There is a tendency, I think, to romanticize the Coloseum. I'm half-Italian and I have visited Rome. Of course, all of it is amazing. But, when I consider that the Colosseum actually is a symbol of the very worst and most depraved aspects of human nature I can only look away in shame. Nonetheless, our history is what it is. Thanks for an interesting look at one of the most evil places on Earth.

You have a point, but every civilization used to be like that, The Aztecs and the Egyptian had slavery human sacrifice rituals and all types of Violence.. But Rome has left the most beautiful monuments in world that are still standing, and our job is to preserve them, and share the historical facts about the ancient Roman civilization. Is not that in our modern days we are doing much better we have currently 30 countries in wore, we have Spanish-style bullfighting Or videos from ISIS that shows the terrorists beheading innocent people on live streaming Or threats of nuclear wore from Russia. That’s the modern times .. To be honest I would prefer to live in the Ancient Rome, during the Trajan or Hadrian period, with gladiators fights and amazing buildings and baths and theater shows and great sculptures of bronze statue and fresco paintings all over pompei and aqueducts, and 100 thousands km of streets surrounding the empire from England to Sahara from Germany to Scotland from Iran to India and from Croatia to Greece all over Spain.

Don't worry my friend, ALL ancient civilizations where cruel and "evil". Im mexican and one of our symbols are the aztec and mayan pyramids and they used to well.... sacrifice humans there so don't worry about it all civilizations were fucked up.

The very worst and most depraved aspects of human nature? Not hardly. The Colosseum was in use for 400 years (most people have no idea it was in use for centuries). It's estimated that 400,000 people were killed during that time. That is 1000 people per year. More people are murdered every year in just two American cities...NY and Chicago. But really, plop a Roman into our modern times and they would be truly aghast, reading some of our "worst of" stats. 60 million people murdered by Chairman Mao. 30 million people murdered by Stalin. 6 million people murdered in by Hitler (not to mention the 55 million that died during the war he started). 3 million Vietnamese civilians killed during the Vietnam war (not including the 1.25 million soldiers that died). Then there was the centuries long sad episode of slavery in the US and Latin America...an estimated 2 million people died during the middle passage. It is a myth to think that the violence in ancient Rome was any more shocking and terrible than in the centuries that followed it. Sure, there is the entertainment aspect to it, but, life was cheap back then. But, it is cheap to a very large amount of people alive today, as well.

I have been to the colosseum but not to the underground portion. It was amazing but also sad to know the inhuman suffering that took place there under the romans. RIP to those that died.

Si potrebbe, con qualche lavoro ( acqua, elettricità...) allogiarvi un migliaio o più di immigrati. I quali in cambio, potranno esibirsi in nuovi giochi circensi ( non cruenti), per i turisti spettatori.
