The Brewers decided to have a bullpen day in game 1, while the Rockies sent Antonio Senzatela to the hill. After a strong first few innings for the starters, the Brewers drew first blood on a 2-run homerun by Christian Yelich in the 3rd. Other than the homerun, Senzatela was quite good in this one, going 5 inning and giving up just 3 hits. The Brewers bullpen completely shut down the Rockies offense through 8 innings, only allowing 1 hit, but that changed in the 9th. The Rockies were able to tie the game in the 9th off of Brewers' closer Jeremy Jeffress. Charlie Blackmon drove in a run on a single to right, and Nolan Arenado hit a sac-fly to send the game to extras. After a 1-2-3 top of the 10th, Adam Ottavino got in trouble and eventually gave up a walk-off single to Mike Moustakas that scored Christian Yelich. The Brewers have taken a 1-0 lead in the NLDS.

Counsell lucky again... I wouldve let Hader pitch the 9th! 20 pitches, he is a foolish bastard, never mess with something that is working!!!

I said the same exact thing. You have Hader mowing guys down like crazy, and you pull him out?? Only to bring in Jeffress and darn near throw the game away. Hader easily had another inning in him and you could have saved Jeffress for tomorrow's game

Hader was due to bat during the top half of the ninth thanks to the double switch. It makes sense to leverage a pinch hitter for a chance to pad the lead - followed by putting in your second best reliever in Jefress for the save - rather than risk literally anything BAD to happen to Hader if you have him step into the box. It was a calculated risk which didn't pay off, but it was the right call by Counsell. I'd rather be one game ahead out of five than risk tiring out one or two more bullpen arms. Also, having a relief pitcher like Hader throwing 98+mph gas to go pitch a full inning with 20 pitches already thrown is asking for trouble.

So what that he was due up, they were up 2 -0. That is exactly why you dont pull pitchers until they are done or they get in trouble. He has a habit of pulling pitchers(Chacin) too early all year long! Counsell is a shitty manager!!! Also risk anything bad happening to Hader? That is an assanine statement. If that is the case, why bring him in period? You do not play to lose, you play to win the game!

Looking at the box score, did you notice the Brewers won this game on a "bullpen" day? None of the pitchers due up came to bat, and I imagine Counsell wasn't going to deviate from that plan. By simply having a league-average hitter hit for the pitcher at all times, you essentially gain .42 runs per game, or ~68 runs per 162-game season (Tango et alia, "The Book", p.149-150). Now I understand that the postseason is a whole different can of worms compared to the regular season, but leveraging any sort of advantage at any moment, regardless of the outcome, is worth doing.

And where did that get them? They were up 2 to 0 when Hader was pinch hit for and what was the score when Broxton struck out? Still 2 to 0 genius! You can play all the numbers you want but when it is all said and done Hader is your best option. The sad point is Counsell can do no wrong with you Brewer homers!! Also do not forget you are UP 2 to 0, not DOWN! When you have the lead the opponent has to score! That is called baseball 101 A!

better than mlb highlights. they didn't even show the overturned ground rule double by blackmon, pivotal moment in the game. i thought milwaukee brew it.

Man the audio in this game is awful. Ball hitting the glove sounds the same as hitting the batt. Sad when organizations feel it is necessary to enhance the in game audio like this. Must not be a very loud fan base in Milwaukie. Love the highlight keep up the good work!
