Thanks. I definitely appreciate Matt letting me work with him on his animation because it really made me study the more intricate details of how this cool piece of firearms design works. Very unique and definitely a clever design. The fact they can mass produce these and have the price where it is at is incredible.

@@ColterBrog I agree I hear a lot of people talking down on the new python but I think its a great revolver and colt did way better than s&w at reintroducing a classic I honestly think colt did pretty damn good.

I’m blown away by how smoothly machined the inside of that is after looking at my 686. I bet that accounts for a lot of how much better the DA pull is alone.

I think part of it is machining, part of it is intelligent use of MIM parts which have smooth surfaces and prevent the need of machining, and the way the V-spring smoothly adds tension.

I think it is one of the best options on the market right now that’s widely available. Korth and Manurhin have some nice revolvers, but the Korth options are kind of ugly in my opinion and the Manurhin is just not easy to find… and that’s without talking about the price.

Why did they make the firing-pin a press fit...big dumb mistake by Colt that makes it farrrr harder to replace...🤔

Thanks man! This was the best video I’ve seen so far explaining what’s going on in the python. Also, thanks for keeping all the parts in that didn’t go so smooth! It’s always more informative when people gotta work through problems and explain them rather than perform a practiced difficult maneuver for a video. I’ll be checking out your other videos!

It's interesting how complicated revolver actions are nowadays compared to a lot of the European 19th century revolver actions

It is quite intricate, but the technology exists now that a revolver like this can be made with mass market access. To me that’s the really amazing part. Certainly revolvers this nice could be manufactured in the past, but it was a very labor intensive process- and it had to be highly skilled labor. The fact a revolver this silky smooth and aesthetically pleasing can be offered for the price it is… yeah, it’s not cheap, but I think it represents a good value.

I think the new Pythons have a very elegant design. I’ve sold all of my S&W revolvers, and have gone with Pythons and King Cobras. 👍👍👍👍

They definitely aren’t cheap, but when you look at the level of precision necessary to get a design like this to work it makes sense. It’s a lot of parts working in unison with a perfect fit. The fact it works is pretty amazing technology, but what’s really impressive is how smooth and consistent everything is. This was a big project for Colt to preserve their reputation and the reputation of the Python name, and the new Python displays an excellent mastery of modern manufacturing processes and precision. I think they did a good job.

@@anthonyvillanueva2410 You’ll love it. They have an intricate mechanism, but in my opinion it is a very efficient way of achieving the goal. It’s a very consistent and precise revolver, designed in an intelligent way. They’re accurate and enjoyable.

Hopefully you enjoy it as much as I have. I still love my old S&W revolvers, but the Python is so smooth it has definitely made my old favorites seem a bit… clunky. Colt really did a great job with the new Python.

I just purchased a new Colt Python Combat Elite. The first time I shot it, it experienced a failure in single action mode. The revolver is locking up in single action mode. When you cock the hammer back, it intermittently locks up and you are unable to pull the trigger or manipulate the hammer. Both the hammer and the trigger are locked up, continued manipulation of both the hammer and trigger doesn’t help unlock it sometimes you can get it to unlock and sometimes the trigger will function firing a live round. It will be on the way back to Colt this week. Very disappointed in Colt’s quality control. Do you have any idea what could be causing the lock up? I couldn’t seem to duplicate the problem when the gun is unloaded. But it occurred several times while I was shooting it both with 38 special and 357 factory new ammunition. I did take a video of the lock-up failure.

Hard to say without looking at it. Something definitely sounds like it’s out of spec or there is some foreign item inside the lockwork. I’m sure Colt can figure it out.

It’s a good question, but unfortunately I cannot answer it with confidence. Based on conversations I’ve had with other owners who have disassembled their pistols, Colt has not been consistent throughout the production as far as which parts are or aren’t MIM. It does use MIM for various components, particularly small parts. The cylinder stop/bolt, cylinder latch, transfer bar, etc. are MIM on mine. In my opinion Colt has made intelligent use of MIM by using it on parts well-suited to that manufacturing technique, and the process itself is done well. They show no signs of shrinkage and excellent dimensional stability. It’s MIM done right, and in the right applications.

Would you say, that the action design of the new Python is a more efficiently engineered one, than the old Python design? Smoother, better lockup, durability etc??

I don’t have a ton of experience with the older Pythons, but in my opinion based on what I know the new Python is more efficient, more robust, and definitely easier to work on. It’s really a necessary change from the aspect of actually being able to bring the revolver to market. The old design was much more dependent on skilled fitters. The new design is based around proven concepts that lend themselves well to modern manufacturing. The precision of the manufacturing available now, combined with the design choices, results in a very smooth revolver that is accessible to more people.

Excellent explanation of the Colt action but I can't really explain to myself why the s&w is different, it has the same parts. Why wouldn't it be the same way?

S&W is actually quite different. You’re of course correct that the two different brands have the same general parts, but the way those parts actually interact shows distinct differences in design. S&W uses a leaf mainspring to drive the hammer, while Colt uses a V-spring that acts as both the mainspring and the trigger spring. S&W’s rebound slide for trigger reset and a hammer rebounding safety is totally unlike the Colt design. Their safety mechanisms are designed with what are essentially opposite concepts. The video linked below might explain this better as it compares the two designs side-by-side. I think I figured out that like you say the parts interact differently, the rebound system of s&w doesn't put as much tension on the hand or pawl keeping the cylinder tight!

S&W’s rebound slide ultimately stops rearward movement of the trigger, which causes the hand to basically just stop wherever it stops in that movement and the cylinder stop sits in the recess without tension. Colt’s design stops the trigger through a linkage of trigger>pawl>ratchet>cylinder recess>bolt>frame to where everything is tensioned by the trigger pull occurring and is braced in place at the moment of firing. It actually took me quite a bit of studying the mechanism (during the course of trying to assist Matt with the mechanical details of his animation) to fully understand exactly what is happening. I kept thinking I was missing something, that surely the design isn’t *that* ingenious, complex, and precise… but it definitely seems so as I can find no other explanation.

*I have already sent my python back to colt for repairs.* I have a python that when using double action is failing to rotate the cylinder completely and it will also fail to lock-up the cylinder. When it fails to rotate the cylinder to the next cartridge it will fail to lock-up. After this has occurred the cylinder will rotate to the next cartridge, sometimes it will free spin. If I release the trigger it will fire in single action semi-reliably. If I fire it in double action again it is unreliable if the gun will fire or not. What are your thoughts on to what this could be causing this?

Could be the side plate being loose. Colt had some issues with that early in production. It causes the pawl to walk and not properly engage the ratchet. I’d really have to see it to make a better guess beyond that known issue.
