It’s crazy how the 1911 that is still in use today was invented only 40 odd years after the colt single action army.

Both guns are. Colt makes memorable firearms.
@The_Conspiracy_Analyst
@The_Conspiracy_Analyst Год назад
The 1911 was designed with the popularity of the SAA in mind, so it took some design cues. .45ACP and the barrel length were designed to give similar ballistics to .44-40 or .45LC. It was single action with the hammer exposed and had a half cock. Also like the SAA, the 1911 was initially offered in both .38 and .45 variants.

Westerns were big in the old days of Hollywood. So much so that studios used to pool their Western props together and share the wagons and horses and guns. Hollywood had a veritable stockpile of Colt Peacemakers and Winchester 92s. Which explains why in all those films and serials everyone seemed to be shooting Colts.

Well, those settlers and farmers couldn't have tamed the Wild West without one gun in particular; the double barrel shotgun. A large family of settlers likely didn't have a Colt Single Action Army revolver. Nor a Winchester repeater. But practically all of them had a double barrel shotgun. I really feel like this video needed to come with a disclaimer that no Colt revolvers were harmed in the making of this video. I always find amusing the difference between Hollywood and reality when it comes to operation of guns in the old west. Fanning would be bad because it seems to me that someone wouldn't want to abuse something that cost them more than a half a month's salary.

Fanning was mostly something the trick shooters and exhibitionists did. Not only was it harmful to the weapon but it was also a great way to miss a lot and waste ammo that should've gone into the other man instead. I doubt many cowboys actually did it except for fun.

My ex has a 1st Gen SSA .45 Colt Revolver that his grandfather won in a poker game. It was in France during WWI, and he won it as an IOU from a Texas Ranger. His grandfather and the Ranger exchanged addresses, but the Ranger never resurfaced, although his grandfather tried to find him. But this was the 1920s after a war and it wasn't easy to find someone. The gun got passed down in the family until my husband got it. The Ranger's address was lost sometime in the 50s. I was able to get a Certificate of Authenticity from Colt on the gun and gave it to my husband for Christmas one year. We never could find the Ranger. The gun was part of a shipment from Colt that shipped to St. Louis bound for Texas. The paperwork in St Louis that would have had the buyers name on it was lost in a fire. Oh well, it was a beautiful gun and still was in great shape and was very accurate.

On the topic of better engineered guns, it's a shame that S&W didn't offer the Schofield in .45 Colt. It was the better handgun, especially for cavalry, with it's top break action. It allowed for faster reloads and, with practice, one handed reloads on horseback. The Colt required two hands for reloading and couldn't eject the spent casings at once, like the Schofield could.

Wasn't there a problem with the Scofield's top break malfunctioning? Any idea how prevalent that was if it did? Also, was there a specific reason why they didn't make a .45 version? @RichWhiteUM
@RichWhiteUM 5 лет назад
@@eldorados_lost_searcher They made the Schofield to use a proprietary cartridge, the .45 Schofield. It was shorter than the .45 Colt. From what I've heard, it was for patent reasons, even though Remington made the 1875 in .45 Colt.

Although there are diehards that won’t admit it, there were double action cowboy guns in the old west. They first started coming out in the 1870s with Smith & Wesson starting in 1880. Many famous and infamous people carried them has a backup gun.

Actually, the Starr Double Action Revolver came out in the 1850-60 period. So those diehards can't fight history!

Santee, I was wondering if the weight of the revolver helps to stabilize it when shooting, or does it kick like the proverbial mule? Also, great payoff joke at the end.
@ArizonaGhostriders
@ArizonaGhostriders 5 лет назад
The weight helps with the recoil. It also depends on how hot your loads are. The longer barrel helps, too.

Ya!! IMO, the best designed pistol in it's time. Did I mention that my gr-grpa won an 1873 Colt Peace-Maker (along with a horse/saddle) in a poker game in 1912? He was so proud of that! He brought them home, showed them to family. Threw the pistol into a closet( it was often taken out to show-and-tell) then went and traded horse/saddle for two really good draft-team horses.( He was a very practical man) He only carried two other guns in his life. A single-shot 12ga. and an IJ .32 s&w revolver. He didn't have need for anything else, being as he was a true 6'7", and had a verifiable court record of him, along w/3 other men, slashing 19 men in a bar-fight. The 1873 Colt was stolen by neighbor in 1983. Never recovered.😒

I might get a Colt one day, but until then I'll have to stick with the Taylor's & Co./Uberti SAA in 5 1/2" barrel. For some reason I like that barrel length, not to long or short, just the right balance I reckon. Of course, that's just my personal opinion.

While it's true the US Calvary did use the colt in 45 they first used, and preferred, the scofield revolver in 45 scofield. A break top is much easier to reload on horse back. But the Colt could fire the 45 Scofield round AND the 45 LC round and the Scofield couldn't . So Colt won just on logistics .
@ArizonaGhostriders
@ArizonaGhostriders 5 лет назад
Well, the longer .45 was a more powerful round. I think that was the crux of why it was adopted. Later on the Army realized the .45 Schofield round, with less recoil, was a better round for staying on target and it was adopted.

I own a Pietta replica in .45 Colt. Many of the modern replicas, incorporate a transfer bar system, which unlike the originals, can the safely carried when all six chambers in the cylinder are unloaded. Not recommended to carry all six loaded in the original models, as a blow to the hammer, or dropping the revolver. may result in an accidental discharge.
@ArizonaGhostriders
@ArizonaGhostriders 4 года назад
Yes, but if you are headed for trouble, you wouldn't want to be left one bullet short, so you loaded 6.

Those that carried them then and those of us that carry them now do NOT load six cartridges in the SAA or any of its clones! Accidental discharges are common if carried with a live round under the hammer. Load one, skip one chamber, load 4 more, cock the hammer all the way back and ease it back down! There will be an empty chamber under the hammer/firing pin!
