The Colosseum is an elliptical amphitheatre in the centre of the city of Rome, Italy, just east of the Roman Forum. Despite its age, it is the world's largest standing amphitheatre and the largest ancient amphitheatre ever constructed. Vespasian, the emperor at the time, ordered construction to begin, and Titus, his successor and heir, oversaw its completion in 80 AD. During Domitian's rule, additional adjustments were made. The amphitheatre was given the name Flavian Amphitheatre by subsequent classicists and archaeologists because it is associated with the family name of the three emperors who sponsored the work.
