This video shows a Colnago C50 classic frame that came in with a cracked chainstay. What we found was surprising to say the least.
On this channel we show marketing free, real information about the bikes that you ride.

That's the problem with dodgy repairs, they are judged by the paint finish not the structural performance.

Incredible. Was that dropout originally a plug-end inserted into chainstay tube or did they cut right angle at a crack and "create" the male plug end with filler? Why would anyone make a bad steel splint when making a stiff, custom-fit CF splint (that wouldn't have rusted) was the simpler solution? I guess no CF and epoxy in the cabinet, just bondo and paint?

Gotta admire the thinking behind this: “Oh its plastic, that’ll never hold up. Lemme just put in a steel tube instead. Much better for storing in the bike stand at the pub” 👍👍😋

No, actually they knew what they were doing. It was a deliberate job at restoring funcionality to a limited extend. And it seemingly held long enough to outlast any warranties given.

So the tube should have been thinner to match the stifness an not create a stress raiser nearby. Also wonder how long was it since that repair.
@LuescherTeknik
@LuescherTeknik 3 месяца назад
Not really, it failed at the poor bond prep, as shown by the rust at the interface.

@@LuescherTeknik hasn't it started with cracked dropout? While debonding occured only at disassembly

No, the crack was at the dropout to steel tube bond DUE to the poor bond.

Some people are luddites and really attached to the frames they already have. There's also an elegance to repairing something, whether that's most resource efficient or not
@NeelsLotter

That is unusual. I wonder if it is worth repairing, maybe for sentimental value.

Expensive road bikes are the biggest industry Con going...For every 80 pro frames made for the Tour...they expect a failure rate of 10 frames...Carbon fibre is the only construction material that cannot be tested for its breaking point...because its so inconsistent ....This is why people like James Cameron who is a certified engineer...refuse to use it ...Also failure in the fork crown is common...leading to bad accidents !
@Rover200Power
@Rover200Power 2 месяца назад
CF is fine when it is used by competent engineers. Not marketing departments who want to make complex shapes while using as little material as possible to save weight.

Someone "repaired" a seat tube crack with an aluminium tube, until it corroded from the inside and swelled up causing more cracks and a hole in the frame!

Importer: "not a problem we will have your frame fixed under warranty" Would be interesting to know the history of this frame, if the customer knew it was repaired, did they buy 2nd hand etc. Ive heard of some real dodgy stuff done at the factory even, like last years paint scheme under this years paint scheme etc.

@@kevinriseborough1521 Thanks, brings back memories of when I began racing in the early '70's. On the start line on my lowly Peugeot PX-10 totally intimidated by guys on beautiful Colnago's, Masi's, DeRosa's, etc, figured I had zero chance. Wondered why they were nowhere to be seen in the bunch as we sprinted to the finish line (Novice races were too short for breakaways even if we had known how to break away). An epiphany when I finally figured out after 4-5 races "it's not about the bike". Armstrong was right about that part at least. Eventually upgraded to a Schwinn Paramount, fairly plain so I didn't get the idea that my bike was so beautiful I didn't have to pedal.

Justr a paint crack.
@philosuileabhain861
@philosuileabhain861 3 месяца назад
And this is why I will never own a carbon frame. Carbon frames are dangerous for bicycles regardless of cost/manufacturer. A steel or alloy frame will generally give waring signs before complete structural failure, cracks/creaking etc. How many used carbon frames hide a multitude of sins behind a lash up paint job. And that's just the parts of the frame you can see!
