I love this..but it's killing me a bit for this reason: my Mom is in care now and we are figuring out where her furniture will go. I love her vintage mid-century modern [Danish Modern teak] pieces but they don't line up with my more elegant rustic style. Killing me to have them sold as my siblings don't want them..both because they're beautiful and simple..they share that with rustic..but ..as you've pointed out, Lisa, they probably won't fit. The only thing I might be able to do is put teak table and 6 chairs in the new 3 season room I'm getting built soon, as it's going to be all white, darker floor. My interior in the main areas of the house are gyproced and not extremely rustic except for a couple large beams in the ceiling, deep window sills [telltale of log construction] and heavy, wide, plain woodwork. I'm planning to paint walls, ceiling and woodwork in the same colour, different sheens, so that makes it less rustic I guess. And I'm going to open the space between kitchen and lvrm by knocking out a stub wall except for load bearing posts, so ..a more open concept feel..and more contemporary. Still, Danish Modern pieces might feel out of place. I know.☺This is a situation for The Dezign Club..but I have to figure this out faster than September 10. I will. 🙂

I learn so much from your videos! 💜 No matter what one’s personal style is, it helps to know other styles. I love the look of contemporary, but I’m finding I’m more transitional myself (best of both worlds). For example on kitchen cabinets, I ADORE the slick no-hardware look. But I lived in an apartment once that tried to go for that look and I found that they are so high maintenance. They get dirty or get fingerprint smudges on the edges where you constantly touch them to open them (especially when one is cooking and hands are messy). I cleaned them, of course, but after a while all the touching and cleaning started to damage the paint (they were done on the cheap, clearly, just painted wooden cabinetry). From then I decided I’d rather have handles on all cabinet doors. I don’t have to touch the cabinet paint, they are easy to clean, and I can always change them if I want to refresh the look. Does it make my kitchen a little more transitional? Sure. Just a touch (pardon the pun 🙂).

Transitional/Traditional is my favorite style. I love antiques, especially from the victorian era. I love all the details and millwork and artistry that went into them. I do usually not prefer the enormous patterns though, so I would prefer to update the upholstery and keep the silhouette intact. I also love darker cozy spaces and my neutral of choice is gray, which everyone seems to despise but whatever

Re. “Early Relative” style, can you share some of you wisdom on on how to pick the best of the “ inheritance “ to choose a style and dispose of the rest? I have inherited some nice pieces of older/ antique furniture, am in the process of moving and trying to minimize as well as having a unified look to my new small space. Although hard to part with some loved pieces, need a process to make a decision on what to keep and what needs to go. Thanks!

For traditional, I would stress, again, what she said about making sure it fits with the rest of your home. Make sure it fits with the *Architecture*, especially. My craftsman house has an ornate, custom ($$$$$) Tuscany kitchen that looks WAY overdone and absolutely ridiculous for this house... And the previous owners put this in with the help of a professional designer. So, beware!
@sarahrosen4985
@sarahrosen4985 3 года назад
The designer probably pulled their hair out trying to explain to a “but this is what I want “ client OR the designer couldn’t care less and had ‘a vision’ like the designer who did my ex-mother-in-law’s downstairs. The designer (mid 1980s) was going for super modern in mauve and grey with vertical blinds suited to an office building in a very traditional neighborhood in a traditional 2-storey 1950s house with a very 1960s (?) wood veneer peg leg dining suite. It looked like a designer bulldozed over her client and everything they were keeping just for the sake of ‘her vision’. My ex-in-laws have moved house and country to an apartment in a city. I keep trying to get pictures or descriptions from my daughters to here what the new place looks like sans designer but my daughters just don’t care that much.

Yes, I'm wondering if an outdoor kitchen in a small backyard is worth the outlay. I feel like the fire pit, swing and karaoke stage with boulder waterfalls coming down each side already eat up most of my courtyard space, such that only a BBQ grill will keep the space feeling open. There will be 4 seating vignettes. I could make way for the outdoor kitchen, but that is such a huge outlay that I'm leaning toward skipping it.

I feel like my husband and I are the only two people left on earth who actually really like cherry wood finished cabinets. I know it's super unfashionable anymore, because everyone is painting everything, but to me painted cabinets don't seem likely to wear well and I really love nicely finished natural wood. I wish I could find some better ideas for how to update some things in the kitchen which didn't revolve around "paint the cabinets!!"

@stormwright8300 3 года назад
I wouldn't think so. I'd say as long as the finish matches, it would be fine. Some brands don't have exactly what you want so going with a different brand in the same finish or color will tie everything together and be functional for you
@SweetStuffOnMonarchLane

This was excellent, Lisa! Now I know why I had such a hard time deciding what I wanted for my kitchen remodel... I love them all!!! But my home is mainly a non-ornate cottage style so I've decided my kitchen style will be transitional. Shaker cabinets, light-medium neutral wood stained maple on the bottom cabs and painted white for the tops. Brushed nickel simple hardware and stellar snow quartz countertops. It's the appliance decisions that are killing me! I'm torn between stainless (I'm worried about fingerprints!) and white, or maybe a combo! I'm leaning white because my kitchen faces north and I think it would help brighten it up, but still not sure. It's so hard to picture it, and even my "inspiration picture" has a combination of appliances... so maybe there's not a right or wrong answer! It's hard to restrain yourself when you like so many different styles, but it's for the best so it doesn't look confused and chaotic in the end! Thank you (and your team!) SO much for all your hard work... you have been the single most helpful person in my kitchen remodel, no question, and I appreciate it more than you know. 🤗

I'm kind of shocked that these very ornate traditional kitchens are still considered in style. To me they are just so busy and over the top in a weird plasticky 80s/2000s kind of way, it pains me to look at it. Mind you, a traditional cottage style kitchen without these frills looks lovely because it appears much more functional and no nonsense in comparison. I suppose because cottage style kitchens with butcher blocks and cast iron taps look like a place where back in the day ordinary people or servants would have actually cooked, whereas this ornate ivory coloured Versailles type kitchen with blingy chandeliers is a ridiculous concept because I doubt even at Versailles the kitchen would have looked ornate as no nobility would have ever been present in there. It would have been a dark, slightly grubby cottage style kitchen with butcher blocks and cast iron tools and taps there too. The ornate kitchen is sort of a fantasy concept and I think that's why it gives me goosebumps.

And all I thought looking at them: How are you supposed to CLEAN these "Versailles" kitchens?
@stormwright8300
@stormwright8300 3 года назад
That's why I often define my kitchen style as Transitional, but leaning Traditional. I want it to be as functional as possible with modern amenities, while still having architectural details and a few traditional elements and antique pieces. Ornate Versailles kitchens like that all white one or the one with the 3d backsplash are annoying because you can tell they spend more time cleaning than cooking

White is timeless so long as you keep the backsplash white and neutral in style. You can bring in pops of color at a low cost with things like hand towels hanging from your stove front and/or drawer pulls, and with a matching vase of flowers. When you grow tired of that color, it's inexpensive to change out these items, rather than changing out cabinets.

@@coastaldiva I've found that painted cabinets, even with the highest quality of cabinet paint, don't last very long (a year, tops.) For that reason, I am doing my kitchen piecemeal. First, the upper cabinets. Next, the backsplash. Then a new sink, countertops and lower cabinets. Those painted cabinets have got to go, and soon!

Lisa!! This video was SO helpful and well done! You could totally make a whole series out of this breaking down the sub-styles within the 3 main styles like mid-century modern, scandinavian, coastal, industrial, etc! We have a 1956 mid-century modern home so there are a lot of contemporary elements but it's also transitional because it has that 1950s family cozy non-pretentious look too.

I’ve got a territorial 1980’s desert open concept home with big beautiful satillo tiles. Come from mid century modern home and live that sensibility. We’re eclectic and like peaceful but not boring look. Have honey colored shaker cabinets, black handles and a huge black brown ish guartz countertop. We’re torn… do we go with more drama for backsplash and do cement ish black or gray or quieter cream with a few 2 x 2 Mexican tiles scattered randomly ( like 5) it’s only 9 feet but it’s a focal point..indecisive in tucson. Lisa, I love your sensibilities and style.

Especially small kitchens or lack of storage kitchens, and for convenience sake, install a pot rack in the ceiling. I chose a stainless steel oval shaped one to hang above my island/peninsula to store (and show off) my stainless steel pots and tools. It is chandelier-like and makes for easy access to pots and cooking tools; it negates all that scrambling thru cupboards for pots, and eases up on storage. Plus IKEA sells a handy wall-mounted pot lid holder. Also I detest sinks and cooktops in kitchen islands, which often serve as a work surface, dining area and gathering place. Keep the cooking mess away from here on the perimeter / back counter tops. Get over it if you think you need to be putting on a cooking show for your guests at your centre island.

hahahaha, you would hate my kitchen. I love it. I live in a circa 1895 Victorian era cottage and my cabinetry is either original, original modified, or recycled from an old drug store cabinet. The original owner was a drug store owner, and the second owners were an oral surgeon and nurse who loved to pinch pennies. My sink is an enameled cast iron "farmhouse" one that has the drain board to the left. My cookstove is a circa late 1940s/early 1950s Magic Chef gas model. I had reproduction bead board added as wainscot, most of which is topped with a grooved shelf for displaying antiques and collectibles. The doors are all period pieces added to the home after I bought it (the home was remodeled in the 1950s in the streamline style of the time, it didn't fit for the most part so most of it has been replaced with period or period appropriate pieces or reproductions), and the streamlined woodwork around the door frames were replaced with period trims and woodwork salvaged from other historic homes in my hometown that were scheduled for demolition. The floor is wood laminate; I did not choose that floor, so come time to replace it, I'm looking at authentic linoleum (NOT vinyl flooring). The only modern things in my kitchen are the refrigerator, coffee maker, toaster, and microwave (when that goes it will not be replaced). The countertops and backsplash are authentic 1950s Mid Century Modern Boomerang formica in yellow with teal and beige boomerangs; I thought about replacing it but it has grown on me so it stays. I keep adding period appropriate pieces to the kitchen-a chrome multi-arm towel drying rack, a white with black trim enamel baking table, a herb/spice cabinet made from a wooden cabinet that was to be thrown in the dumps, etc. Lots and lots of old stuff in my kitchen and throughout my home...and that's the way it's going to be.

My kitchen is transitional. To open up views out the kitchen window from the living room, I am having to eliminate two kitchen cabinets. Some of the lost cabinet space will be made up by taking all the new cabinets to the ceiling and bringing the depth of the new cabinets out from the walls about 4 more inches. And I will be adding one new cabinet where there was previously not one. Because my kitchen is small, and cabinet space is at a premium, I'm wondering if a transitional look can carry solid frosted glass (not paned) cabinet fronts and plain silver bar pulls. I have that in mind in hopes of giving the kitchen a more spacious feel. Lisa, do you think lightly frosted fronts could fill that bill? I don't really want clear glass because then every single thing in the cabinets can be seen, and I want to stay away from a cluttered look.

My kitchen is somewhat a nightmare - its hmm peculiar -the best word for it ,the house build in 50 th ,but not MCM ,traditional,but cottage, but with somewhat European vibe ...its oak-its huge beams with weaved wood arch in the middle at huge taking half of the kitchen island -impossible to eat at - because of the side beams -can't take them as all electric for living room and a kitchen to the front entry goes inside them - the previous owner was eccentric plumber - we thought we would be able to remodel - lol for that we have to take half a house apart , we invest about 2000 in electric ,but to redo - we so far didn't get any estimates under 10.000 for electric alone -so we can't move our gas stove ,we can't move our sink ,we took out part of weird corner cabinet that had top with doors,than a small landing size of bandana and just an empty wooden corner as a triangle notch from counter height to the floor 🤣vase?,no,enough for put beer keg -no ,wine -no ...honestly after 2 years starring at ,one day ,i just took big mama - the huge hammer ⚒ and empty the corner ,paint and later find slim microwave cabinet,because the standard pantry too big for it ... we had new( back then) in 2005 appliances -top notch,so since then they shine among oak with brass handles and brass doors corners - old man for sure love brass,add cafe style wooden shatters on the each of 3 windows - can't remove them , way they attached ,oh and under all heavy oak cabinets and beams and appliances no floor tiles ,lol after this video , i have a burning desire to demolish my kitchen ...but can't so its traditional meet cottage married to some other country country, did i mentioned its pretty big awkward space .for cottage - on a street of small town ,about 30.000 ppl,corner lot with small nice creek on a back of our 1 acre lot ,in a full finished basement i got build- in bar with walls -as a separate room inside made of real boulders - no one see that coming, as we thought its just an faux application ,just a face of huge stones- it till we try ,so far every person who come to estimate gave me look ,like lady those boulders must be brought there before walls and stairs and everything build ,they all say they would contact me later ,big roundish boulders,which no one had means to evacuate/remove -but that another story , to be positive its for sure survive any tornado as its basically a cave with window and a door,I mentioned that cave because its under the kitchen ...lol just have to get it out of my chest..lol ...At least we have great facets ! ! !

My house has a lot of knotty pine. Walls and floors are pine. But the open kitchen is all white and beadboard, not knotty pine. When we bought the house, it seemed totally disconnected. I began putting in white...white ceilings, white trim, new white trim windows, white beam between the kitchen and living area and a big chunky white electric fireplace on the living room side. Trying to tie in the white cabinets. But it's not enough. It's still disconnected...in style I guess mostly. The knotty pine looks country, log cabin or something. The kitchen is white shaker looking cabinets with beadboard inserts and a big chunky beadboard island. The kitchen seems cottage style. Both are pretty on their own, they don't flow and they're open to one another. I don't know what to do to make them gel.

This is going to be fun because we'll get to see so many great ideas, gorgeous outcomes, whether they would fit our home or purse or not. Oh, one of each, please! I love so much that you are showing us, but the one that gets me (by surprise, I think) is that I adore the the mosaic emblem with pheasants behind the stove and may have to go look for a home to put that in. LOL. I have to say that in terms of finding the right stuff, it might help with your designer to say that you have pets and want the heat source under the flooring, so now what is available to me? That gives the designer, even if it's just an advisor at the shop, your life requirements and you may hold back that if you found only ugly choices that you may reconsider the heat source placement, but the pets are family and not negotiable. I think sometimes there are problems when you do not even make clear to a salesperson what your life needs are: like, if your husband is quite tall, but also often in a wheelchair. Though I must say that, unless I fall in love with a piece, I often buy jewelry this way. When we got our wedding/engagement rings, I told the jeweler what metals, stones, styles, and price range we were looking in. Then it was more or less "show us what you've got." Then I eliminated what I did not like, my spouse eliminated what he did not like, and then we chose with fairly little time or debate required and none of our parameters were overlooked.

I liked the modern and transitional kitchens, but the traditional kitchens were not very traditional. No one had kitchens with intricate moldings and glasswork, not even royalty. Traditional kitchens are much more rustic and utilitarian. I recommend looking at the kitchens of historic castles or Victorian era kitchens if you want inspiration for a traditional kitchen. Traditional kitchens should not try to look like the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles.
