I just found you because I was watching The Last Homely House and she suggested that I should find you. I thank you both for the great inspirational videos that keep me going.
Wow I am excited after watching Kates Homely House. It is a way that I can use my scraps and at my own pace. I love your informative video. Thank you. Now I will watch No. 2
The second time I made this wash technique I found it very helpful to sort the individual colors by value And have them stacked so I could see them and also having the transition blocks sorted and bear the colors they coordinated to it just went together smoothly I did not do any changing after I had it layed out Michele.
No hablo mucho ingles pero me encanto como nos explico formar bloques y de una manera sencilla y muy bonito todo. Felicitaciones y si puede hable mas despacio para entender mejor y muchas gracias.
Hooray! I'm a non-quilter, but a dear friend is an avid quilter, and I used assist her with fabric sorting & pressing until illness prevented her from quilting for over a year. I'm so looking forward to assisting her again when she is able to return to her beloved hobby, because it's such a lovely, peaceful way to share our time together. She has a room chock-full of bins filled with scraps I've pressed and color sorted for her. I think that a project like this is something that I can help her with. I can piece together 3 1/2" squares for her using whatever fabric she tells me use. Then I can help her with the color washing layout on her vertical board by having her choose the blocks from a tray in her lap, and showing me where to set them by using a laser pointer! I can hardly wait to watch this video again, but this time with and a cup of tea; I hope this will be a project she will feel well enough to attempt together! If so, I'll post our progress or send pics. A big THANK YOU from the Pacific Northwest, USA
Joy Lund, it made my heart happy that this made your happy as a way to help your friend. Many blessings to you both, and to Terry Rowland for her equally generous spirit. Well done, Ladies!
Fabulous tutorial. I just spent two days struggling with weird math to create a similar 3-inch block. Kate, from the Last Homely House, sent us over to you. I am so grateful she did. This is exactly what I needed to get started on my Christmas gift idea. Thank you! I look forward to seeing your other offerings.
Rolling the scrapes in a flannel backed tablecloth, is a great idea for laying out your scraps. If you don't have a design wall. Which I don't but rolling it up in the tablecloth and unrolling it. Is a wonderful option to starting it up again. Thank you for such a great tip.
Just arrived from the Lime Green Sofa. My first thought as you happy face popped up on the screen was "that quilt behind you reminded me if a Gustav Klimt painting". What a great use of scraps. Thank you so much for your time x
Great tutorial, thanks so much for taking the time to prepare all this superb information for us to use. It's like having you give a personal class for each of us!
Love this! I thank The Last Homely House for referring you. You and your quilt behind you have inspired me. My scraps will be SO happy to have met you.
Wow so glad Kate recommended your channel,I love this scrappy quilt and can’t wait to start playing with my scraps! Your tutorial was so very clear. Thank you.
Just found you through Kate at Last Homely House. This is so inspiring and makes me want to start one right now! I just recently finished a "crumb" quilt. The process of just sewing bits together is just so relaxing and rewarding. Scraps?...yes I have a few (boxes that is) So thanks for the video and the inspiration!
I’m a newbie and just finished my very first quilt from scraps leftover when I was involved in Facebook group making mask for different organizations when Covid was soaring I had a lot of scraps. So I’m still learning different techniques for making quilts this video has certainly helped me tremendously, thank you for taking the time I really like scrapie quilts…🦋🦋🦋
I think this is awesome! I tipped out some scraps and started making blocks straight away. They are 3.5” …How many do you need to make a proper impact with the colour wash? And a decent sized quilt ? I’d appreciate your thoughts - I have about 20 in this first sitting - seems like a drop in the quilty ocean! Thank you - Kate x
Kate sent me as well! This is inspiring to many of us! I think I’ll actually stagger my rows a bit, so there will be absolutely no matching seams. I love the colour wash tips! I also think your piecing technique would be a great stress-free method for using scraps to make a temperature quilt! I’m now subscribed to your channel. Stay well! Muskoka ON 🇨🇦
I must be one of a few quilters who found you Terry, loved your content and THEN found Kate from the last homely house. I was so pleased when she recommended you and I felt that I already had you as a friend. I knew exactly what she wanted us to discover by learning your technique. Bravo Terry.
Thank you Carrie I had found Kate quite a while ago and then she found my Colorwash challenge and wanted to share it with all the people on the lime green sofa . I am so pleased and honoured she shared this
I particularly love the off set blocks as it creates great visual interest. Kate from The Last Homely House recommended your channel and I am so happy she did.
Hi Terry. I came over here from Kate, at The Last Homely House. She's trying your idea, and mentioned looking at your channel. Thank you for showing us your ideas. I subscribed.
I love this! There is some "loose" organization but it essentially kind of lets you run free with whatever you want to use! I haven't been very inspired lately but I am now! Thanks for the great tutorial and inspiration!!!
I watched and enjoyed your tutorial and plan to start my own scrappy quilt using your method. Then heard Kate from the last Homely House extolling the virtues of your tutorial so that totally sealed it!! Thanks so much.
Kate has certainly done many of us a mitzvah by introducing you, your method and your challenge. I have another quilt on the go right now. Your idea will inspire my next one. And I'll be on the lookout for interesting scraps! I subscribed and look forward to more inspiration. Being an Engineer, I may use a little more math but it will not restrict me to focus on precision. By the way, I would not throw the small pieces that don't suit this method. There are ways to use even tiny bits.
Terry, I have found your technique to be completely addictive! My favorite thing to make now with the squares is pillows using 5 squares x 5 squares, with a 2 1/2” border ending up with an 18” pillow. I’ve made over a dozen so far and I’ve got plenty more scraps to go thru. It is fast and fun!
Amazing Kate TLHH sent me to you. I admire all sorts of quilting but for me using fabric scraps is how it was meant to be! Looking forwards to more of your fab tutorials and ideas 👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you, I also arrived here via Homely House. I love scrap quilts, I am currently sewing sari ribbon that turned out to be too low quality to use on a different project. As the ribbon isn’t very stable I am sewing onto calico blocks and some are very crazy and I follow the ribbon, sometimes sewing squiggles rather than regimental sewing stripes. Occasionally I end up with gaps but I will use fabric paint when I see the quilt front and this helps to bring the whole to look more together. I now keep my too small to sew with scraps to use as stuffing for toys etc. I made a set of hams for a friend which are stuffed this way. As a result very little gets thrown for ragging. Again, thank you for your very inspiring and restful video.
Love your tutorial. This is such a great way to make a dent in my garbage bag of scraps. Thanks to Kate for sending us your way. Looking forward to viewing more. Your teaching style is great.
Loved the tutorial! Looking for a new sewing machine so I can begin this project. Your color work is motivational. Would love any suggestion on brands of good sewing machines for this work. Subscribed to Kate at The Last Homely House, glad I clicked on the link to your site. I'll keep watching your for more beautiful work!
This is a great idea and since you start with 3" finished, one can use scraps that finish at any 3" divisor. One could have a 15" finished square with various scraps in the same color family and have the same scrap in the middle of all of your blocks (like gold or a metallic) for continuity as well as having high contrast middle pieces in other blocks. One could even make a complete colorwashed block from 3" inch strips to make a 15" finished block that goes from dark blue on one corner to medium blue in the diagonal corner and then take the smaller 3" blocks and surround it to continue the wash. Take the dark blue to dark green on one end and the medium blue to light blue on the other side. Thanks for the inspiration!
There are so many great quilts that can be made using this easy organic block. I have had several people share their quilts made from watching my videos I just did a post on my Terry Rowland -T Row Studios Face Book page check it out there are some beauties
Kate sent me. Love this idea! I buy fabric scraps by the pound from the local charity shop and this project is perfect for my collection. Thank you for sharing this!
Wonderful tutorial, you are a great teacher, Terry. I plan on making these blocks out of bright batiks. I am a scrappy/wonky quilter but like some structure so plan on turning these little blocks into 9 patches with some sashing.
Hi Terry. Kate from The last homely house has sent me. Love this quilt idea with all the scraps of fabric and I am going to join in with this. Your quilt looks awesome. Thanks for your video. Take care xxx
Oh you're welcome Terry! I shared your tip with Kate at The Last Homely House as she is the one who suggested we take a look at your video on the scrappy squares for your Colorwash Quilt. I've watched her stitching up lots of blocks while chatting with us on RU-vid. It was fun to see your method and to understand now why she calls her scrap project "Terry Blocks". Love it!
@@kathleenfitch2582 yes I am very hounoured that she calls it the Terry block quilt she actually put. Her top on the September page in her calendar for 2024
Proof, simple uncomplicated sets are certainly working for you! Colors are beautiful! WOW, Thanks for sharing your crafting with us, so much enjoyed this! lis
Great tutorial for scraps, and will remember this for a future quilt. I just finished doing two quilts with scraps so it’s time to big up a stash. Thank you and Kate from the last homely house for sharing 👍❤️😊
I love this concept! When you were talking about the Tula fabrics, I was thinking Kaffe would work really well too. Then you mentioned him. Now I need to get some quilts made so I have some scraps. Yes you can buy scraps, but I like being able to say I remember this quilt, and this one, etc. Or if you can do a scrap swap with a guild or other group, that can be fun too. (I've got more fabric and ideas than sense - or cents these days. 😀)
Kate from the Last Homely House sent me over. Love your idea and boy oh boy do I have scraps. Particularly love the batiks you are doing. Thanks so much I subscribed.
Thank you for the tutorial, I will watch more tomorrow, as colorwash is working out of my box. I love making scrap quilts, but almost always with a distinct pattern in it and using white or very dark to give the quilt structure and make it easy on the eyes. So when I saw what Kate was up to, and giving us the tip to watch you for a really good tutorial, I got curious. I want to learn more about the thinking behind color wash, and I’ve got plenty of scraps to give it a try. 😊
Wonderful tutorial a pleasure to watch. Arrived here via Kate at the last homely house and so glad I came. Have to give this a go real soon. Thank you! xx
Another Lime Green Sofa friend. Haven't walked into my sewing room in two years due to elder care stuff, but you have inspired me to get back to my happy place. Thank you Terry.
You eye for color combination is absolutely wonderful. I don't know if that is trained, innate, or from years of quilting but your way of combining is so stunning!
This is genius - and very generous of you to share what amounts to an online workshop. I’ve always been intimidated by quilting as it looks as if you have to be meticulous but you method makes it less scary! Thank you so much. PS the quilt behind you reminds me of a Klimt painting, gorgeous.
I 🥰that the last homely house did her take in your & many if us quilters take on this stash buster no hard math rules it led to you 😉🍂🌳🍁🎃🕊️💜🙏💚🕊️ keep Rocking 🤙 the good stuff 👍 Beautiful person 🤗 the 🖖 continue with your creative energy travels Play zen teaching your Technics 😋
Kate and Anna from The Last Homley House sent us over to watch your wonderful tutorial first, before we go back to them to see what to do next! Very exciting. xxx
I really like this quilt it's so colorful, I like the idea of using scrap pieces to create it. Thank you for this video it was very informative. And I can appreciate the information about the color wave of the fabrics from one to another. I'm going to give this a try with my scrap pieces of fabric.
I have been struggling for so long trying to wrap my brain around scrap quilting. I sort and get everything ready then BAM I freeze. You have finally unfrozen me and I thank you so very much. Such a great tutorial! ❤😊🇨🇦
Oh Lorraine that makes me so Happy to hear . I love quilting with scraps and trying to convince others that scrap quilts can be so beautiful . I would love for you to share your progress with me I am on FB under Terry Rowland - T Row Studios and on Instagram @Trowstudios. Enjoy your journey through your scraps.
You can use a pool Noodle to wrap up your quilts and the three layers. Easier to lay out each layer and keep them straight. Someone in utube showed that.
Wow! What a great view into your thinking process - both how you approach the blocks (or, I guess your scrap pile) and the layout. One thing that I didn't quite "get" was what you mean by the "centers transitioning the surrounding colour". Could you expand on your thinking, there? I thought you meant a lighter center will bring a (say) blue-green block closer to the green side, and a darker blue center would make it look bluer, but in your high contrast examples, I didn't see which way the blocks rows were trending...
sorry On the cross shaped blocks I had the transition block in the center position ,that block I wanted to show how you could pull different colors from that block and use it to go from one color on one side of the block and go to a different color on the other side so a perfect trasition block to bridge the color gap between the two areas. I hope that helps
I had to stop and think through that bit of instruction as well, Kathleen. Then my brain pegged it … the “center” she is referring to is like the center of a 9-patch block. Then I could see her meaning. The center might be mostly pink on one side, so put a pink neighbor against that side; the other side of the center might be more blue, so put a blue neighbor on that side, etc.
@@hollywaddell6727 ya it is hard explaining what is going a million miles an hour through my brain . I am glad you figured out me placing the multicolored block in the middle and matching colored blocks to each side
