I am proud of being a parishioner of Santa Cruz de la Caniada where I came to get married to a Santa Cruz man. Before this I attended LA Iglesia de San Antonio in Medanales where I was born. And we celebrated every year San Antonio Day with Don Tevano singing the misterios de San Antonio and a big feast. Those days were beautiful and we had penitentes too. Now all the old people have died so gone are those beautiful days. I think the only thing they have now is when the priest comes to say mass from Abiqui, New Mexico.
Proud of my Native and Spanish blood ..SONE INDIVIDUALS WILL ALWAYS HOLD HATE..I LIVE MY CULTURE AND ROOTS AND CONN CT TO ALL OF THEM .I WAS NOT THERE WHEN CONQUISTADOR S ARRIVED I CANT CHANGE THAT BUT WITHOUT THE SPANISH BLOOD AND NATIVE I WOULDNT EXIST. NO TIME FOR HATE
Fun fact, during the Mexican American war, ancient Mexican churches like this one became prey to plunder and destruction by invading troops and insubordinate officers, a quote regarding this period goes : “Nothing would stop these booted loafers (American volunteers) from rushing onward until they kicked the Spanish priest out of the church they professed! A luxurious and over greedy priesthood in Mexico would allow for our officers to pay their troops” On many accounts during and after the war, churches became teachers of war violence and revenge attacks, also many churches would be plundered during their abandonment during the sieges, one account recalls a large solid gold statue of a saint being looted from the church. One actual battle of the Mexican American war happened in a church in Mexico, though I cannot recall which one.
