I talk about photography, movie-making, and storytelling in general! I am a constantly curious, creative storyteller. I love tech, gear, and everything that helps me tell stories. My primary focus is on Leica and Apple, but am also exploring other brands.
I love sharing experiences. That's why I came here, to share my 30-plus years of experience in storytelling in every way possible. I try to make videos about things I have not been able to find videos about or approach subjects and themes from a different angle.
In real life, I am an international working fiction tv- and film director, writer, and photographer. I worked in Germany, the US, Mexico, China, the Czech Republic, Portugal, the Netherlands, Italy, Austria, and my country of origin, Switzerland.

Loving your videos - unfortunately until they make the looks useable after the capture and changeable between each they’re pretty useless for anyone other than someone who goes I only wanna take mono HC jpegs etc and if that’s the case why did you spend 6k on a camera that produces 60mgp DNG’s 😂
I think there is a deep conversation to be had regarding our relationship with objects, especially those we use as some form of tools. For me, my cameras and my motorcycles inspire those feelings. I think part of it has to do with the shared adventure; the memories you generate. I also think there is an appreciation of the human skill and intelligence behind the objects, for instance the incredible level of technical and even artistic design that underpins these modern tools, as well as the sense of the human touch in the manufacturing process. Humans are about tools and ingenuity, which likely account for our survival thus far. Our tools are precious to us, and we feel an affinity with them. I have owned many cameras over the years, and I completely understand and agree that the M cameras in particular inspire this personal connection (even without the family background as in your case).
I have been a Leica shooter for over two decades. Two years ago I sold my M8 and M9 after finding an almost new M-P typ 240. After a few weeks of using it I realized I was in love. I will never sell it.
Wow, they're beauties. Just a little curious, how much was it to do it? Personally, I will not sell my M6. It's my first Leica and only, but what is special to me is that it has my birthday written in the serial number. Which I kinda brag a little each time I show it to people lol.
Soon Chinese, and Korean companies will dominate the photo and electronic market. stubborn Germans make good things, but not completely what most people want. Ergonomics is bad. Apple is in a dominant position, but others are challenging its domination, and stubborn Apple losing its world shares. nowadays most people want both photo and video cameras. Making only for photography you will not be able to make money. Asians, especially Chinese companies can produce any number of goods, but the Japanese, and Germans after sold out can't produce more to the demands.
Thanks a lot for this review. I've just ordered one Q3 and exoecting its delivery. Can I ask the refernce and diameter of the B+W black mist filter ? thanks so much.
Not sure if I understand the excitement of putting your signature on something you really love but I’m glad it makes you happy. I’ve had many camera bodies over the last 21 years but none have excited me except the Nikon ZF. Give it another year let’s see how I feel about it. But lenses that’s another story!
The only customization I have on my Q3 is the black Leica punkt instead of the red one. It looks a bit of stealth mode right now. I’d love to have my logo or signature engraved on the body, but not that BIG! Do you think they have an option for a tiny engraving instead?
Yes. You need to create an eps file. When you order the engraving, you get a document with the area marked that can be used for the engraving. Best make an excample. They also email you. I think you can explain it exactly how you want it.
WOW, I thought it was just me, I too love holding my Leica's, it's hard to describe but it feels so right in your hands. Having your camera's engraved is the coolest thing I've seen in a long time. Congrat's. Thanks for sharing and enjoy.
The way I see loving an object is that the object itself gives you joy either by looking at it using it holding it feeling it if it gives you joy then you must love it. If someone’s wife or husband or job does not give them joy, do they love them?
Ja... schade dass die Schweiz raus is ;-) Genau. In Wetzlar über den Kundenservice. leica-camera.com/de-DE/service-support/services/leica-individualisation Ich denke PDF und JPG geht... am besten ist ein eps file. Einfach hinschreiben. Die sind wahnsinnig nett und helfen.
What can I add to the SL3 cage to protect my lens that I attach to the camera? Is there a way to support the camera and lens so the camera will not tip over when placing it on a table??
I recommend adding a baseplate with a dual 15mm road Clamp and some Stainless Steel Rods. This will prevent the setup from tilting frontwise and damaging the lens. There should even be rod clamps to fix the lens further. You can also add a Matte Box. It looks cool, but of course, it gets a bit bulkier. The other thing you could do is attach the lens hood, and then the lens weight will most likely be on the lens hood when you put the camera down.
Why the more expensive Black Mamba doesn't have a NATO rail por grips that the cheaper one (Classic) does? NATO is much more secure than Arri connectors. I can't understand Smallrig. I'll go for the Classic.
I tried both as well, I wound up keeping the Black Mamba cage for my video centric rig, but I got a different Neewer cage for my more photos focused rig. The was less expensive, but gave better access to the mode wheel.
Thank you for the quality of your comments. I have a question: how does zone focusing work on a Leica Q3? Is it really reliable? And how do you adjust the distance ring to focus on a distance of 3 metres? Thanks in advance for the answers. All the best. Eric Guillaume
@@flofroschmayer Thanks for your reply. All that's left is to take measurements with a rangefinder. It's just a shame that Leica didn't indicate, as they do on their M SUMMICRON series lenses for example, the distances of 3 and 7 metres, 3 metres being a distance often used in street photography. What's more, their depth-of-field scale is generally inaccurate. Shame, shame for a camera of this quality and I was going to say at this price.
As the old military saying goes...."no plan survives 1st contact with the enemy". Doesn't matter how good your plan is you need to be ready to change it and adapt to what you face.
I just sent you an email, but, can you tell me how I can add something to the bottom of the SL3 cage I just bought to keep the camera from tipping over when I set it down? There seems to be a place at the bottom front of the cage that something could be attached to stick out under the bottom of the attached lens to keep it from tipping over and thus protecting the lens from any possible damage. Thank you for your content. I am one of your subscribers and watch all of your videos. Thank you
@@flofroschmayer Can you tell me where and how I buy the base plate and rods that you are suggesting? I simply have no clue where and what to buy…..sorry but I am a newby
@@jonwalker3299 I assume you are in the US... So I would go with B&H (www.bhphotovideo.com) or Adorama (www.adorama.com); they have everything. You can also check out Amazon or, for Small Rig, directly on the Small Rig website.
This was a fantastic explanation of everything. I was very curious about how these work, and now I have a much better understanding. Having said that though, these sound absolutely terrible and I see nothing but disadvantages vs a mirrorless camera with phase detection autofocus and focus peaking. The only advantage I saw was being able to see things before they enter your composed shot. Everything else just seems ridiculously convoluted....You said it slowed you down, that makes a lot of sense. I don't see that as an advantage at all, but to each his own I guess.
Thanks for the wonderful video Florian. Can the Smallrig cage be dismantled to just a simple baseplate? Don't need the extra pieces at the sides and top. Only need the arca swiss plate at the bottom
M10 R is great... I would go with the 35mm Summilux FLE Version I. Perfect match with the M10R... or the 50mm Summilux... but I think to start the 35 is the best.
face detect AF works when you select only HDMI out w/o rec to sd card and for S-Log2(3), you can actually set color to Cine or Pro, set saturation to +12 or to max, and that will give you even better results than 709. I used S-Log3 on a6400 (same sensor) with color set to Cinema, saturation +12 and blacks all the way down to get amazing results (considering the price and format of the camera)
I'm planning to own my first Leica camera. Stay Curious is one of the best channel that simplify my decision making on buying the Q3. Thanks so much for your content, I'm looking forward to see more from you. 😄
"Bought and sold after 6 months..." That's called a rental fee. Try it out and sell at a slight loss. And then you know. And Leica lenses last 70+ years.
I love using my 90mm f/2 Summicron for street photography. I usually use it in a 21/35/90mm kit for my Leica M6 and M10 rangefinders. It is a great lens.
I was going to buy this lens but saw your photos and got put off😂. Not your fault but the optics - its really soft and not sharp at the focused area unlike the 75 noc. I also see chromatic aberrations (green fringing). I would prefer the APO SL 21 instead for this reason. AF also makes it much simpler to use with shallower DOF. Thanks for saving me some money.
