Alphonso, you provide such a tremendous public service by sharing not only your love of art, but the process of making it. From theory to the "technical stuff", you provide inspiration for those of us trying to learn - or even refresh - our skills. Short, sweet and to the point. I like your style! Well done. And thank you for helping me get back on track after many years away from what I love doing best.
@@alphonsodunn I have subscribed to your channel and with all the quality content in this channel i'm cursing myself for not finding this rich source of knowledge earlier. There is no doubt you are the best, selfless generous teacher i have ever came across. The way you explain and share your knowledge for free is phenomenal. I don't know whether you will have time to read this comment. God bless you. Love from India. I wish God create more generous souls like you Mr. Dunn. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Seeing this really made something in my head click , I've been searching forever for a decent color theory video that explains it in a way that I can comprehend , thank you!!
I've been trying to understand color for like four years and this is the only time I've ever been able to understand it. You are the best teacher on RU-vid.
I really appreciate how you started with an easy-to-understand explanation of how we perceive colors and light before tackling the color wheel. Thank you for this great lesson!
i have bought all your books and continue to watch your videos everyday. Thank you so so very much for taking your time out and sharing your knowledge so freely, so down to earth that we can overstand. Seriously you are appreciated man . THANK YOU
Thank you so much Alphonso i started to paint with watercolors this year and your color explanation and everything helped me so much to chose and understand when i didn't know anything at all..You are such a wonderful teacher and artist and above else human being God bless you for everything.
Wow, I have never had colour theory so clearly explained before. I will watch this again and take notes and make my own graphs from this information. Thank you so much Alphonso for preparing and teaching this. God bless you for taking the time for our sakes. You're the best! 😊
Thank you so much for not only this video, but every video you have or will have made. You explain things in a way that MAKES SENSE. You have beautiful skills, in both art, and teaching.
All I can say Alphonso is that YOU explain color theory the best out of all of them (and I have researched every video on the subject in YT that I can find). Your series on the Color Theory are in depth, accurate, and easy to grasp. THANK YOU!
i love how you explain the science behind it, and not just "this goes well like this, this compliments this, and that, and those". the explanation makes it easier to understand.
+Alphonso Dunn You always reply to comments. You are simply GREAT. Thanks for these treasures in form of your videos. We will cherish them, learn from them and create something beautiful just like you do. Thanks.
Your explanation of ultraviolet and infrared blew my mind. Never really thought about it like that, I just accepted those terms from school and daily usage without realizing it's relationship to the visible light spectrum.
Such a great video. I now have a better understanding as to why artists mix color the way they do. Never thought about the vibration of the the color !
Wow, that was absolutely the best color theory explanation I have ever heard. I hope part two comes! Thank you so much, Alfonso. You are a very gifted teacher
Thank you. You explain this so well. I'm actually working with gouache & dealing with the opacity, but you explain this so well, that I'm practicing with variations & it finally makes sense.
Thank you Alphonso. This detailed tutorial covers the colour wheel theory very well as it explains the warm and cool mixes of each primary colour and how they affect the painting's outcome.
I learned light and color theory back in high school in physics class, and now I am taking a color theory course in art history. Until now I was never able to understnad how colors work. I read books, watched videos, and even read children physics book to understand at least the basics, still with no improvement. I felt pretty hopeless about my color theory college course until I found your videos. Thank you so much!
Another great tutorial. I write in this, but I normally see all your videos. You are, not only a great teacher, you are also a great comunicator, and I think that is very important to learn. I have from now your books on my Amazon's wish list, despite my English is not very good, but I don't care. Thanks again for your work and how you show to us, Alphonso. Saludos from Spain!
I wanted to study art and I don't wish to hoard as much as paints possible and I believe I'll get to understand watercolour from the basic which is mixing and knowing the primaries or basics. I had a hard time finding instructions from net and than you for doing this. It means a lot to me and understanding the "beyond" of colour. I just wish that your books are available here in our country.
Excellent as always....I mean I knew colour theory but listening here made me more aware of the warmth or coolness of the reds, yellows and blues...and the results of the combinations... thanks
This is the heart of colour mixing get it right it will end a great amount of time and frustration will be save, i learnt the hard way when first started painting, great demo, tfs
I absolutely loved this video. It was so helpful because I was having trouble remembering which colors to mix to get an intense secondary. Seeing the spectrum chart and your explanation was just what I needed. Thank you so much.
Thanks for the great video on color theory. It is by far the best explanation I have seen! I feel I actually understand the subject far better than I ever have. You made this a great learning experience for me. Michael Musgraves
You are A WONDERFUL INSTRUCTOR!!! I know I probably cannot afford your drawing class, so I'm purchasing your drawing book Also, cannot imagine the minds of the 9 negative commenters??? I guess the thousands against them which are positive - SAYS IT ALL!
Dear Alphonso, Thank you so much for teaching us this! This video is wonderful, and you are a wonderful teacher! I never quite understood color theory, and I've been wanting to learn for as long as I can remember! I even went to school for cosmetology, and we spent weeks on color theory...I just learned more in 20 minutes! Thank you so much! Again, I couldn't be happier that I found you; I'm so grateful
Thank you for this video! I've always been intimidated by paints and color, but listening to your explanation on color theory has me itching to give it another try!
Excellent lesson about color theory. You are very good at teaching, as you explain in a simple way. I learned about color theory years ago, and I thought I wouldn't learn more about it by watching this video, but since I have liked your other videos I gave it a try. In fact I learned quite a lot, specially about mixing :) thank you!
ho thanks a lot for this theoric lesson!!!! you give me a lot of pen trick and now some water color trick , thanks to you i become a drawer/painter . i didn' think that i can draw few month ago.
Fantastic video. I kinda knew this but was always a little confusing. You mad it all so perfectly clear. You teach so well. Thank you for sharing your talent with us.
This was a really in depth but well explained color theory video. Color theory was always more abstract to me. Now I will be putting your explanations to work☺
Your video is so informative! I am just starting to learn watercolor painting and your video has helped me tremendously. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and wonderful work 🙏❤️
I've always wondered why when mixing the primary colours you get black instead of white. It just seemed so counter intuitive. One reason I've heard was that you have colours from light and then earthly colours. And after this video I finally seem to grasp that the difference is between emitting light and absorbing light. Thank you, Alphonso
Yup, colored light and colored pigments behave differently. Colored light gets lighter as they combine towards white and color pigments combine and get much deeper towards black
Thanks, color theory, the basic that one must really wrap their mind around in order to progress. I have learned a great deal from your videos, the ones on gesture drawing and anatomy where especially helpful in the beginning. Have you considered having a patron site, giving more in-depth tutorials and demos? I would most definitely participate.
I recommend reading Urban Watercolor Sketching by Felix Scheinberger , really helped me out understand how to paint in watercolors and basic color theory. It was very helpful to watch this video after reading that book .
Mr Alphonse i don t mean to scare but god...you are the BEST!!! i ve been struggling so hard with this color theory thing and i ve just followed your tips instantly after watching this video, it s not a work of art but it s definitely better than before so if you intended to help artist i can assure you, mission acomplished thanks!!!! ps: you are awesome
i like the way you explained the color mixing... I have actually sat down and mixed colors... a lot of the time I have gotten mud :( sometimes I am surprised at how nice the color turns out. This goes to my fav. video so I can reference it ! thank you so much.
Alphonso: Will you touch on texture please? how do you know with any medium what to look for or feel on the paper or canvas .. how to fill in or layer. The reason I am asking is I love drawing and there isn't tons of texture to the touch. Move to painting and using inks there is a texture.I have tried to fill in and not sure things should always be so smooth? . Thank you :) always.
This is so helpful! Thank you for posting it. I was sorry to hear that you had a loss in your family. I lost my brother last year, so I understand how it can turn the world upside-down.
Great video! I'd love to see one where you explain how to combine pen&ink with watercolor... which pen lines should be left out, whether texture should be done with the pen, or watercolor, or both.. etc!
thanks for your time and effort in preparing and explaining the usage and understanding in a more simple easier way the theory of color.....btw I find your videos very rewarding in guiding my direction of drawing
You have an amazing gift as an artist and an equal if not more extraordinary talent as a teacher, thank you so much. I'm ordering your book today, this pushed me over the edge, I must have it. =)
