Always loved Babylon 5. Being able to watch both STDS9, and this show, provided me with some of the best times I had watching TV. To top it off having Walter Koenig appear as a great recurring character on Babylon 5 was just the icing on the cake.

The Minbari are the most powerful of the "younger" races. They're not even really that. They're sort of a race stuck between the Frist ones, ancients, and the young races, like the Earth Alliance, Narn, Drazi etc. They have three casts, warrior, worker and religious cast. These had been at each others throats throughout the Millennia, until they were finally united by Valen, a Minbari not born of Minbari. ;) Minbari do not have large crew compliments, due to the fact that their ships employ very advanced A.I. which runs a lot of the ship operations. Their ships do not employ shielding, as one would understand from the Star Trek universe, instead relying on an advanced crystalline composite material, made on their home world, which has large areas with crystalline resources. They do not use chemical engines, they instead use gravitic energy, sourced from their artificial quantum singularity reactor. This also allows for their ships to have artificial gravity, and to be a lot more agile than E.A. ships, and it gives their ships weapons quite a bigger kick than most other races'. The Minbari home world is mostly ice... (very cold) maybe that's why their ships have an "aquatic" look. But if you compare the look of the Minbari bone crests, and the ship design, there is some similarity as well. The front and back pointy things are antimatter beam weapons. The top, is a highly powerful antimatter cannon, which takes a while to charge, is powered directly from the ship power source, run off energy,, making it hugely powerful. A Sharlin (battle) class cruiser, can single handedly erase all life on a planet, scorch the surface, in the matter of an hour, according to certain sources. When making the show, J.Michael Straczynski wanted to make Earth ships, as honest to life as possible, going by our current design preferences, i.e. not so much focus on aesthetics, and instead on function. That's why the middle of the ship (Omega class destroyer) rotates, to create artificial gravity. The aft section contains the engines, and possibly the fusion reactor(s), so the crew is a ways off from the radiation. The front of the ship showed, contains a hangar deck, where they launch Stary Furies (fighters) from; as well as the ships most powerful X-ray lasers (Technology they E.A. got from another race, possibly the Dilgar, Centauri or Narn). Much of the technology shown, is made from a "realistic" stand point. By that I mean, its technology, extrapolated from how our current tech, and how it would possibly develop in the next 200 years. This is one of the bits that I personally LOVE about the show. It makes it more real, some how. Another thing I love is the fact that they haven't sugar coated humans and human behaviour, like Star Trek has. The Earth alliance is more like the EU, or the US, rather than the Federation concept of a united, Utopian Earth. Again, more realistic. Corporations kind of run the show, back on Earth, which going by today's world, again seems realistic. [SPOILER ALERT] The media in the show lies a lot, and portrays the show's heroes as crooks, especially, after Earth becomes a dictatorship, ruled over by one, insane man. He in turn takes orders from "other", darker forces. Earth has poverty, unemployment, internal strife, racism, xenophobia, and a few civil wars here and there, with its colonies. But it all works out in the end.... just not during the show's five seasons. hahaha On the other hand, Earth's religions have made peace with each other; the show has openly gay people (made in the 90s), early in its run it had a woman president, Russians are Americans are BFFs, and humans are to some extent the role models for other younger races, as well as leaders. So YES, you NEED to watch Babylon5. It's still my favourite SciFi show. Hands down! It needs to be revived. Please do more on B%. :)

Angelfish? B5 was a show you needed to pay attention to. So many hints and off handed comments build on the later seasons. And you see more of the different points of view of humans depending on what faction they worked for, The Earth Government, the military, corporations, Psi Corps. Its wasn't the typical one big happy family of humans vs the universe. If I had to compare it to a current show, Westworld comes to mind. And like others have pointed out already, it seem to be used as reference material for DS9.

Make sure to tell Stuart, "If you go to Z'ha'dum, you will die..." Really surprised he didn't see this series. Paramount took a lot of ideas from the copies of the screenplay they had to create DS9.

the minbari uses gravity pulse drive system to get around, also on top fin is the main beam cannon, some parts of the battle Cruiser are organic and it use to repair damage during battle

The Minbari were the most advanced of all the younger races in the B5 universe. The protrusions sticking out are cannons, all beam weapons. The fixture in the top fin is also a beam weapon (seen in movie Third Space). The Minbari use gravitic propulsion which are produced by the big fin on the back and the side fins. Hull is a crystalline alloy. Not organic
@laviliterthefirst
@laviliterthefirst 7 лет назад
Exactly, you can tell the propulsion is that fin when the Trigati is destroyed by slicing that in half...amazing scene.
@christopherbrase5307
@christopherbrase5307 7 лет назад
They have done away completely with particle thrust system and use magnetogravitic drives instead (i.e. ones that manipulate gravity around the ship, propelling it in most any direction). Their weapon systems are some kind of "slicer beam" particle cannons, powerful enough to destroy some capital ships with a single blow in many cases. Power systems are based on artificial quantum singularities (black holes). Minbari military ships are equipped with sensor deflection grids which function as a "cloaking device", making their ships invisible to the sensors of many alien races. Starship hulls are constructed using a "polycrystalline alloy" more durable than most conventional materials.
@NERvshrd
@NERvshrd 7 лет назад
Is that from internet material, or confirmed by canon sources? I only ask because I've seen the same info online on a couple of sites, but they don't cite any sources, whereas the sites which do state their sources explicitly do not mention antimatter beams, etc.
@Skaarjy
@Skaarjy 7 лет назад
I think the Mimbari had abandoned antimatter weapons because of their short range. The beams you do see are some sort of beam that breaks down the molecular structure.

Great Episode. regarding some of the questions, the long pipes at the front and back are the main canons, same as the side. the short pipes are antennas and tractor beams. The big fin at the back is the engines, the Mimbari use gravimetric engines which moves the ship by manipulating gravity fields to generate thrust.

Yeah makes sense they get good views on Review vids - there is a reasonable amount of vehicles and tech in B5 to speak to their interests and there is nothing on after Jan so - yeah Fleetyards reviews of Babylon 5 would be a nice idea. In the mean time re the Fleetyard eps i'd appreciate The station getting a review (or perhaps B4) and also at least one Vorlon ship and one Narn ship - for the sake of completeness.. then if they get good views there is dozens more. (and that isn't even much of an exaggeration either).

By coincidence, I happen to be re-watching Babylon 5 after not having seen it for 20 years or so! The sizes of the ships compared to the Enterprise surprised the hell out of me! I knew the Minbari ship would be BIG but not THAT big! And I would have thought the Earth Alliance capital ships were about the size of the Enterprise! (Maybe a bit bigger, since they have to use the rotating center section for artificial gravity.)

Honestly, I feel like no matter if it's Vorlon, Xindi, Wraith, YV, whatever, a lot of these factions just end up being like pasted into the IP so that it's like "hey, look, this faction grows... however much of their tech, and they're probably either the tangential Bad Guys or extinct", and there never really seems to be much exploration of that kind of substitution beyond allowing the fans to recognize that particular faction. I mean even the YV, all we really got was "they were biotech. they got hit by the aftermath of someone else's Morning War. Doing anything but roll over and take it 'corrupted' them. Their sentient homeworld cut them off. They went apeshit." Just... "we need a new villain." "Okay. Let's just ramp up the shallowest contrasts."

Hyperspace was once described as an analog to an ocean environment. So more advanced races, spending more time in hyperspace, had a more aquatic feel to them. Minbari was one of the most advanced race without organic technology.

Contrary to the ships appearance, the ship is not organic in construction like many of the First ones ships but is constructed out of high density crystalline material that provides better protection than the armor used by the Centauri. The ship also has powerful shield to protect the ship and are capable of stopping most weapons. These shields both use Gravimetric waves and radiation shielding to prevent energy weaponry together to achieve a more powerful shield.

The "torpedo microbe" structures appear to be weapon hard points in "In the beginning". The central lance is also seen as one. The fishtail is drive system, and we find this out when the Trigatti is shot up by another Sharlin. Also there's at least one other destroyed by a Nova class ship ramming it. Novas are like Omegas but with no Leonov (space odyssey 2010) inspired rotating section. And a lot of big guns that supposedly interfere with doing anything but shooting due to power drain.

ok guys, should've been more specific - no shields in the "Star Trek" sense. B5, imo, has a far more nuanced system of defences than ST, relying more on variants of modern electronic and ballistic warfare defences - anti tracking and anti lock-on systems, ABM's and interceptors, tracking projectile weapons, laser nets and of course rail guns.

Even though B5 came before the RDM Galactica, a fighter-jock quote from Galactica applies here: "Broken formation, razzle-dazzle, don't let 'em use their targeting computers, and for frak's sake stay out of Galactica's firing solution!". Possibly actually inspired by B5 combat scenes...

@Jack_Stafford
@Jack_Stafford 7 лет назад
Excellent briefing! Very impressed that you got the official models from the show. Samuel hit it on the head when he said the Minbari were much more enlightened than Earthers. So their ships reflect a harmony of the various castes of their advanced society and include religious and artistic considerations to a much larger degree than the very practical humans so their ships can be beautiful and intimidating at the same time, also being very functional for its purpose as a warship. The Minbari would roughly equate to the Vulcans in the Enterprise era being mystical and holding back some technology from humans, but even more advanced than Vulcans. This ship would roughly be like a Romulan warbird if you had to force it into a Star Trek role. I highly recommend the series, it gets into very deep subjects that mirror our society, much like the original Star Trek did, including terrorism discrimination and politics and how that can affect and divide a society. After the first season there's an epic story arc that continues through most of the series rather than each episode being self-contained, with very intellectual and thought-provoking material. Definitely a must-see for fan of sci-fi. I would place it just above Battlestar Galactica as far as a deep and satisfying storyline to go along with all the technology of the future. Unfortunately the CGI on the show seems a bit dated and actually was rendered just a short distance from my house in the centre of the States! Not the typical California production. But just like we have to look past some of the effects from the original Star Trek, it has an ambitious and rewarding storyline; a complicated but satisfying story arc thst is far beyond anything Trek ever attempted. But it definitely did get a lot of inspiration from Trek in many ways when it comes to communicators Earth Alliance a space station representing the alliance that Earth is in which is located in a very strategic position in a galactic sense like DS9 and some of the basic characteristics of the primary alien races in a rough sense. There are basically races that are like the Klingons romulans and Vulcans but fleshed out with a lot more depth rather than being one note characteristics for each race they are much more varied like humans are. Compared to Star Trek where essentially all Klingons are the same to a great degree. The ships of each race reflect their essential characteristics. I'm a big fan of the Centauri who were a great Empire with a glorious past but now in Decline so everything from their social-class defining hair to their elaborate clothing to extravagant Starships are designed with a great flair reflecting their glorious Imperial past. Hopefully a Centauri Cruiser is on your radar for the future! Thanks again for featuring this ship from this fantastic series that any serious Trek fan will enjoy!

Minbari use a gravitic propulsion system. The fins project the gravity well in the direction they want the ship to go. For fire arcs they actually have a very wide arc as seen in the shows they can focus about 60 degrees left or right of center line. From a broad side they dont have much coverage but for a ship that big you want to come at your enemy front on to present as small of a target as you can vs a huge broad side of a barn that is the side of that ship.

Minbari cruiser guns are in gun ports that open and close. The antenna arrays are for navigation in hyperspace between the various gate beacons. Although the ships of the line can open their own jump into hyperspace they are are still constrained to navigating between the beacons. The design has evolved from the use of Vorlon technology for various systems.

The things on the side were weapons from memory (you saw them firing in the series). When you saw them firing, those ships were bristling with weapons across various points from the hull. Rear section was a gravitic drive from memory (it has a similar configuration to the white star ships which shared minbari tech). Theorising here, but the big boom at the front "might" be something to do with navigation in hyperspace. Remember reading somewhere (can't remember exactly) that the large front boom on the front of earth force ships (which looks similar) was something to do with this. A bit like a towed array on a submarine, which needs to be kept away from the hull in order to reduce interference.

You nailed the influence for the design of the ship. It's stated in the DVD extras. They're also bio mechanical and self healing. They're not as organic in nature as the Vorlon or Shadow ships but more so than anything humans built and that includes The Excalibur.

I really like the size comparisson. I did not know the Narn ships were so small. You really don't get the feeling they are when watching the show. I my mind the Earth destroyers were huge and all the other ships were about the same size. Makes sense now that the humans commented on how big and ugly the Mimbari Cruisers were.

The Minbari I have a conch-like antler. They are, usually, carved until various formations based upon caste & rank. Only the Vorlon & Shadow vessels are truly organic, but the Minbari vessels, & later the Whitestars, are covered with an organic skin, which comes from the Vorlons. The ships are like giant Angel fish. The fins in the back are a gravitic drive. The ship is capable of opening a jump point to, or from, hyperspace, & later quantumspace.

I followed B5 and played many games, read many sources on lore and technology. Always found it to have some of the most interesting ships. The Sharlin was always an impressive vessel and to think their design at the time B5 season 1 is set is 800 years old. From a while ago I found the following details which seems in line with various sites Armour: Stratified/layered armour of polychrystalline meshes and heavy refractory alloys Propulsion: Gravemetric, Large fin at back creates the main field, 3 smaller ones on extremities focus the field. Weapons: Anti matter neutralise particle streams. Aimed without mechanical parts but with more gravimetric technology. EMP projectors Power: 3 very advance fusion reactors and main source was a quantum singularity.

Hello there. The fins are pat of the gravity propulsion system (which is also an important part of their stealth/jamming systems.). The mouth like thing at the base of the upper fin are likely the Electro-pulse gun which is used to disable smaller vessels (and was used to disable Sinclairs fighter.). The ship does not have shields. Shields are rare among the younger races in B5, only a few have them (Of note though is that the white star does have a type of shields given by the Vorlons.). Hmm something else you may wish to talk about is the rather cool command bridge of the Sharlin, it was quite unique.

Yes I think it mentioned in the semi-canonical Novels that Mimbari ships are partly constructed and partly grown - I think the hulls are also self sealing/self repairing too. I'm not sure how smart the ships are compared to the Vorlon ships which are semi-sentient and bonded to their pilots. I'm sure they made a joke once about someone talking to a Whitestar ship but since they are a 3 way Hybrid I'm not sure how indicative that is of Mimbaris ship intelligence. But I don't think it would be unreasonable to say they are 'alive' in some sense.

@Trekyards The Minbari use a Magnetic/Gravitic proplusion system powered by artificial quantum singularity similar to romulan tech...but more powerful. The fins are a part of emiter system for the ships propulsion. In fact, if you could severely damage or destroy the finns, you would cripple the ship. However the ship uses a type of crystalline hull armor which reflects/refracted a percentage of the energy hitting the ship. Of all the "younger races", no one was able the challenge the Minbari because of this very ship. No they arent organic. The weapons systems are neutron based and are able to cut through targets. Theres nothing that separates nor are the Minbari shown to be aquatic. You guys should research the Whitestar class and do a video if you havent yet.
@Mr_LH1980

Some things are wrong. There are no shields in B5. The Sharlin cruisers are actually quite weak armour wise. The main advantage they had over Earthforce was the scanning fields. The scanning field was so strong it jammed targeting systems of enemies. Meaning the Earth force cruisers couldn't lock onto them and had to use manual eyeball targeting. It's hard enough to use ironsights on earth with a rifle it's even harder in space. So Earth force ramming attacks destroyed them. Star Furies could also shoot out the bridge as seen (attempted) during the battle of the line just before Sheridan gets captured. IIRC it's supposed to be powered like Romulan ships powered by a blackhole

Yeah, there's never been any canon confirmation, but singularity generator for main power does seem to be one of the more reasonable theories, particularly in how it would influence their use of gravitic technologies.

Ah, I see confusion. Five cubic km = 1.71km per side, whereas 5km per side would be 125 cubic km. The 3 km I stated (27 cubic kilometers) is as per Memory Alpha. That said, I don't see anything resembling that quote in "Q Who". Perhaps it was a later borg episode?

If memory serves the Minbari use a form of advanced reactionless Gravity Drive, which is what the aft tail Manits shape is. The offshoot of that is that they can generate an internal gravity system so they are one of the few races that actually has internal gravity aboard their ships

Other than weapons, electronic countermeasures and speed the jump engines of the Minbari are super precise. Earth ships can open a jump point roughly in the area they want while Minbari can open them so precise they can directly strike after exiting hyperspace.

All the long antennas are weapons, the smaller ones are anti fighter/point defence, the also have a gimble system on the tips that allow them to fire of centre. The oval shaped parts such as the big bt at the back and the 4 smaller ones are the gravitic field engines. (the white stars have 2 massive ones at the back) Minbari use crystals to construct there ships and buildings so they are kind of organic but not living, applying energy to damaged crystal can make it re-grow to repair its self. And the big head aliens you are thinking off are the Vorlon.

Great episode! I was watching Babylon 5 the other day thinking you should do the Minbari cruiser. I wonder if the person who designed it had a pet Angel fish or saw a sun fish once. Quick note Babylon 5 universe doesn't have shields. Only the the aliens from thirdspace had shields. Excalibur was close with diamond plating that deflected 80% of weapons fire energy.

the reason for no engines is the large fin in back uses gravity for movement not thrust, the four prongs in front center are tractor beams (you see them used in the show) around the main hanger bay, the hull is a crystalline material (there are references in the show), most of their cities are also built from crystals, the have learned to build things from crystals

If you do a re-watch, you want the digital version from WB, AmazonPrime, or some other digital source. You do not want to watch the DVDs, because they messed up the rendering of the series for public sales. B5 was shot in widescreen, then the live actions were cropped to standard 4:3 aspect ratio. The CG animation was rendered in 4:3 aspect ratio. With the DVD, they cropped the 4:3 aspect ratio to widescreen 16:9, which cuts out some significant scenes. There were episodes, where character's heads were cut off at the forehead.

The fins on the sides of the main fin at the back are guns as well as the fins of the side of the ship. The big deflector-like device at the top of the ship is a gun. The majority antennas are guns with the exception of the smallest protrusion on the fin guns and the main forward gun. The pointy area opposite the antennas on the fin-guns also are weapons. The ship uses inertia-less propulsion (gravimetric/gravitetic propulsion) The ship carries 15 fighters along with shuttles. There are varying sizes of the same design for this vessel as small as 300m - about a mile long. The ship has no shields, relying solely on stealth & probably sensor jamming. The ship is not organic.

Minbari construct the base ship much like other races but the outer hull is an advanced organic armor. Excalibur was set to receive an organic armor as well but was pressed into service to deal with the Drahk plague.

Yes, you need to do a B5 fleetwatch! :) Thanks so much for covering B5 ships. I look forward to your coverage of the Narn battleship, which is a personal favorite. - Minbari ships involve organic technology. I don't think that the ships are sentient, but I could be mistaken. - There is a hint in the First Season of the show that the Minbari as a species might have some connection to the sea. However, they are not sea creatures in their current stage of evolution, and live on land.

On the note of stealth tech....now that I know the scale of B5 ships....I don't see how the Earth ships couldn't just manually target those huge ships....even with the stealth tech. :)
@Ishlacorrin
@Ishlacorrin 6 лет назад
A lot of races in B5 did have some form of shielding tech but most of it was not very effective, the Centauri had it on their Primus Class but it was easy to overwhelm with fighter fire so it didn't do much. The Vorlons were said to also have shielding tech but the only fighter you ever see them in is vs the Shadows or the First Ones and thus the weapons are so strong the shielding doesn't appear to do anything.

In B5 there are ships that are living, but the Minbari do have ships that are almost living. Like the Whitestar has an adaptive AI and organic hull. Each ship built are the same when it comes out of drydock, but over time they become their own unique ship.

The Minbari don't use Organic tech (outside the Whitestar), mostly crystal actually, BUT as proteges of the Vorlons, who DO use organic tech (and who's ships look like squids now that I think of it) they might have taken some design cues from them. The big fins are a consistent design across their ships and seem to be for the gravitational engines.
@draxiss1577

To clarify your statement around 13:30, they cannot go directly to hyperspace. They still need to form a jump *point*, but they don't need a jump *gate* to form the point for them. Also, they use some sort of propellant-less drive as their means of propulsion. The Sharlin-class cruiser does NOT use organic tech; their hulls are made out of some super-resilient crystalline material. The Minbari have a thing for crystals in the show. There are almost no proper shields like you see in Star Trek. In the show, the only vessels I can recall that used shields utilized Vorlon technology. (I know some people have claimed the Centauri had shields, but I didn't see any.) The Shadows didn't really have external shields, although I think they utilized internal force fields 'n stuff. B5 had a very interesting mix of realism and space-fantasy elements.

Babylon 5 is nothing less than a masterpiece of storytelling. There are indeed a few shaky performances in S1, but Trek fans should be able to deal with that having experienced the opening seasons of TNG/DS9/VOY. Luckily it doesn't detract too much from setting the scene for a universe shaped by the decisions of its characters. Half a sentence uttered in an early season may have devastating consequences years later. Every subsequent rewatch allows you to unveil more and more intricacies in all their terrible inevitability. It makes you look forward to the next rewatch, even though you know how much it's going to hurt again. You may also never be able to feel safe with someone asking "Who are you?" or "What do you want?" in the future. It really is that good. Thanks JMS!

Another B5 ship on Fleetyards, and the original model!? Fantastic work. Most of the other comments have covered what everything is but yes, this ship is imposing. Look at any battle from the Earth Minbari War (2245-2248) especially the Battle of the Line. This ship would strike fear in to any human that encountered it! It still imposes 10 years later during the show. I would love to see your reactions to B5. It's an amazing show and to those who say it's a Star Trek rip off, you need to check the history and realise it's more like the other way around ;)

as people have said, the back fin is the gravity propulsion. in at least 1 episode, someone damaged the back fin in order to disable one of these ships. all the pointy parts in the back are also weapons. when i first found out the dimensions of b5 main capital ships, i thought the scale was to big fr the crew they have. i think the designers just threw out some numbers. i heard that different official sources also give different values, so probably don't take them too seriously. but i think the designers did a really good job at making diverse styles of ships in the b5 universe.

Ok. At 21:14 you have the 4 small Manta Rays and two of them are attached to the large manta ray on the rear. This thing must have the ability to separate into 5 ships. The Main hull, Large manta , and the four small manta rays ones. Very Very neat ship.

No shields in b5 (the most they have is interceptor gun points that shoot at incomming projectiles and misses) the Mumbai do seem to employ organic Hull to their ships but nothing like the White Star Later on in the series the whitestars have vorlon tech(it's biological ship with regeneration capabilities from high damage as long as the main engine core is running) the white stars have learning shields but the ship Has to have taken a hit previously on the Hull and survive it for it to learn from it (same with volan ships as well) Most of those ships also uses some sort of gravity proportion that's what those 1 big + 2 smaller things next to it that are sticking out the back of the ship that is its actual engines that pushes the ship around as well as the hyperspace generator thingy ( I forgot if that's what it's called
