FILM DESCRIPTION:
In this gritty police drama from director Dennis Hopper, street-wise cop Bob Hodges (Robert Duvall) and hotheaded rookie Danny McGavin (Sean Penn) grapple with their new partnership on the gang-ridden streets of Los Angeles. Although Danny finally lets Hodges show him the ropes, his adrenaline-fed brutality earns him a reputation with the very gangs they want to help. My father joined the LAPD in 1990 and retired in 2019 as a lieutenant. One of my favorite photos is one of him in front of ruined building during the Rodney King riots. I cherish the stories he's told me, especially when i man up and ask him about past experiences. My father has told me countless times of instances like the one depicted in the scene, at times it just wasn't worth it not mention doing what hodges did obviously benefits you in the long run. My father means the world to me and i hope to one day be half the man he is. By the way my father never fired his weapon in the line of duty. Respect to all those who walk the thin blue line.

This scene is very powerful, as it demonstrates how different cops are at different points in their career. On the one hand, you have the righteous rookie, who wants to catch all of the bad guys and not cut anyone a break. On the other hand, you have the seasoned veteran, who is near retirement. His experience and wisdom tells him to cut the perp a break on something relatively minor, so that he may get info on something more important later on. He also sees the value in upping his street cred with the gangbangers. The poor rookie will eventually figure it out, but right now he just thinks that his partner is lazy. Btw, the cops that never figure this out usually either quit or take the Sergeant's exam..

I grew up in Lynwood, between Inglewood and Compton around 87-89. Seeing this scene really made me realize how Gangbangers and La criminals use to dress. Crips/bloods had Jheri curls, shade locs, hats with bandana wrapped around them. And cholos actually had hair, before they were bald. No wonder a lot of Hispanics boys were dating white girls, Asian girls even some black girls. They had amazing hair styles back then.

The evolution in the "cool" "gangster" "hip" era has been changing every 10-15 years since the early 1900s. Just remember that the old heads from the 80s/90s were talking about dressing different along with morals and street codes from the 60s/70s. Those OG's of that era than were talking about how proper men us to dress from the 40s-50s. Men went from dressing in suites, fancy shoes and pants to women bell bottoms, long hair/afros, silk women shirts, high heel looking shoes etc, by the 80s, top male artist from bands were advertising to wear makeup like mascara and have perms in their hair with black lever type of outfits. When will the sheeps learn that this is more of a continuing agenda on the basic public vs average Joe who decided he wants to look like one of his idols in the music/Hollywood scene?

This is a very good film. You should watch the full film. I do value the approach Hodges has but it is a very dangerous game. SEVEN is another good old cop young cop film.
