That is an awesome story! I have some guns from WW1 and to think of the men who used those guns post war being able to target shoot with them is fascinating. Adds a lot of emotional weight to those 1890s-1918 guns

Thank you for your encouragement, Wade. I continually find it rather bizarre that people hug the nonsense that is written on blog sites and spewed on this medium, without assessing the origin or questioning the source. Colt and all firearms makers have Research and Development (R&D) teams that continuously seek to improve their product. Are we so foolish and arrogant that we cannot conceive that a simple magazine spring can be improved after 100 years?

@@tommymorgan9926 NO, it is a scam! Don't respond and do not give them any information. Nearly every gun channel has warned of this scam. Report it to RU-vid.

This is not a nested spring. Nested coils are progressive in diameter and fit within larger coils. They have a reputation for snagging. This spring uses less wire and fewer coils.

@@GunBlue490 Thanks for the reply, I guess my comment gave the impression that these colt mags were a nested spring which they clearly are not. 😁😁 Just wanted to expand on the theme of the video ie clever engineering allowing more rounds in the same space.

MecGar magazines are amongst the very best made. Many high end pistol makers use MecGar supplied magazines because of their quality. My 1984 vintage Sig-Sauer P226 9mm has both Sig and MecGar mags and I haven't had a mag related stoppage in tens of thousands of rounds, that I can remember at least ha ha ha. I've been using that pistol since around 1990 and it's still a gem.

I love my 10 rounders. Feed great and when fully loaded make the first few shots more accurate because the gun feels better balanced

No, I don't speculate. I have absolutely no reason to believe that the same modern metallurgy that allowed for a stronger, thinner spring will be in the least less durable. Advances in metallurgy would prefer the durability of the modern wire over the older.

@@Paladin1873 thanks for responding. I thought so. The more I interacted with them about this supposed gun that I had won, all the misspellings, poor grammar, the more I started to get suspicious. Then I started to look around at other supporters of the channel and noticed that they had also won. To good to be true…

@@tommymorgan9926 It's a very common scam found on many RU-vid pages. Their goal is to either steal your personal information or get you to pay some handling charges with a credit card, then boom, before you can say Bob's your uncle, they've piled up a bunch of charges on your card or swindled your bank account.

You mentioned reliability. That's the heart of this entire topic. "Can we make our 7 round flush fitting magazines hold an extra round WITHOUT sacrificing reliability in a maximium stresss situation?" Asked a Colt employee. And here we are.

@@14goldmedals I'm sure that the engineers put these through tens of thousands of rounds of testing and prototypes with their competitive shooters I think if there was a problem they would have canned it but it made it to market so I'm thinking the reliability should be there. So far I'm not hearing any talk of the eight round mags being unreliable. Thank you

@@14goldmedals Reliability is definitely their first priority but cost believe it or not is a huge issue for companies. They've tested stuff that's even better than this but it probably cost more so it never makes it to market. In the end a business has to make money and if they're not making money they go out of business and we get nothing. So cost is a huge part of an engineer's job not just the engineer the absolute best part cuz that absolute best part will be too expensive. Thank you 👍

@@brianlee6849 great point on cost. Depending on the product, saving let’s say $0.02 per screw could mean huge profits like in the auto industry.

Yeah? My Dan Wesson A2 came with a pair of those. The magazine itself fits 8, but it won't actually load into the gun when the slide is forward.

Those issues are more likely a weak recoil spring for the first round and over oiling, which causes spontaneous misfeeds/stovepipe jams on the last round. If a magazine feeds most rounds, it's generally not a magazine issue. Keep feed ramps free of oil and never oil any magazine, ever.

What is your internal official Colt source for that? I never knew of any company that published confidential outsource contractors. Only the Colt name appears on the base plate of the magazine.

@@GunBlue490 It's pretty easy to tell. The pat number on the 8 round magazine leads to CM, and CM is the only company that makes a flat backed dimpled follower. Colt is also known for using Metalform magazines, but neither of those two are MF. Those were usually marked on the bottom with a simple M.

It's probably a 35 year old housewife who never shot a gun.

Your hunch is not founded in the way springs work, and I always advise folks to seek fundamentals of mechanical design, not hunches. Colt knows a bit about springs, ya think? Guns and machines of the world employ thousands of springs of various dimensions and infinite combinations of wire diameters, coil designs, and coil counts. A great many of those springs are under constant load and last for generations. You say long term loaded magazines? That's no feat at all for a spring maker! Consider that a car engine valve spring must exert constant force upon a valve that cycles at over 100 times per second! Consider that the firing pin spring in a bolt action rifle is always under almost 100% compression. It is compressed over 1,5 inches all the time, and in cocked mode is less than .060". Tension, compression, and resistance are the only factors involved. Properly tempered of high quality metal, which you may rest assured are properties of any modern gun spring, each would be equal in durability and elasticity.
