 The Collins Kids were performing on TV at THP (Town Hall Party) by FEB, 1954. Elvis did not even release his first Sun record until July 1954. Even Bill Haley and the Comets did not release "Rock Around the Clock" until April of 1954. The Collins Kids, young as they were in 1954 ( Lorrie 12 and Larry 10), were likely the first televised genuine "Rockabilly" act. While Mitch Miller overseeing their recording at Columbia Records tamed the Collins Kids records down to a country sound, the Collins Kids' live stage performances at THP, were genuine "Rockabilly" in sound and the most dynamic stage act of that time. Larry, at age 10 in 1954 was all over the stage and all around big sister Lorrie, long before Chuck Berry released "Maybelline" in May 1955 and began doing his "duck walk" on stage! The time frame proves that the Collins Kids were genuine pioneers of the "Rockabilly" sound, and have been criminally overlooked, except by Rockabilly fans who understand the importance of the Collins Kids.
@@63DW89A Wrong. The early Town Hall Party performances by the Collins Kids were pure Country. Lorrie even said so herself when she appeared in the UK decades later. Bill Haley is still the first.
@@cooldaddy2877 The early THP live shows circa 1954 may have been intended as pure country, but the Collins Kids performances were not. Larry was far more dynamic on stage than any of the Country acts and young 12 year old Lorrie's vocals were already moving into Rockabilly. The Collins Kids even at 10 and 12 years old, were definitely different, more lively and dynamic than the other genuine Country performers at THP. The contrast is clear as early as 1954. The Collins Kids were the first special guests during the first televised Grand Old Opry in 1956, and their performance of "Corinna, Corinna" is pure Rockabilly.
@@63DW89A Larry has also stated that Elvis was first. I supposed the words of both Larry and Lorrie count for nothing. Plain fact is that they were not the first but may have been "dynamic" on stage....but that alone R'n'R does not make!
That boy was good. I think they wound him up real tight before the show, energy pure energy. I never saw this video or the Girl and Boy playing and singing. I heard the song before but never like this. 💓 Loved it, 2 Thumbs Up. 👍👍 This goes to both of them, they both were great.
They were extremely well known. In California and AZ etc. That show was out of Cal. WESTERN SWING, look at the costumes, cowboy hats, string ties, boots. AKA Western Dance Music. Not Rockabilly, not Rocknroll. Find the other acts on the show. Joe Maphis, Bob Wills and The Texas Playboys. Bill Haley was Western Swing, string tie and all. THAT is why he is cited as one of the first RocknRoll guys. That type dance music was already played all over. When Elvis started out, he hit all the Western Dance Music places he could. One of the shows was called Western something, can't think of the name.
+James G With all the availability of lessons just on youtube,it's one of 2 things,,, you either are not practicing enough ( EVERYDAY!) or you might want to try a different instrument ? Not everybody gets to be awesome,,and most that do work really hard to get it.. Best Wishes !
@harpozzz .....and johnnys manager was the 1 who actually told johnny not to ask her out because it could ruin so many lives he was right but a bit sneaky haha...
If this is from '58 and one person here, ARIZJOE, says Elvis was just breaking out and he wonders how the Collin Kids came up with this record I have to say that he/she haven't read the 'book' of Rockn'Roll, as Elvis real break world wide was in 1956. In the South he was already big in '55.
ARIZJOE, It was not management, it was Lorrie running off and getting married.....it took 30 years to get them back together and they sound the same, just look different....
@harpozzz ....ya and johnnys manager was actually the 1 who told johnny not to get involved with her because it could ruin a lot of lives...he was right but a bit sneaky too haha
@devilrobbie25 cashs' manager married her--took her out of show bus, ricky nelson would have married her all he could do was looked dazed at her saying WHY?!?!?!
this was recorded before elvis went into the army to be releashed while in service arond 58, what ever happened to this kid, abtw elvis broke out around 55 and nation wide in 56 get your facts down
The one constant thing in all their performances I've watched( besides their talent) is how Lame the back up bands are ! Musta sucked being shown up by a couple of kids ! LOL !
Chuck.Raney Raney I'm referring more to how the just stand there,,, sure they're not gunna jump around like Larry, but at least look like you've got a pulse..
ahah, yea, that's a legit argument for sure. It's something almost ALL teh Western Artists did. Or more accurately , DIDN'T do. Movement is verboten. I have always wondered if it had to do with the quality of the mics.
