I got that feeling too..... Who in their right mind would put that shade of green--or really any shade of green in a bathroom? I had a radiation oncologist who had changing cubicles where you changed into a hospital gown. The cubicles were small, finished with mottled grey-green plastic laminate, there was a full length mirror you couldn't get away from, and an florescent down light about 3 feet over your head. Heidi Klum couldn't look good under these circumstances--let alone when you are sick!

My architecture mentor has a lot of sayings :)) one of them is: "there are colors for houses, there are colors for cars and there are colors for panties. For God's sake folks, don't mess them up!". So whatever the color trend is, the one that implies common sense and nature will never go out of style.

The Benjamin Moore pallet this year are very reminiscent of colors from my past and a period where I kinda went overboard in painting rooms in the house. The joy statement part also rings a bell as it also was a point when I was figuring out I had SAD and keep saying to the hubs ( who was supportive but slightly horrified) I can’t take all the grey - we need color!
@LisaHoltDesign
@LisaHoltDesign Год назад
Well you've got some great ones to work with now!
@ros8986
@ros8986 Год назад
regarding SAD - you might try out different K numbers in light bulbs - I found that lower K numbers (K2300, K2700) were making me very depressed and that K4000 to K5000 (which for me is a true white light) fixed that. I used to buy K4000 or K4500, but I am finding that the new inexpensive K5000 bulbs are fine (not too blue). The new inexpensive (at least in the US) K5000 bulbs are called "daylight" as opposed to "soft white" (but check the packaging - unfortunately K numbers are always printed in tiny mouse type).
@Jen39x
@Jen39x Год назад
@@ros8986 Interesting idea as I’ve been blaming all the white walls for being depressing in my condo. I should probably change light bulbs and see if that helps
@Hypatia52
@Hypatia52 Год назад
@@Jen39x At least it's cheaper, easier, faster and there's no reason to consult with the COA to make sure they aren't offended. I'm older & I hate white because I was in hospital a lot as a kid. I hate seafoam green for the same reason.

Thanks for this post on paint colors. I remember the 70's (I am old) when the brown wood paneling was popular. I know people who did their whole house in this. In my opinion brown is the most depressing color for walls. one little office I worked in was painted in a medium brown. My co-worker described it as dirty diaper brown! My ex-husband told me he hated my interior decorating...but when he had his own apt., he had everything brown...drapes, rug, chairs, sofa. It was ugly and depressing. I like buttercream or a touch of lemon yellow. A friend painted her living room/dining room a lovely raspberry with white furniture and carpet...I loved that color too.

I actually think Savannah Green would look excellent with a deep peacock green/blue or purple - but used sparingly. For instance, I’m thinking of using it for my headboard color in my Venezuelan Sea (Ben Moore) bedroom. I’m seeing mustard in abundance these days in the stores- so I kinda get why they picked it. Colour is the most important thing to me when it comes to design, so I love videos like this. Prepare for an essay! 😅 Let’s go through some 2023 colours of the year: “Raspberry Blush” by Benjamin Moore - Love this. So bright, fun, and energetic, and I feel it would be easy to introduce to so many different rooms. Reminds me a bit of Pantone’s beautiful but awkwardly named “Living Coral” Colour of the Year from 2019. “Spanish Moss” by Krylon - A very country-fied, cottage green as they present it, but I can see how it could be adapted to several design styles. A dark neutral. “Terra Rosa” by Dunn Edwards - I agree that this is a miss. It works with so limited of a palette because it’s too vivid to match with anything but too muted to be an accent. Not quite. “Redend Point” by Sherwin Williams - I feel like this odd bandage colour doesn’t fit interior design; it could work better in fashion. It just harkens back to the 1980s in unpleasant ways and the pinky/mauvy undertone is truly sickening. No thanks. “Canyon Ridge” by Better Homes & Gardens - This light coral is fun and cute. I still like “Raspberry Blush” a lot better, but it’s a fun sort of sockeye salmon shade that could accommodate people who are less adventurous. “Blank Canvas” by Behr - Can a white even be a colour of the year? Behr says so! This is a perfectly fine warm white with grey undertones, which I suppose it helpful when you’re room planning. “Vining Ivy” by Glidden - This teal is just fine. Not great. I feel it could be more vivid, because it looks a bit dated, like early 1990s. “Rustic Greige” by Dutch Boy - Boring stone colour. Too bland to be exciting. Valspar’s colours: - “Gentle Violet” - So light that it would make a room look like it’s under fluorescent light, which makes it feel cold and industrial. - “Southern Road” - This powdery pink would need to be in perfect circumstances to look right … tough sell for me. - “Flora” - I got bored quite quickly by the sage green obsession everyone had these last few years. Not my thing. - “Everglade Deck” - Easily the best colour in the collection. I wouldn’t pair it with the colours they chose, but it’s a lovely bluish teal. “Color of the Year” by Backdrop - A fun yellow-orange that would make a poppy accent colour. “Darkroom” by HGTV/Sherwin Williams - I really like this warm dark grey. I’d be sure to pair it with very few other colours so that it would sing on its own merits. “Wild Wonder” by Dulux - With apologies to my Twin, this greeny yellow, reminiscent of pus, does not work for me. It isn’t super adaptable to multiple design styles and plays well with a very limited palette. If it’s any consolation, some of the accompanying colours they chose, like Cocoa Pod, are quite lovely on their own. “Melt Water” by Sico - Another okay, average teal. I think you could do better with a slightly different shade and hue. “Moments” by BeautiTone - Exactly the same thoughts as “Melt Water”, because they’re pretty similar. Farrow & Ball has some interesting new colours this year. Bamboozle is similar to that Cinnamon you mentioned in the video. A lot of simple, boring neutrals, but Hopper Head is a nice pure dark grey, and Wine Dark could trick the eye into being bluer than it is in the right context. I’m so looking forward to seeing what Pantone picks this year! Only a few more weeks! 😀

I love all white walls etc. but I live in Michigan, and we have gray skies and snow 6-7 months a year. So, I need "some" warmer colors in my condo. I compromised with a taupe/soft yellow (sort of like 2022 Pale Moon) on the upper part of my walls with white board and batten and trim. This warms my new chocolate brown wide board flooring (I have a large dark Lab that loses hair and I have learned ALWAYS match your flooring to your dog's hair! LOL). My condo is small, only 1,285 sq. ft so the white helps to make it appear larger. My brand new kitchen is light and white with a slightly warmer toned countertop just to warm itup a bit so that it does not end up looking "cold." I use stronger/deeper colors in the furniture, artwork, and fabrics.

They are very strong colours. I rented a new, bigger apartment (in Scandinavia) and now I have a chance to pain my walls accordingly to 2023 colours - I must paint them anyway. I have one problem only: the floor. It is very dominating, dark reddish laminat. Almost already as one of those colours of 2023, but not quite. I do not know what it is, I must figure it out when I move in. I prefere light floors and this thing really is one of the negatives in that apartment. But, I took the challenge and ponder, how to make it look my home- and I always have a beautiful harmonious home, even never so elegant as Lisa’s examples, nor expensive. I use recycled furniture a lot - and Ikea. But now, I do not want anything from Ikea. Now I live in the city where there are several shops that sell old furnitures, especially old Artek-furniture (modern antique), and I think I use them. I like more or less Scandinavian minimalism and I do not want lots of stuff, nor furniture, but what I have, I want to choose carefully. White is my favourite ”colour”. However, it can make a hard contrast with the reddish floor, so I think that at least for the living room, I choose some greyish cool colour to make balance with the red floor - and white, of course. I cannot use green with the red floor, because they are contrasting colours and might give headache if combined together and brown is too warm together with red, at least in my space. Mauve is out of the question, it is an awful colour. I could maybe use it in my underwear, if I am forced to. Rather not, it najes me feel as a grandmom. I have two green design sessels, I think I must let them covered with some white or light grey, because that green does not look good with the red floor. Whatever the colours will be, I want to create a light athmosphere, yet very friendly, not cold. I noticed that in this video, in all examples the floor is very neutral and also the colours and details are very carefully chosen, so it is really hard to say anything about a single colour. It is always the combination that matters, no colour alone is good or bad (or maybe mauve is, but even that, maybe your trash can can be of that colour… in the closet.)

Because I graduated from uni in 1980, large amounts of mauve, or dusty lilac terrify me (as does polished brass *anything*) and if anyone pairs it with dusty teal in the same LRV I may go postal, or start smoking again. Wenge reminds me of black cherry or mahogany woods, so I wonder how it would look with a cooler mint tone? And I love the cinnamon color as either a dining room color (I'm in the far north and the light is very grey/blue & the sun sets are at 4:30 today), or in my bedroom, which has a lot of Japanese prints in it.

Hi Lisa, love your video as always! Totally agree that the mauve is horrendous - but I'm seeing it in so many places in design! I think it's a terrible choice for the homeowner and it reminds me of other industries where the creative team is too focused on winning awards and being innovative/creative rather than doing what's best for the client.

After seeing your video about the Desert Modern style I’m OBSESSED with styling my home that way! I’m thinking of using a warm off white in all the living areas but want something cozier in the bedroom. I was thinking a midtone terracota type color but would that be too orange?

What I'd really like to hear from you is exteriors, particularly colours that go well with traditional brick. I didn't like it when I bought the house, but 5 yrs later have come to love it. Circa 1960, an almost yellow almost orange brick but with a nice rosy undertone, not an annoying orange. I thought the front doors (brownstone style duplex) should be an "almost-black" indigoish or aubergineish/raisinish tone (WENGE?), and trims being a mushroomy greige or bluish gray. Help is needed to avoid too many nutso-looking hours staring at your house with Bristol board samples hanging all over it.

Sorry, but I don't like any of the 2023 colors except for (maybe) the Blush one. I don't like dark colors for homes (interior or exterior). I might use a medium tone paint as an accent on one or two walls of a room, but other than this, I stick with light colors on walls. I save the deeper colors for furnishings or accessories. It makes the spaces look so much larger and cheerier.

My bedroom has a yellow undercoat with a glaze on top I did with plastic grocery bags. It’s been 10 years on and I need to do some crack repair. So with the repair I’ll have to repaint. Is glazing still “in” style? I live in a log home and it does go well with the decor in my opinion and I still love it.

There’s one called Coral Dust 2173-50 but it’s quite deep and you might want to reduce it 50% depending on the light in your room. Remember, do the rule of 3; 3 colours, 3 places, 3times of day and take notes. Hope that helps.

It’s funny, but the one new colour you dislike, is and has always been one of my favourites😁 Yes, It does look like something that might come out of the rear end of a farm animal, but in small doses and combined with a sexy turquoise (I know, it sounds crazy, but it’s a good crazy😜), moody teal, gold, golden yellow, a “get in line” wack of badass black and just for good measure - or wtf measure - chuck in a cheeky contrast pop of punchy (neon if you dare) orangy-red and what do you get? A headache, if not careful, OR the most delicious, sensual colour combination innnnnn the woooorld🔥

Would you talk more about why "vining ivy" was close to good but went too far and what is different about everglade deck? I completely agree with you but don't know how to describe the difference. My large master bedroom is painted a similar color to vining ivy (I think it's the original color from the builder 15 years ago). My master bath is quite large and that color feels overwhelming to me in there even though blues and greens are my absolute favorite. Would love any feedback on what's going on there with these two colors.

I agree! Lisa's personality is uplifting and her videos are very informative and inspiring. I've been thinking about accent walls in our little condo.... But first I thought I'd try getting a large blank canvas and painting it with mixed colors, mostly the one I want to use as an accent wall color. A sort of abstract painting. That way I could see if it was livable and it would be easy to change. What do you think?
