I think it's important to remember that the Runabout isn't really a fighter or even a bomber. It's a way for DS9 to project itself. They function as a sort of mobile base for Starfleet teams. A Runabout even has 2 decks, if I recall. Their internal shots make them look extremely roomy. When you see a runabout, you should probably feel as if you just saw a Patrol Boat or Cutter show up. Where as if a Raptor or Starfury shows up, you should feel like an attack helicopter just showed up. Completely different mission profiles.

Damn, 2004?! - I feel so old now lol Great episode guys, always loved this ship, very much the work horse of the Colonial fleet, Viper pilots get all the glory but they would be nothing without a Raptor scouting the way ;-)

the best way I can sum up the awesomeness of this ship is when Adama says I want a marine Strike Team a Raptor you know it's about to be business

I don't know if anyone here plays the game bsg squadrons but, if you like the fight craft from bsg then its a great way to see a lot of other designs from that world that dreamed were up just for the game. I like it because it sort of fills out the world a bit more as craft that fit different roles the Raptor and Viper don't fill that a military would have.

The Raptor is a futuristic version of a Blackhawk helicopter. A true multi role craft.

Scale kinda makes sense if you put an overhead of a uh6 Blackhawk and a fighter like an f18 next to each other. The transport is all fuselage and the fighter is all flight control surfaces, engines, fuel and ammunition storage, and weapon hardpoints

My thoughts; - On forward sensor mount with the three cables, seems to suggest this can be swapped out for different sensor packages quickly. - I feel like the three holes on the leading edge of each wing are internal cannon ports. With heavier caliber cannon being able to be fitted externally like on the assault raptor. - On the underside it looks like there are three internal weapons bay doors. - On the left hand side there is a probe like fitting, inflight refueling probe that can extend forward? - I wonder where the dispensers are for the countermeasures?

The Raptor in size is more comparable to the OH-6 Cayuse (Hughes 500) than the UH-60 Blackhawk. That is in size and role. A proper heavy lift and logistics chassis was missing from the reboot.

The Raptor is a great design. It's a combination AWACS, Electronic Warfare Platform and assault helicopter.

The Stealth Ship could be flown in the PS game WipeOut the aesthetic is very similar to one of the main race teams called Feisar

The box in the front might be a FLIR (Foorward Looking InfraRed) pod? Would definetely be useful in a space-based Search and Rescue operation. Deep space is cold.

The triangle is for firefighting. If there is an onboard fire, they blunge a firefighting spear into that spot to fill the inside with foam.

I know star citizen isn't a TV show and it is a game but the ships look great and i wound love you to cover some of them.

I'd love to see your guys' take on the Nostromo or Sulaco from Alien/Aliens. What is your opinion of the Valkyrie/Veritech from Macross/Robotech? How about your take on either Thunderbird 3 or 5?

The Raptor is never big enough to carry any useful cargo load. They used it in the show as a VIP transport, but it was designed as a Scout class Recon and rescue ship. Never really meant for atmospheric flight, it can, despite the wings being completely squared off. Something that always made me laugh in the show. When ever you saw this in motion in the flight desk having just landed, there would be a guy waving it forward with light battons, while another guy was pulling it on a pallet truck.

Well it's certainly an interesting ship design.

The red triangle markings are a warning that the craft has ejection seats.

Missing the TOS BSG shuttle craft. That was large and believeable for it's role.

I enjoyed BSG: TOS, but BSG: TNG blew my mind.

It looks like it has 5 Thrusters on the bottom and 3 landing skids. Also some additional slatted vents that might be involved in the hovering function in atmosphere It looks like it's designed to fly in a more normal flight path in space as it only has very limited manoeuvring thrusters for space flight. The only ones I can spot are on the back of the lower tail booms and the landing thrusters underneath (especially the small ones) but there appears to be some micro-thrusters on the nose under the cockpit both on the front and sides and several on the leading edges of the wings so it does have some - I think I can see a few on the underside rear too.

On the bottom view, I see 3 landing gear. You got the wing leading to a round tube. That tube appears to be one of the landing thruster. Follow that is the landing gear. One the right side is the same but opposed way. There is a land thruster near the front just behind the front landing gear. I send a picture on facebook where I think is the landing gears and landing thruster are.

19:21 - I think you guys are talking about seperate parts of the ship in the landing gear/thruster debate. It's got both. 3 landing pads, 3 thrusters. EDIT: Sometimes I think you guys need a telestrator thing to point out what you're talking about.

The underside of the raptor shows 3 sets of panels on a rise in the center of the craft, that looked to me to be closed louvers for a downward thrusting engine similar the ones on the X32 VTOL fighter. That would make the three small objects the retracted landing gear.

I still like the realism of the design for the Starfury even more for a pure spacecraft. The Raptor is great for what it was designed for, but the Viper would be best in-atmosphere.

I'll put this at # 4 on my all-time list. #3 - Eagle from Space:1999 #2 - USS Defiant from DSNine #1 - Danube-class runabout, also from DSNine. (Whose Eaglemoss model I haven't picked up in almost an hour... 😂😂😂😂) And a question - RDM famously dislikes the 'science' end of science fiction, so there's very little data on specs in the show. Do either of you (or anyone else) know if anyone has privately expanded on this, put out actual spec books?

I suppose those prongs could be pitot tubes, but why more than one? Definitely would have more than one dradis aerial, maybe one for ELINT, IFF receiver, and weather for atmospheric flight. I'd bet there's also a target designator of some kind in the housing too.

There are landing gear, the show has scenes of them being taxied around.

It doesn't look like an attack, recon, troop transport vehicle at all. It's bulbous look screams work vehicle of some type. Imagine it floating around space stations.

The exposed engines are a really bad idea, though. Micrometeorites or dust, let alone a stray bullet, would tear those things apart, especially at the relative velocities of spaceflight. Just put a cover on that stuff: Chief Tyrol will thank you...

This is the space version of a UH-60 BlackHawk.

this thing is totally overglorified for some reason. i mean in the end it shoots like 10 nukes on that giant cylon basestar and wins the day which means it had higher firepower than galactica and pegasus at any given point in the show for some reason...

Only criticism I ever had with the raptor is I thought given its mission they made it too small. I always believed it should have been maybe a 1/4 again larger because in general I see the real world equivalent being the UH-60 Black Hawk with a length of 64 ft and the viper being the F-16 with a length of 49 ft. Anyways its just my two cents.
