Colonialism's Impact on Africa

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The journalist says colonialism was “short enough to destroy leadership in Africa but not long enough to replace it with anything else.”
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Richard Dowden:
Richard Dowden is Executive Director of the Royal African Society in London (www.royalafricansociety.org).
Richard worked for the Times until 1986 when he became Africa Editor of the Independent and in 1995 took the post of Africa Editor at The Economist. He also made three television documentaries for the BBC and Channel 4 on Africa.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TRANSCRIPT:
Question: What must Africa rediscover from its pre-colonial period?
Richard Dowden: I think the colonial impact was twofold.
One was the creation of those states; 53 states created out of 6,000; created by foreigners. Africans had no part in that creation.
But the other factor, and this is a delicate one and I tread carefully here, is the destruction of belief in Africa, the lack of self-confidence, the feeling that we can do it. And, I think, that was also a result of the colonial impact because, I think, it was short enough to destroy leadership in Africa. But not long enough to replace it with anything else.
So the old ways, the old political systems were just wiped out by the colonial impact. And with that, any form of political or cultural leadership was obliterated. And it is that loss of self-confidence, which, I think, was the other thing. I think France Fenon wrote a lot about this.
People will say to you in Africa, sometimes, “I trust you because you’re white.” And it’s that sort of thing. It’s changing. It’s definitely changing. But I think that was the other devastating impact which we, as outsiders, do not see, that loss of self-confidence. And it takes time. It takes generations to restore that pride in Africa.
And one of the people who’s been very strong on this is Chinua Achebe, the Nigerian novelist. And he went back recently, and I had the privilege of accompanying him on his return, to Nigeria for only the 2nd time in 20 years. And he said to them, “In your own cultures, you will find the values and the strength that will take you into the future. In your own cultures.” And that restoration of self-belief, I think, is critical.
Question: What are the signs that Africa is progressing?
Richard Dowden: China is number one. Number two is mobile phones and the Internet. Everybody knows the usual impact of that… It hasn’t changed all our lives. But in Africa, it has made a huge difference. I’ll give you some examples.
One, market women, sitting in a market, just with a few oranges, bananas, tomatoes, will be phoning the next market to check the price there. So you get a real economic impact. There’s a glut so okay, we don’t go there, we’ll go there. One of the best examples of… a Somali… was a Somali nomad with his herd of goats and cattle, waiting to go… come down out of the mountains, to the port to sell his animals. But he checks the price on a mobile phone on the other side of the Red Sea. Unbelievable. He borrows a mobile phone and he’s got… And he calls out the trader on the other side, what’s the price ‘cause I need to know what’s the best time to come out of the mountains. All sorts of things like that.
But politically too, watching elections in Ghana and radio stations saying, if you see anything dodgy going on, if you see ballots stuffing or anything like that, call us. And suddenly, the radio stations are broadcasting people on mobile phones, telling them what’s going on in an election. Immediate.
If the elections are announced locally, everybody in the country knows what they are. They can’t fix them between the local and the national. All sorts of ways; these are transforming Africa.
But the third way is the professional middle class, which is growing very fast in Africa, with its huge thirst for education. And in particular, those who’ve gone abroad, now returning to Africa. And I think the creation of that professional middle class that do things according to international standards, not to the way we do things in Nigeria, or the way we do things in Kenya, but this is the way we do things internationally, that, I think, will have a huge impact as well.

You are totally right but what you didn't mention is the aftermath of colonialism in Africa, the real impact of colonization after the colonizers left. Apart from forcefully taken of resources in Africa, the killing e.t.c all these things we can say they happened in the dark ages and we are not blaming it on the current generation of Europeans but the only single act the colonizer did that cannot be forgotten is the creation of states, joining people that are not the same together and we are still suffering it up till today. This particular act perpetrated by the colonizer is the genesis of Africa doom, and this gave rise to civil war, poverty across Africa continent; unfortunately, not many people know this in Africa. Europeans merged different ethnics group together to form a country this led to fighting for leadership among these groups and of course civil war, corruption and poverty.

Michael Oluwalana what you say is true to a degree. There’s a case study that due to an identity crisis in Africa, the result of mixing cultures and forcing cultures upon others, creates an environment of segregation but only those who were present at that time are not capable of accepting change. Look at London for example. No two people come from the same cultural background these days yet there is to a certain degree, harmony. Africans need to come to terms with this post colonial identity and accept the new world. As long as we reject it there will be no hope. The mixed cultures and ethnicities need to accept that they are now part of one nation. Cohesion is necessary for the success of Africa. In Zimbabwe, where I am from, It is my hopes that the younger generation born post colonialism realise that they are part of a mixed nation and start rebuilding the country to what it is capable of.

We have to rise, search, learn and explore for ourselves and then teach such to decolonize ourselves. And the wave of emancipation is building up. Robert- Bobby Onyoni yes national identity is created by the narrative, but it is up to the people in power to preach a peaceful narrative of nationhood. Most African countries are hybrids yet the government preach only of their own past narratives, an identity that only the black population can relate to, this means that the whites will cling to their colonial identity as that is all they have. This creates segregation and like I said, there will never be peace and prosperity if that is the case.

I don't put as much focus on colonialism. I see Africa's post colonial stagnation as being related to Africa's new leaders choosing bad development models. Too many new leaders went with dictatorial politics and state controlled economies. Africans need to be allowed to sort out how democracy should look in their particular countries. Africans need to sort out how market economics should work in their countries. Then we will see more progress on the continent.

Wrong. Jsut as the guy stated at the beginning. EUROPE decided the borders of each country which creates huge issues in the Africa. One country as many diffrent tribes languages in people. For example in Nigeria there are 5 Main different ethnic groups YOROBA IGBO HAUSA EDO FULANI. YOU tell me how ONE of these people are suppsoed to represent all 5 tribes fairly when they speak diffrent languages and don't share the same beliefs. It's Europe's fault for creating this mess. Why should a shona person be leader of a country where the second biggest ethnic group is Ndebele in zimbabwe.. It's causes tension and power grabbing everyday.. Plus even after ppl left the economy was still controlled by Europe. Most of the land still belonged to white people there for black people can't propsepr. As in colonial era black people couldn't raise through the ranks. Good education was reserved for the whites or the minority of blacks who barely managed to get up there. Europe is responsible for post colonial countries as all the leaders grew up in the colonial era so are a direct product of it.

For once, I have to agree with the left on this. Afrikab failure ultimately is the result of centuries of being humiliated, enslaved, colonized and demeaned by Europeans. Whitey-white imperialism-is to blame. The European carveup of Afrika prevented native societies from developing naturally into or towards modern nation states. The Europeans stole their futures, for ever. The same thing has happened in many states across the world, including Pakistan and India in my opinion. The worst thing that the European colonialists did was not the shooting and machine-gunning, the plundering, the forced labour or the rest of the economic and physical abuse. It was simply that they destroyed the self-confidence of the peoples they subjugated so easily and for so long. That problem remains. To this day, many people from long-colonized states privately despise their own societies and take no pride even in their early history. There is nothing to rally round. A defeatist ‘why bother’ attitude is handed down the generations. Dependency and apathy become culturally ingrained. And no society suffers more from it than Afrikansociety, in both Afrika and the Caribbean, because Afrika’s colonial experience was by far the worst. By the same token, the ancient, mostly independent, homogenous states of East Asia have flourished, driven by a proud nationalism that is completely lacking in most of the euro-colonized countries. They believe in themselves. Afrikan people, and many other victim peoples of imperialism, don't

I absolutely agree with this post. I think even some European countries that were under the umbrella of big European empires to this day suffer from self confidence and how to be self efficient. Even "communism" killed them completely in that regard. I think those big empires are still reaping the reward of centuries of humiliating those client states. I think the best way for African nations and indeed some Asian nations is , to cut off ties COMPLETELY with the so called western countries. A radical move, granted, that perhaps will follow with years of hardship and the costs of many lives, but at least they will pass away with dignity, until these so called western powers are hit so hard that they have no choice by they play the game fairly, even in economical level. They are still playing dirty in every level, even though they "gave" these countries under much difficulty their independence. To think that Angola had their independence at 1975 and they were plunged into civil war for another 30 years and they have the guts to blame these African countries for not being able to self govern? Are you kidding me? A bad joke indeed.

When the Romans colonised Britain they destroyed our way of life and our ancient customs and religions, but they also did much good too. When Europeans colonised much of Africa it was still living in the stone age. Many Africans had very hard lives, often with little to eat and no personal security as they could be captured by another tribe and sold into slavery at any moment. Colonialism for all its faults, gave them that security, along with well paid employment and a full stomach, as their countries were transformed into modern, efficient economies. When the colonialist left, many returned to the stone age as they were taken over by Marxist thugs like Mugabwe. Now they have returned to poverty, lack of food and medical assistance, and their life span is now reduced. Many of these people now look back to Colonialism as their golden age. N reality, It's the duty of an advanced society to spread that advancement to others, and not to deny those less fortunate a far better and longer life.

The Matabele tribe literally only arrived there 500 years ago. Some were also enslaved by the Portuguese in around 1200 for gold mining but more were killed by tribalism than by the whites. The British did take advantage of them for their land and minerals but it was actually all bought in a deal with the Matabele chief, lobengula. GB also lost huge amounts of money due to urbanisation in Zimbabwe as they actually only planned to create rural infrastructure there for farming and small amounts of mining.

@Reptilezionofaramouru adre ...No, British imperialism in Africa and India was, on the whole, very good for, especially, the ordinary people of Africa and India. Likening what the British achieved in Africa to what Hitler did in the lands his forces overran is malicious nonsense! No, the Persians did NOT introduce the idea of individual rights, elected parliaments, independent judiciaries, modern Western science, etc. It was NOT as benevolent as British rule. (In any event, the Mughals weren't Persians but Turkic people who emulated the Persians.) Mughal rule certainly did not lead to the transformation of the lives of ordinary Indians. The introduction of Western science, law, political constitutionalism did -- even if the majority of Indians didn't truly feel it until Rao's premiership in the 1990s. Your comment about Hong Kong makes no sense. Do you think the Hong Kong Chinese were always wealthy? WHEN did they become wealthy? What came FIRST, the freedom or the "riches"? Yes of course we had slavery but dont you think it's getting a bit boring now with the constant reminder that black peoples ancestors are slaves. The longer people keep bringing this up there will always be a problem. We need to just move on. People are forgetting it was black people selling the slaves to the whites. Slavery has always been apart of human history from the jews in Egypt to the africans in Arabia. Slavery will always exist. Pre-colonial kingdoms of west Africa such as the Dahomey and Benin peoples also had forms of wheeled transport.Africans DID know how to make the wheel, it just wasn’t as wide-spread as it was on the Eurasian continent. Mostly because of the size, lack of reliable beasts of burden in certain areas and overall unreliability in areas with the tsetse fly or heavy vegetation. The wheel was also used in kitchen Two story building also existed in that part of Africa. In burkina in the 10 or 11th century and it still exists. we also know how to conserve food naturally or create a natural fridge without pollution. Thus inventing fridge before you.
