This was really useful and informative. Do you think you could do one for coloured pencils?

This video is very helpful. 🙆 Thanks. I'll be referring to it often as it will help me with the shadows in my urban sketches. Shadows that are gray rather than just a darker blue, darker red etc were stumping me. I can practice some of these methods and get better. I figured some things out when it came to paper. For me when doing a sketch in water based marker hot press watercolor paper is an excellent choice. If I'm going to be practicing, experimenting, or doing quick studies I use student grade drawing paper instead of sketch paper because it's heavier and there's little to no bleed through or show through. For everything except alcohol marker and heavy wet mediums I use mix media paper. So: 💁 Canson's XL Drawing 💁 Canson's XL Mix Media 💁 Brand X's Hot Press Watercolor Paper I know you dislike the loud almost neonish blue of the mix media cover, but I actually like the loud green and blue. They make me feel like a kid again. What I don't like is the drawing book has natural white 🚽 paper instead of bright white like the mix media sketchbook has. I will stare at bright white paper 'til my eyes bleed if it means I get high contrast! It's ok since it's only for practice. I'm having to get used to it. I'm learning slowly but surely.

It is! I was wondering is this how people make their own colors
@zoehongteaches

@@jonathansanon157 Yes, when you understand color theory, you can create your own colors and palettes.

Thank you for this super helpful video! I'm a teen and mainly use markers for my illustrations. I'm obviously still learning how to properly use color theory so this video was amazing for me!

Seeing this makes me want to pick up my markers. Coloring has always been what I'm struggling with, and this video is SUPER HELPFUL to understand how markers work. Thank you thank you thank you!

Thank you so much for demonstrated color theory with markers. Professors never explained this skill to me in art college 33 years ago. Back then markers were only used for design mock-ups.

Thank you this video was really helpful I will defently try it. At 6:56 I think it is also helpful to take a picture of your colour and they greys and make it to grey with your phone filter so you can see everything in grey and which is the closes value. I find it personally easier since Idk the colours all to well.

@zoehongteaches
@zoehongteaches 6 лет назад
Value is the lightness or darkness of a color. Baby pink, banana yellow, sky blue are all "high value" or light colors. Navy, burgundy, forest green are all "low value" or dark colors. And then middle value or medium color are in between, like orange, grass green.

So for the yellow and purple example, isn’t it kinda like black and white? Where you put black over white, it changes drastically to black. And when you put white over black, it would most likely turn gray ( I think)
@zoehongteaches

Yes, most very dark and very light colors react this way.

As always, great video. By the way, have you tried zig realcolor brushes? (they're markers, not brushes lol)... I have those and I use them for art, not design, but I sometimes felt limited on the color range. I will be trying these new tips with them!

The brushpens? Yes, I have a set and I enjoy them. I have a video in which I use them, I think in my Perfectionism is Stupid playlist. I also use them for pure illustration, not design.

Thank you Zoe I learns so much again!! Is it better to buy markers individually for each color so that I can test out different brand and save money ?? 😮 I’m so hesitant to buy a pack of 24 (W&N) cuz it’s such a good deal in amazon tho..!

Great day! Wondering about the different brand markers. I need one that is completely no oder. Some pigments and alcohol marker do but are low oder. Could you please help me with this issue by sharing with those who have allergies. Sharpe is too strong. The touch brand I've seen just not sure. Would like to invest in something beyond Crayola. Thank you for sharing your videos I do enjoy the knowledge. Have a blessed day!

Hello! Thank you for your video! It really helped clear up some confusion I had about markers. I'm doing a commission of the Justice League. I'm using comic illustration board. How would I capture the shading I the costumes? Would it be like in your video above, where you would apply the corresponding gray followed by the original color on top?
