I strongly believe Elvis would still be alive today had it not been for the Colonel's personal greed. The 1973 Hawaii special was Elvis's last great triumph, a challenge he exceeded. For the next 5 years, it was back to the same cities... the same stages...the same crowds. Elvis died of terminal apathy...he simply did not care any more.

Despite everything Elvis could do to waste money, e.g., give away jewelry that cost more than he made from a show, buying everybody a jet ... when he was close to broke ... Elvis never had a year when he didn't make money. More correctly, Parker made him work enough to make a profit. re: movies, Elvis was offered the role Glen Campbell took in TRUE GRIT. The Colonel held Elvis back from becoming even bigger, going on world tours and doing more interviews. Colonel Tom Parker pushed Elvis to the very edge, pressuring him to do more and more shows, to keep throwing him up on stage no matter how bad his health was. Some people say Elvis died of Drugs, But what really killed him was Colonel Tom Parker!
Kept him from good interviews, movies that he wanted to do that could have been oscar worthy and touring the world to see his other fans outside of the U.S. His greed probably broke his joy and spirit. This man is so full of crap! He is the reason Elvis is dead. He got Elvis hooked on Barbiturates and all sorts of other drugs. He was also a terrible gambler with tons of debt. He saw dollar signs with the opportunity to erase his lengthy debts to have Elvis performing in Las Vegas. He should have never been allowed to run Elvis’ life into the ground like he did.
I just came here after watching the movie Elvis. I wanted to see the interviews with Colonel Tom Parker. He sounds so cold in this one. Looks like Tom Hanks played his character really well.
@@playingwithrami yeah…I also felt the same after watching this video. But I was okay with it while watching the movie. That accent fits the character though ut does not match with that of the real Tom Parker.

I read a comment out there ,if it wasn't for Colonel Parker Elvis would not have been what he was without C Parker. And he would still be alive. something like that. Wow to the person that wrote that , you have your opinion and you're entitled to it. Colonel Parker was a fake the entire time. And Elvis did not know it. If he could have toured around the world , alone that would have made himv happy and he would still been alive just from that. But the dumbass colonel Parker couldn't go out of the states. Therefore he should have been fired. Elvis then should had fired that fat sob,and God ...y another manager. Because there were a lot of great managers in the seventies. Elvis already Was famous through the 50s and 60s. When he made his 68 come back. He arranged at himself along with someone else I can't remember the name. Colonel Parker wanted a Christmas show. Come on a Christmas show on your first appearance in 10 years. I laughed. Elvis did the right thing , Elvis 68 special comeback ,and he killed it. Right there and then he should have took on a new manager. Elvis would have still been alive fans would have been screaming etc.
Not forgetting that Colonel Parker was getting 50% of Elvis's earnings. This is the epitome of greed as far as I am concerned. What type of agents get that amount of money from their artists????
Well, Marvin, I have been considering this logically and unemotionally over the past few days after seeing the new Elvis Presley movie. How many of us in the general public know the details of the business relationship that Elvis shared with Parker for so many years? Was Elvis so weak and timid that he allowed himself to be abused and used for years on end? He had no cojones to stand up for himself? I don't think so. That does not speak well of Elvis. Not any sort of "King." Let's suppose two men decide to start a business partnership to create a new business together. Like Hewlett and Packard. It is by nature a 50/50 partnership, where they share equally the expenses and rewards. They are equal partners in the arrangement. Not the typical agent/client relationship. The typical run of theatrical agents may charge only 10 or 15 percent of the celebrity's income as a fee for certain services like booking shows, doing publicity, arranging for travel, negotiating with producers, etc. But then they usually have an agency with a number of other clients. So the artist or talent may only pay ten or fifteen percent of his income, but he then he may only get ten to fifteen percent of the agent's time and attention, if that. Brian Epstein charged the Beatles 25 percent, but he represented a roster of other artists also from whom he collected money. The Beatles did not get his full time and attention. But even so, when he died, they did not last long managing themselves as a group did they? The band broke up soon after. So would the Beatles have broke as big as they did without Brian Epstein's unique knowledge and talents? Hard to say. So I think the Colonel Parker/Elvis Presley relationship was a unique and rare one in the entertainment world. Certainly not typical. I think when they formed their partnership they decided to go big and shoot for the moon, to make Presley the biggest thing in show business, a superstar, not a minor celebrity. Which they succeeded at, maybe way above their wildest dreams. But to achieve that they both agreed to give the project their full time and attention, to pull out all the stops and go for broke. Elvis Presley got Parker's full time and attention as his agent. But 50 percent of nothing is nothing. If Elvis had flopped, Parker would have been destitute probably, at least for a while. Anyway, that is the thoughts I have had about it. I have decided not to join the Col. Parker lynch mob. But I lived in Memphis for a number of years back in the 60's. I did not know Presley or Parker or have any connections with them. But I know the city and am interested in Memphis music, etc. Which is why I write all this, I suppose.
I heard from one of the Memphis mafia. Can't remember his name. He was on RU-vid. He saw Colonel Parker blow a million in an HR. Disgusting. I felt bad at the end for Elvis. So heartbreaking 💔
He had a deal with the casino, he brought them Elvis so he only had to pay .50 cents on the dollar for every thing he lost. So if he lost a million he only had to come up with 500,000
This guyś claim to fame is Elvis. Granted he made a few good decisions that helped Elvis but ultimately worked Elvis into the ground. One of many reasons why Elvis took drugs was so that he could maintain the insane number of concerts the Colonel demanded him to do. Often times he had to do extra concerts to make up for the Colonels gambling debts. A real piece of work this dork is.
Just look at Parker's expression throughout this interview. No warmth, no friendliness, he's just cold, calculating. The word 'asshole' is written all over his face.
@@mr.patrickaloysiusbartholo4727 Mr. Presley couldn’t even leave the country bc this old fat fool wasn’t a citizen & he didn’t want to get thrown in jail!

I agree he couldn’t rest because he was TCB for not only him self but all his friends and family. He had to keep working so all those people didn’t have to get real jobs to earn a living!!!
What really makes me angry with this man is that he was taking ALL of the money from souvenirs, tee shirts, posters and concert stuff!! This represents far more money than E. was earning, plus he had ALL of the publishing royalties from the songs!! I never ever have even heard of such a huge rip off from an Artist!
No he wasn't! Parker negotiated a 50-50 split on merchandising with Elvis and Elvis was fine with that. As far as his manager fee he got the standard 25% which was the norm at that time for managers.
@Elle Marie Priscilla really was and still is his angel walking on earth..keeping his legacy alive, fulfilling dreams that he could not live while he was here, taking care of Graceland and more...
I think Tom Hanks could have nailed the accent we hear in this clip if he wanted too. There was a good bit of artistic liberty taken throughout the movie, seems that's where Hanks went with it, a emphasis on the Dutch accent. During this interview there are moments where you can hear that Dutch accent, Hanks just used those moments for the entire script, maybe trying to portray him more for what he was rather than what he was trying to cover up
I’m sure he did it on purpose, but Hanks accent didn’t sound close to being Dutch 😂. It was a cartoony villain accent with a bit of German thrown in there. But yeah non-dutch people won’t care anyways. It fit Luhrmans chaotic style.

parker only cared about parker and gambling debts. at time just before death he screwed elvis over contract with RCA and when all was said and done Elvis ended up with about 10 % after parker and RCA got done with the contract. also parker on the day of death had Vernon sign a royalty contract for 85% to go to him and 15 % went to estate. if that is not a screwing what is and RCA was as bad as parker because they were in cahoots with parker all the way for years and if elvis ever got what he had coming to him then he never would of worried about money like he did. Elvis dad Vernon was the patsy for parker because he was so tight and ignorant to hillbilly ways that parker got to him so he would make Elvis sign these contracts with parker.

Knowing what we truly know now the Col hurt Elvis Presley the man more than he ever helped him. He is a liar & a crook that only cared about himself. Elvis forever felt he owed the Col so he couldn't break away. If he would have toured Europe or Asia the sky would have been the limit for Elvis & that boy could act when he had the chance like in his earlier movies. Sad thing is the world will never see how Elvis could have been. I miss him.
HAHA. Oh yeah. Elvis was such a miserable failure because of Parker. He could have been a much bigger star (really?). First, I loved Elvis. But the guy could not act his way out of a wet paper bag. He was horrible, even in those God-awful cookie cutter movies that were created around him. And again, not to take away from Elvis, but good management makes all the difference in the music world. Elvis was playing holes before Parker got a hold on him, and Parker pulled him out. Yes, Parker was a sleazebag, but you gotta give the devil his due. He did a heck of a job with Elvis. As far as his happiness, a drug problem can for sure make you an unhappy camper, and the person not even know it. Elvis is who made Elvis unhappy.
I cannot believe that this man, obviously so close to death, could still be spouting such a pack of lies. He robbed from Elvis, kept him from being the great artist he could have been and manipulated him into an early grave. NO ONE is more responsible for the wasted talent of Elvis Presley through most of the 60's (the comeback special and 1969 being the exceptions) and all of that touring in the 1970's. Elvis wanted to tour more? That's a laugh. If he ever said that to Parker it was because he had allowed himself to become a puppet to Parker's puppeteering and was being made to say and probably believe it. If only the people around Elvis had the balls to tell him that, he may be still around today.
Yes, Dolly's and Whitney Houston's later version were by far the best versions of that song. Dolly is a smart lady who had already had a huge country hit with that song. I don't think she would have bowed to the Colonel's demands for anything.
You are quite right except for one thing. I believe that Presley would NOT have had a number one HOT 100 hit with "I Will Always Love You". That would not have happened. It was a song so strongly identified with Dolly at that time, he would not have gotten away with it. He may have been able to have recorded so many other artists songs and have had many people fall all over him for doing so but not this one. Elvis' "Burning Love" was his last No. 1 and that was largely because it was a return of the Elvis of old that mainly recorded songs that were written for him and no one else. "I Will Always Love You" hardly qualified as that.
Fun fact : In addition to being a con man - Parker was also an illegal alien - who would not be able to return to the USA - if he left the country. Parker wouldn't let Elvis tour internationally for fear of losing control of his cash cow.

Colonel Tom Parker's real name was Andreas Cornelis (Dries) van Kuijk. He was born in the Netherlands and illegally immigrated to the U.S. at age 20. He was wanted by Dutch authorities for suspicion of murder. He worked hard to lose his Dutch accent, and avoided most interviews for that very reason. "The Colonel" was looking out for himself. He deprived Elvis of doing things he longed to do...like perform in other countries where he was loved (England, Japan, etc). What really killed me is that Elvis wanted to be an actor, not a joke! It was his dream to be taken seriously as an actor. Instead, selfish, greedy Tom Parker went for the "gold" -- for himself!!
There is a story about the colonel that goes like this. When he was a young man in Holland, where he hailed from, he was known as a bit of a flashy dresser as he used to get about town wearing a yellow raincoat, a bit of a trademark look. There was a young woman he was seeing who was last seen alive with a man that resembled the colonel and he was wearing a yellow raincoat. The Police went on a search for the Man in the yellow rain coat but didn't find him. . .On the same night this woman that was apparently murdered, the colonel went missing. He left his home in Holland, without telling friends or family, and somehow he made it to the USA, where he wound up working as a Carney. His friends and family never heard from him again till one night his sister saw him on TV. The story goes that the real reason the Colonel never left the USA or applied for citizenship or would never let Elvis travel, except for the stint in the army, was because he feared that Interpol would intercept him and interrogate him as to why he left Holland in such a hurry...I found this story on the internet when I was writing a paper on Elvis Presley, if you search Colonel Tom Parker Its out there somewhere on the web.
Do you have a source for this? I heard he was implicated in a murder in the USA too. A woman found murdered behind a greengrocer he worked for. But I'm not sure if these are just heresy and whatever
Elvis was a shining beacon that shined so bright that no matter what was in front of him he would have become famous either way. His talent and ground-breaking methods would eventually materialise into stardom with or without a manager.
Sometime back in the 70's, around the time Elvis was extremely bored and in need of new challenges, Japan offered millions of dollars for Elvis to perform there. Instead of jumping at the chance, Parker turned it down cold, possibly because of his illigal alien status. Who knows, maybe if a Japan tour had worked out, that might have helped Elvis' career. All Elvis did was tour the United States. That must have gotten old after a while.

He should have asked Parker why he lied about his nationality and wouldn't let Elvis tour over seas for that reason because he couldn't tour with Elvis.
Why in the hell did they have Tom Hanks do such a crazy accent in the movie? The real Colonel Parker sounded nothing like the way Hanks portrayed him in the movie.
I can not comment on what I dont know about. As decent of a person Elvis was, and I can say that by seeing him in concert videos and a small portion of interviews and realizing how much he was devoted to his fans of which I am a big one. I really hope Col. Parker did the right thing concerning Elvis's livelyhood and sanity. I heard many of the Memphis maphias comments being negative towards Parker, and if they are true then I would hate to be Parker while standing in front of our maker!
Elvis also wanted to tour Germany and Europe to pay respect to some shoulders but Colonel Parker said no. Another thing is that Tom Parker told Me. Presley that he was getting his U.S. passport, but didn't get it while Elvis was alive. He also didn't treat Elvis as a human being but rather treating him like a circus show.
Remember that he was a showman for the local carnival before he met him which is the reason why for so many years throught his career he held Elvis back from doing a worldwide tour instead making up bullshit reasons that his fans would become violent and rowdy for security purposes in actually he had to keep his 5 year Las Vegas contract together
@@Railhog2102 Look closer towards Parker's immigration status, he never got his U.S. passport though he could've fixed that issue with a phone call to Lynden B. Johnson.
Elvis never did any concerts outside of the United States and that's because of Tom Parker who came to United States Illegal and was afraid he would not get back into the country.
I wish Tom Hanks would have watched this so he didn't have to do the bizarre foreign accent while playing Colonel Tom Parker in the upcoming Elvis movie starring Austin Butler. I hear the movie is GREAT despite the off putting accent. At least to Elvis fans who knew the Colonel was born in the Netherlands and came to the US illegally at 20, but did NOT speak with an accent when he first met Elvis in 1955. I have NO idea why Tom came up with the accent. He even dodged the question at the Cannes Film Festival.
I've seen the film, and agree, Hanks accent is terrible and make him sound like a weird James Bond villain but I think they were going for that because they really wanted to make him out to be the bad guy.
Yea...Tom may put his own creativity in. We dont want to see just a copy cat without any artistic originality or creativity. Otherwise, its documentary film. You can just watch utuve, real Colonel. I am Brazilian and since I was a child I like Elvis and I always look for new information about his life. I didn't see much about Parker other than a few films, but we can see that he was a blood-sucker from Elvis! Unfortunately Elvis is no longer with us to tell and express his feelings but he is very much alive in his art! Every time I hear or watch a vibrating show as if I were watching it live! Parker must be answerable for what he did to the King of Rock!
He took half then gave 25% of his half to the mob. So Col got only 25% himself. The mob opened the doors as the Col made the deals. When Elvis spoke up and tried to take back power, the mob got itchy and put the pressure on the Col, then on to Elvis. Eventually, Elvis fought back in the 70's and everyone thought Elvis was lost. The truth was, he was being threatened not to rebel or else..pretty much. Both the Col and Elvis were kinda trapped in a way.
This is the guy who walked in Elvis room in vegas and Elvis had his head in bucket of ice water cause he wasn't well and Tom Parker said all that matters tonight is Elvis to be on that stage nothing else matters.
He was a piece of shit of the worst sort, a criminal and a thieving liar, I don’t know what he had over Elvis’s head for Elvis to keep putting up with his endless control of him, Elvis wouldn’t stand up to the old bastard and neither would Vernon, I to this day am still baffled by the dynamics of that whole relationship/deal between them 🙁
