5 years after this video was released!! Doing double knitting, not stranded work, and having a heck of a time managing the yarns back and forth between knitting and purling. Your instructions for loading the thimble really helped. That was the biggest challenge!!
I’m starting my first color work sweater. I bought a thimble some time ago and now I’m trying to decide if I will carry yarn in each hand or use the thimble. Based on these videos I’m leaning towards using the thimble. This was very helpful. Thank you.
Every time I start a colorwork project, I come here to review how to trap the left strand and how to trap the right strand. If one can't find a wire thimble like the one in the video, there are some plastic thimbles that go on the index finger. They have a sort of comb with a lid that fits over and keeps the yarn separate. I have the wire thimble, but I couldn't find it and the store only had the plastic thimble so now i have both. (Of course I found the wire thimble a day later). The plastic thimble won't work with really heavy yarns
Wow, thanks so much! I am trying out my Norwegian Knitting Thimble ( first time user) on a sock pattern on Ravelry called Mainstream by Oekotante that has fish swimming and I think your techniques here are going to help a lot!
I am having an issue with the non dominant color showing through the dominant color where it is being carried, despite pulling it up. Do you have any suggestions?
I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but when I catch the yarn in the back (your white color) it twists my knit stitch and when I come back to it on the next round, I have to knit through the back loop to fix it. But I swear I'm doing exactly what you are 🤔
That’s right! I mention in the video that this is the case and you, all you have to do it knit through the back loop as you are already doing. This has the added bonus of letting you know where you caught the float in the previous round so you have the ability to space your catches out through subsequent rows.
Thank you for this helpful video. I have had one of these Thimbles for about six months and didn't know how to use it. I have just about learned how to knit Continental knit stitches, but struggled with the Purl stitch. I can now try knitting with 2 colours in Left hand. Is this classed as Twined knitting ? I will have a go with my Thimble tomorrow. I will place another comment when I can get it right.Thank you.
Mary Wilson Thank you! I’m so glad you found my videos helpful, you might want to check out my tutorial on Continental knitting for additional help on purling, it does take a bit of practice. This is classified as “stranded knitting” aka fair isle or colorwork.
you didn't mention that when you catch the background floats with this method the resulting stitch is TWISTED, so you should untwist it either right away or in the next round in order to have a good looking result.
Elena Callegari Yes only when catching the left strand. I do believe I mention that in the last video of the series but you’re right, I assumed that it was self explanatory to knit it tbl to correct it in the following round.
I also found this out after missing it at first! I’m doing a stranded color work scarf in the round and I’m hoping the last part will look better than the first part. I found (this is my first stranded color work) that catching the floats even more often than is depicted here helps me keep it flatter. Notice I said flatter, not completely flat! Ha!
That would be cool but I’m terrible at throwing so I don’t teach English style (throwing) so I can’t be of much help. Tbh I’m not sure the thimble would be as useful when throwing.
naomi stamper Thank you for watching! I go on in the video to explain that while it twists the stitch on the catch, simply knitting through the back loop of the twisted stitch on the following round will resolve the twist. The temporary twist also serves as a reminder to not catch the yarn in that same spot on the following round.
