@@kathynicholson103 this. and it creates a vicious cycle. they refuse medication and proper care, we can't force it unless they're locked up in centers. this girl for example has already made it clear she'll stop her meds once out. her family can't pin her down and force medicine in her mouth, that would interfere in her own human rights. there is no easy answer. many of the mentally unwell on the streets have this same story. there is help in many areas, but not all; and they need to be able to want it and comply with services many will not. so they just self medicate, get arrested for something, get clean and maybe well while in jail, let out, self medicate repeat.

Sorry but to blame Regan is disingenuous. This whole thing started with psychiatrists in the 50s and 60s who though to many people were institutionalized who should not have been. Yes when Regan was Governor his predecessor and he reduced the numbers in hospitals but did so at the urging of psychiatrists. This was pushed onto federal and mostly state governments by these so called experts who thought mental illness could be better managed on an outpatient basis. For a lot of people that just doesn’t work. I bet if you go back and really dig into this you will find a bunch of liberals were responsible for this. They mess up pretty much everything they touch. While homelessness itself is not criminal, the behavior that leads someone to be on the street almost always is. There is a small minority of street people out there who are clean and just want to be left alone. They respect private property rights and you never see them because they don't want to be seen. No problem there. The majority however, are keen to continue the illegal and self-destructive behavior in the midst of a law-abiding society, without shame and remorse. They care nothing for the rules of said society they feel entitled to receive benefits from. If we stop coddling that behavior and prosecute it, we will deter some of that behavior and free up resources for those legitimately suffering from mental stuff. There is a big difference between those on the street as a result of poor and impulsive lifestyle choices, and those there because they are unable to function. The two deserve very different approaches, and right now we are grouping them all together.

People with serious mental illness do much worse when unhoused and have no natural supports, like support from family. Emotional support, especially. It's also much easier to get someone on involuntary court ordered mental health treatment, which is done through each county's Mental Health Court. It's tough to do, as usually two or more people have to witness behaviors that would make them a danger to self or others, or persistently acutely disabled or gravely disabled. Every state has different laws on how to do this. It's easier to come up with a plan though, if the person has already been determined seriously mentally ill, as case management helps with the paperwork to get them forced into treatment.

In voluntary hold in my state is only for 72hours… and the “hold” is totally traumatic and though it might keep them from killing themself the trauma can worsten the conditions. People with serious mental health issues need care and comfort and its societies job to take care of the most vulnerable. They are not being taken care of and without a societal safety net we just see more and more terrible outcomes that cost more then if we just built the infrastructure that cares for the vulnerable people in society. In NY we have “Kendra’s Law”. If a judge finds a person to be a danger to themself or others (and they are non-compliant with their meds), the judge will order they be deemed AOT (Assisted Outpatient Treatment). AOT patients have nurses visit them daily to administer medication. If the patient refuses, they are committed to the psych ward involuntarily. Fortunately many medications are now available via injections which stay in the patient’s system for a month (that has helped tremendously for patients who are not safe when off their anti-psychotics)… I hope this family finds help🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻. The same situation happened with my mother. She was diagnosed with schizophrenia back in 2011 after we got an emergency petition to get her a psych evaluation. She was transported between four different hospitals until she finally walked out of the last one in late 2011. She lived on the streets for a little over 11 years until she became physically ill. To make a long story short, she had two strokes, gangrene, frostbite and had to get both her legs and knees amputated in 2023. She spent a total of two months in the hospital until they transferred her to a nursing home last March. What happened to my mom is a perfect example of a broken mental health care system. The system didn't care once she was homeless and on the streets and would've cared even less had she died. The only reason why she's getting care now is because she became physically ill.

Simple: group homes aren’t paid enough for the amount of work and liability that goes on. Not enough employees willing to work this type of job. Even if you paid an aid above market value, the owner would have to make sure the meds are correctly given and be on top 24/7 that there is no abuse. With inflation and taxes on the rise there is no wonder group homes are closing down and people are on the streets.

As a person with Schizoaffective disorder, my situation is the complete opposite. My family could care less about me, but against the odds, I've stayed on my medication, have gone to school and I've worked. I would say I have two advantages over her that have made me successful with my Schizoaffective disorder: 1) I've had extensive therapy for two years when my condition started, 2) my condition was caught very early. The one thing that keeps coming up in my head is that, if she's not taking her pills, then she's too sick to go that route. Pills are usually for patients that have shown enough levels of autonomy and responsibility. I wish I could tell her family that they have injections for certain psychotropic medications. Injections of Invega Sustenna helped me become very stable and right-minded. While Invega Sustenna lasts 1 month, I've heard Invega Trinza lasts 3 months. I think I've even heard of a 6-month lasting medication (I don't know the name though). For someone in her situation, these medications would be her best solution. Especially when she leaves for months at a time.

She’s probably psychic. I see and film spirits. Lucky for me they show on camera so everyone knows I’m not delusional. She should try the velo technique. It created a buffer and low vibe spirits are not able to get close because I balanced my energy. The lady who developed it is a consciousness expert. Every psychotic person should try it because it can help to some degree not saying everything is spiritual but I didn’t believe in spirits until I started filming the orbs.

A lot of the time the pills have worse side effects anyway. This young lady needs to step off the street drugs and talk to a psychologist but more likely she will end up dead in the street. Not many good options for her other than sitting in an asylum or trying to work a job she would probably be fired from. I don't think your case was nearly as severe especially since it was caught early. One can hope America would help people but no we treat low class citizens like they are worthless.

I understand the logic behind why they closed so many hospitals but it's clear the decision was made by people with no experience in this world. In my view, this situation is one of the top three most pressing issues in the US. When so many mental institutions were closed during the 70s, it was due to concerns with patient treatment. Instead of improving the institutions, they just shut the doors of many. There were proposals for more community-based care, but at the end of the day, these services never materialized or were lacking in funds. Now, we just treat the mentally ill by imprisoning them or letting them disintegrate on the streets to abuse or be abused. In many we ways, we are more barbaric today in how we treat the mentally ill than the 70s and families are left with little to no resources.

Some individuals cannot rectify the human, mortal experience. Existence is definitely not easy, but it's meant to prepare the soul for what's coming *next*. Without that preparation... it's, uhmmm... it's gonna be rough. 😕 Rougher than mortality, but in extraordinarily different ways. 🐲✨🐲✨🐲✨ "Before I start, I must see my end. Destination known, my mind's journey now begins. Upon my chariot, heart and soul's fate revealed. In time, all points converge, hope's strength resteeled. But to earn final peace at the universe's endless refrain, we must see all in nothingness... before we start again." 🐲✨🐲✨🐲✨ --Diamond Dragons

Probably because the stay made her feel even worse. Many people commit right after they get out or not long after because they are afraid of losing their change again and are also further traumatized by the mental health system and it’s criminalization of mental distress (often caused by external or societal problems).

It’s hard to do this as parents but they did exactly what they should have done to keep her, them and others safe. I wish others would do this if necessary. It’s a big shame our system is so messed up that there is no where for her. This country shut down most facilities where people like this could go in the past. That is what causes this horrific homeless problem. Some people just cannot live outside a facility because they will stop taking their meds. We need to stop sending our tax dollars to other countries while ignoring our own people who need help. Our government is supposed to be representing us. It is absurd how they ignore our wishes and just do whatever they want with our money. This won’t stop until we make it stop.

My fiancée has schizophrenia. He constantly hears terrifying voices, couldn’t work well (he tried many, MANY minimum wage jobs). Before we met, he lived day-by-day in a MOTEL in a rural, small town because of outrageous rental costs. It’s worse than being in prison. At least prison is guaranteed shelter and food. People with severe mental health are discarded like trash, blamed for the condition they did not choose to have.

I have seen this happen in real life. Mental health services were called when a local man went off his meds. He convinced MH services that he was fine somehow but he surely was not. Eventually the police were called and he spent a year in jail before he was transferred to mental health services. He was in assisted living for another year and then turned loose where he again stopped taking his meds and the cycle continues. It is madness for the families of people who have mental illness.

Can't the parents get legal guardianship or conservator status for this adult daughter now that she is declared permanently incompetent? Without being her guardian, they really don't have any say regardless of the heartbreaking situation. I feel sad for all of them.

So many families including my own are caught up in this cycle with no end in sight. Yes, they are adults but when they have clearly demonstrated that they cannot make sound decisions for themselves someone needs to do it for them. Closing all of the mental institutions because of the abuses was well intentioned but has just created another problem. Many end up homeless being preyed on or preying on other people.

Yup. Been there. Still there too. Trying to get help is a nightmare. You have to wait until that moment they are lucid and ask for help but it seems if they know their name and basic info they are released. The longer you are untreated the harder it is to stabilize. My daughter, 28 has the mentality of a teenager. Once the real mental illness kicks in, that's it.
