Colony in Space | Doctor Who Marathon From The Beginning | Pertwee FINALLY Goes To Another World! 

Unfortunately, for me, this is one of the most boring stories Who has ever produced.

A very interesting review Chris. You make some excellent points which I will think about when I next watch this story.. Unfortunately my thoughts are very much coloured by my first watch of this as a 9 year old. And that colour is grey. Grey, grey and more grey. For his first trip off Earth I wanted spectacle, sparkle, silver and monsters. I did enjoy the rare bit of behind the scenes filming we got when Jon Pertwee was ambushed by Eamonn Andrews for This is Your Life. For me it’s a story that takes a long time to go nowhere. and that has rarely changed over the years. I love the look of the Alien Priest and it’s always fun to see a pre Gail Helen Worth. And the mud fight. The appearance of the Master was a shot in the arm and I’ve always liked the use made of Adjudicators in later novels and audios. There's nothing wrong with the guest cast but. It would have been interesting if Susan Jameson has been cast as Morgan. There's nothing particularly wrong with the script but this is my least favourite Malcolm Hulke script. In fact this story beats Claws of Axos as my least favourite Pertwee to date because it’s so grey and dull.

See I don't mind the Master name-dropping - by the time he does show up we've forgotten about him again so we don't expect him. Hulke is just great isn't he, he's interested in ethics and morals and ordinary people just trying to survive, and so we get a story that's actually about material social conditions; rather than just redoing the Troughton years, Huke demonstrates what the old format can do and in doing so, provides a new way forward for the programme.

I'm of the opinion that this one works best when you watch it as part of a marathon, or at least when watching the Pertwee era in sequence, as its refreshing to break up the UNIT format... i first watched this as an omnibus on UK Gold and it didnt grab me at all... but with repeated viewing, watching in order, and with the benefit of age, I see so much in this that is wonderful! I do always chuckle though when Gail Tilsley says "Jim'll Fix It" 🤦‍♂️🤣

There's a lot to like about Colony in Space. Sadly, however, it's one of those Pertwee six-parters that really only needed to be four. Which causes it to lose a lot of steam in the later episodes and makes it less enjoyable than it could have been.

Malcolm Hulke always wrote stories with interesting moral and political nuance. What I like about Colony in Space is that the farmers aren’t just being exploited by a faceless corporation or government; he’s got them butting heads with miners, another very working class industry. This is as much about hardworking people fighting for survival and resources as it is about corporate greed.

Helen Worth has just announced she is leaving Coronation Street after 50 years. Wonder if RTD is tempted to cast her in a sequel to Colony now? 😂

This one is really good, but I do feel like the Doomsday weapon stuff feels pretty divorced from the main plot. Malcom Hulke is excellent though and for a first Space story for Pertwee this works really well.

Sorry for falling a bit behind. This is probably my favourite Master story I love him pretending to be the authority figure to put The Doctor on the back foot. By this point this era can't really do any wrong for me.

When I first experienced "Colony in Space" on American PBS in 1987,....it was boring as anything!! this was edited into a movie of like 2:15 time. I was a teen, it was Saturday night, and I didn't go out much -I was a quiet Geek. Years later, on VHS, episode,...Oh right, this has some quality, and message! I had more fun with "axis" and "Demons", yet, "Colony" has its merit, message.

I am watching Doctor Who ( Up to The Giggle), Scooby-Doo (up to Scooby-Doo and Guess who), Spongebob (up to season 13). I have a bit of a liking on Sci-fi, mystery and comedy at the same time. Wish me luck (:

Sorry, but Colony vies with The Mutants for the worst Pertwee for me. Six dull episodes of politics, enlivened too late by Delgado. I actually loved the novelisation as a kid which talks in detail about the state of the Earth (mile high buildings in a ashen slag heap of a planet) and was so disappointed when I saw the serial years later. You said Terror of the Autons was ugly, but my God... Definitely the worst of this season.
