If you are considering having a Total Knee Replacement then this video may help put your mind at ease. Your own experience and body may certainly be different to mine and you may have quite different issues and or results, so talk to your medical professionals before you undertake something like this.
In part 3 of this series on my Total Knee Replacement journey, I show you how far I have progressed with the help of some great physiotherapy and a lot of hard work. In this episode I am at the 10 week Post Op mark and am working to get back out doing what we love to do. I might add that I had private health insurance and that has really helped as it can be quite an extensive and expensive ordeal if you had to pay for it without the insurance and the public system may not cover the costs of the follow up physio that I was fortunate to be able to have. .
A total knee replacement is serious surgery and is done when you are no longer able to do what you want to do because you are limited by damaged or arthritic joints. Although my right knee is not perfect it doesn't stop me, but my left knee was down to bone on bone and I struggled to walk even a few hundred metres and would find steps a challenge. I struggled to sleep at night after any extended walking distances.
Okay, I may not be able to leap tall buildings in a single bound, but I can now tackle stairs without wondering if I need to stop half way for a rest, and I can nearly keep up with Rose as she loves to take long walks in the forest trails to see the amazing scenery that Australia has to offer. We love to put together our travel vlogs that are hopefully entertaining and informative and I needed to do the knee replacement so we could continue our travels and bring you new content.
So join us in this episode as we complete this 3 part series on my Total Knee
Replacement journey and we hope it gives you at least a little bit of an idea of what I went through as a reasonably fit and healthy seventy year old male.

Thanks for the videos. My wife got her knee replacement yesterday and it was great to see your progress.

Wish her luck for me. It does take a while but it does get better with time. Get her to set some small but achievable goals and bit by bit it will improve.

I had my TKR 8 days ago…still chipping away…trying to remind myself that it will get better and I am progressing. Slow going but I’m in it to win it!

As they say, it’s a marathon not a sprint. Set realistic goals and work towards them. At 8 days I was still working towards a Rom of 90 but 8 weeks I was at full range 140 and we were concentrating on building confidence on stairs and hill climbs. Stairs are no longer scary and am getting back to normal life. Today is week 11 for me and getting more and more friendly with my new knee. Keep up the positivity and you will get through with flying colours.

Gosh, rapid progress. Not everyone is the same, by any means. It is definitely a painful process and can take many months.

Yes I’ve found so many people have different starting and ending points and reasons for having to go through it. Mine was worn out from years of hard work, while others are sport related and others are accident related. Some are just unlucky in the general pool lottery. At three months now I still have bad days where I just have to take it easy and ice up for a while.

Thanks for your 3 episodes, quite informative. Are you able to kneel on your knee?

No my surgeon says not to. He doesn’t want me doing lunges or using a leg press either. There are a few things I’ll have to adapt to. I am going to a gym now after the rehab centre and under the guidance of an exercise physiologist to try to get back surfing somehow.

@@Explornations I was just thinking because of work. I have a pretty hands and knees job a fair amount of the time

As my surgeon reminds me, you are not getting a 20 year olds knee. You are getting two chunks o metal separated by a piece of plastic. The operation to install these pieces is quite brutal and it can take many months for the swelling to go. You will get numbness around the knee as there are nerves that are cut and muscles split. Apart from the bones being sawn through. Sounds a bit frightening but it is well worth it for the end result.

I’m glad I went through it. 5 months Post Op and I can now do way more than before the op. We are off to Kgari (Fraser Island) again this next week and looking forward to it. 😁

It will get better. Hang in there. I’m two weeks postop and walking a mile a day. Still have a lot of nerve pain but each day it gets a little bit better.
