In this video, I'll answer the question of what the effect of color filters in native black-and-white photography is. I explore the impact of red, orange, and yellow filters. You'll find out which filter helps to increase the contrast between clouds and the sky, which filter to use for portraits, and if there is a filter for everyday use. I'll even show what happens when using color filters on a color camera set to black and white.

FF-you should try a green filter on your Monochrome for portraits. It might surprise you. Thanks again for your inspirational videos.

I'm sorry. I said I wouldn't ever buy a Monochrom because I thought I could get similar results with my M10. Well, I caught the bug from watching your video and others. I got a used M10 Monochrom today and I've been running down the battery to see what the camera can do. So far, I'm really blown away. The noise really does look like film grain and makes for a nice creative effect. The M10 Monochrom design is a substantial update from the M10 also. I've got some color filters coming in the mail. What a great camera! I'm very happy with it.

The problem, or the advantage is that noise does not really show up before 12500 ISO ;o)

I have the m10m and I have the ir72 red filter, orange filter and the yellow. Unless I’m shooting for IR, I mostly have the orange filter on the lens as I like the effect it has on the wife.

@@flofroschmayer yes and by the way it does not "reduce imperfection", it cannot do that it just lightens the skin tones and slightly reduces the contrast on sky which make the imperfections slightly less visible but does not quite reduce them ;o)

I started off with a red filter during a recent trip in the mountains. I was using my film Nikon during that trip and even with a relatively flat film stock I was able to get stunning contrast out from the negatives. What an eye opener. I did the exact same test as yours with my two different digital cameras, the results were very different, but equally disappointing lol. Right before RU-vid showed me your video I ordered an orange filter for my Leica, can’t wait to try it out!

Excellent comparison of the 3 main colour filters. In the days of film only I always used them for B&W film. Today I when I purchased my Q2M I immediately reached for my old filters but for my type of photography (Street, buildings City Scape) for mono I always have my Orange filter best compromise between the 3. Now have the M11M instead but my lenses shared with my M11 but filters are always in my bag when I go out with the M11M just not perm fitted to the lens.

Never tried it... I guess if you stack color filters, the order will have an impact. Let's say blue and yellow should turn into green, right? Then, you should have the green filter effect. I might try this out sometime soon.
@HaakonOdinsson
@HaakonOdinsson 6 дней назад
Surely stacking that any filters and that amount would affect the quality of the picture taken?
@BrunoChalifour
@BrunoChalifour 11 месяцев назад
Interesting video. I liked when you had the images taken without filter and with 3 different filters on the same screen/image so that we could stop and compare. Now two precisions : 1-if going from a Y to R via Or increases contrast, the effect of these filters is a little subtler : a given colored filter will let the light of the same color go through, and as a result lighten those details and block off the opposite color (make everything of the opposite color darker and anything of a slightly different color slightly a darker gray). So, for instance a Yellow filter will lighten everything vegetal because it has a lot of yellow, green will to that too but to a lesser extent (so green can be useful in landscape photography as well as yellow. I used to have one most of the time rather than a useless (in normal conditions) UV filter.By the way there are different densities of yellow to choose from. With film a yellow even light yellow filter was very useful as BW film is more sensitive to blue light than the human eye (as a result the clouds have a tendency to "disappear" it was even worse in the 19th century when the materials were extremely sensitive to blue light (and not so much to red). As a consequence the skies were blank/empty/white and had to be added in the darkroom far before Photoshop ;o) 2- a"chip" is colloquial for micro-processor, not sensor. What you mean is sensor. By the way converting a color image into BW is best done on a computer with an image-processing software that allows you to play with the sliders for different colors. It is far more precise and creative in terms of BW rendition than any other ways as it allows you to combine and control the effects of several filters at the same time. I often use Photoshop or Lightroom and lightens the yellows in my landscape photography while darken the blues and cyans and working on the reds at the same time. Best,
@flofroschmayer
@flofroschmayer 11 месяцев назад
Thank you for clarifying... I was not aware that they are different densities in the color filters... but makes sense of course... I thought about mentioning your point about the color sliders in LR or PS in the video, but I decided I want it to be about the monochrom camera... I used the sliders that in the past, but I actually never thought about why for example the yellow slider reacts in a certain way... not until I made this video ;-) / And yes... chip, sensor, card... english is - as anyone can hear - not my first language.

@flofroschmayer

Sure you can process your work in Lightroom… but you can only work with what you got… color filters can help to get you information you would not get without the filters.
@stewartlogie
@stewartlogie Год назад
These filters also reduce the amount of light available to the sensor, negating to some degree the sensitivity advantage of a monochrome sensor over the typical color one. If you always use such a filter you might as well use a color camera and convert to black and white, where you can adjust the relative amounts of the colors after the fact and have the freedom that affords.
@flofroschmayer
@flofroschmayer Год назад
I understand your point. Sure. I like the process of planning and knowing what I am doing when taking the photo… and do as less post as possible… the main reason why the Monochrom interested me. I decide before shooting that it is going to be black and white… Somewhat still fascinated by not having all freedoms afterwards ;-)
@BrunoChalifour
@BrunoChalifour 11 месяцев назад
Yes and not quite. Using a light Y filter works and is far less detrimental to the light reaching the sensor than the B and R filters of the Bayer array.
@tripswithgriff
@tripswithgriff 2 месяца назад
With a B&W sensor camera you CANT adjust the 'relative amounts of colours after the fact', as you suggest, because there is NO colour data captured! Thats the whole point. You can adjust the tones only but if you have a B&W sensor you need to adjust the contrast when taking the shot. Its totally different to the results when converting a colour file to B&W in post processing.
